As can be seen from the reference below, there are two categories of masters degree, with a decreasing amount of difference between them. One is more research oriented and the other more work/vocationally oriented. However, either of these can lead on to either pursuing PhD research or to being recruited by industry.

In European LMD system (Licence, Master, Doctorat) M1 is equivalent. to BSc hons, M2 to MSc (or MA etc depending on subject)
