French term

panneau 4/3

French to English Marketing Advertising / Public Relations
Asking a secret shopper if he or she was able to find a machinery hire branch without difficulty:

"Ya t’il un fléchage ou signalétique dans la zone d’approche autre que le panneau 4/3"

Is there a specific term for this type of sign in English? I imagine the 4/3 refers to its dimensions in metres??

Many TIA

Discussion

Vicky James (asker) Jun 23, 2008:
Thanks Emma, it does seem like splitting hairs to start differentiating types of advertising!
Emma Paulay Jun 23, 2008:
Hi Vicky, a panneau 4/3 (in metres, as you say) is definitely about advertising. This is probably a "permanent" one that says "Kiloutou left at next roundabout"...It's still an ad though.
Vicky James (asker) Jun 23, 2008:
Thanks, Kimberly. I'm just not sure that those signs you see (bearing the name of the shop and maybe a simplified map / turn right / 500m etc just before you get to a big shopping centre park) would be called billboards, which seem to me to be more about pure advertising. But what do I know!
Tony M Jun 23, 2008:
I like 'secret shopper' — makes it sound as if they're 'in the closet' :-))

I don't have any websites to support this, but the 4/3 makes me think of the proportions of wider tv screens and billboards have the same proportions...
What do you think?
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : I'm not really qualified to 'agree', but I was certainly thinking along these lines myself; just one thing, though: 4:3 is actually the format of the older, squarer TV screens; the new, wider ones are 16:9

oops, you're right about the TV dimensions. I guess I'm stuck in the past!

agree Dave 72 : Yeah, "billboard"

agree maisy : I agree with billboard. Not only are they advertising but often also give information about their location e.g. 100m after the next roundabout.
