Parliament, Congress, etc.

To hold political office means to have a seat in your country's parliament, e.g. Congress/Senate (USA), House of Representatives/Lords (UK) and so on.

Here, a "candidate for political office" is someone who is running for his or her country's political institution. Although, it may also be someone running for local body government (e.g. mayor, council) that sort of thing).

\"Office\" basically has the sense here of: \"A position of authority, duty, or trust given to a person, as in a government or corporation: the office of vice president.\" (American Heritage Dictionary)
