English term

Shaft Trailing, trailing mode

English to German Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime Schiff, Antrieb, Welle, Propeller

Shaft Trailing

In trailing mode one propeller shaft is not activated and the propeller shall be driven by the water.
The operator shall have the possibility to select the shaft trailing mode when the ship is sailing at sufficient speed.
In trailing mode, the optimum pitch of the trailing propeller can be adjusted by the operator via the PCS and locally.
Before engagement of shaft trailing, the AKS shall check the following conditions:

Meine Frage nun:
z. B.
trailing mode = Schleppmodus ?
Shaft = Welle Trailing = Schleppen ?

Sascha

Trail shaft or Trail shaft mode.A engine operation mode in which a DDG(destroyer),based on GTM engines, can voyage on a high efficiency of burning fuel.In trail shaft mode the ship(DDG,destroyer) operates one main engine and associated shaft, while allowing the other shaft to spin free(one engine online and one shaft windmilling). In split plant mode, redundancy of the propulsion plant is increased with two GTMs online, one for each shaft. Finally, full power mode is the operational state when all four GTMs are online, with two powering each shaft.

When a ship is being towed, the propellers should be locked, unless it is permissible and advantageous to allow the shafts to trail with the movement of the ship......

Maybe these will help:

Marine drive shafts. On a power-driven ship, the drive shaft, or propeller shaft, usually connects the transmission inside the vessel directly to the propeller, passing through a stuffing box or other seal at the point it exits the hull.

Term: shaft log (n)
Definition: 1) A counter attached to the propeller shaft of large vessels, used to approximate the speed of the ship. 2) A reinforcing heavy timber or metal fitting drilled to accommodate the propeller shaft.
