In a letter dated 1879, the writer relates the news concerning a mutual acquaintance: "Er ist mit seiner Familie recht gesund, u. es hätte sich in seiner nächsten Umgebung weiter Nichts geändert, als daß wir seit Weihnachten abermals um ein Mädchen reicher geworden sind. (And now comes the difficult sentence!) Unwillkürlich hat sich uns dabei die Ueberzeugung und Bitte aufgedrängt, daß es nunmehr bei dem erreichten Bestande sein Bewunden/Bewonden [=Befinden, etc?] haben könne. Wenn's doch wahr wäre! Nun hat er 1 Sohn u. 2 Töchter."
