English to Chinese Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy
As in "graduate programs", "undergraduate programs", "MBA program"...

I understand it well, but have trouble in finding a good translation. 课程？项目？课程项目？or even 专业？none of them is accurate. Please give me your thoughts, thanks!

Thanks, you are right. It is virtually impossible to use one Chinese term to cover all the meaning of "program".

Futhermore, Major as in Major/minor should not be translated into 專業. It shopuld be 主修 instead.

afternoon program, Saterday program, after-school programs, Art program, XXX-funded programs, etc. There will never be one Chinese term to cover all the meanings of " program". The same is true to the "programs" in college.

I think you are asking about the translation of "program" in its different sense. As in my answer, the term itself has different meanings in different contexts. If you go to any website of an elementary school in the USA, you will see "mroning program",

Thank you for the notes, jyuan. The problem is, in many cases, program is not 专业 in the sense of "major/minor". For example, a "short-term program", "ESL program". Maybe I could adopt 课程 for "program" and translate "course" as 科目/课目 for differentiation purpose? Thanks for your patience, folks!

Thanks all! This also appears in many other instances where 课程 will actually be problematic. For example, in a table where "Course Name" is listed under "Program Name", or sentences like "The XXX Program covers 12 weeks courses...". I have thought of 班, which actually fits in some places, but not in many others.

翻译时，不必考虑回译。如果真要考虑，那没法翻译了。就像initiative作名词时，经常翻译成：计划或战略，总不能因为有plan或者strategy的存在，而不能译成“计划或战略”。

Let's me clarify a bit. 课程 seems to be good and generally accepted, but it will be easily confused with "course". 项目 is also accepted, but easily confused with "project". 课程项目 is clear, but may sound redundant. Furthermore, there are also certain programs that are workshops, not courses.

It is also all right to call it 学程, just the same.

However, it isn't necessary to differentiate "course" and "program," since the context would differentiate them as what they are by what it means.

Thanks Wenjer. Both 学程 and 教程 may sound odd to mainland Chinese readers. On the other hand, it seems to me necessary to differentiate them despite the context. For example, in an application form, there is column names like "Program Choice", "Program Name". If we simply translate it as 课程, it is rather confusing, as it is by no means just a course. Thanks!

專業

專業啦。

program 本身是個很籠統的概念﹐它的意義很寬泛。誰都在說﹐具體含義也沒人去深究。

雖然字典不一定提供了“專業”選項﹐ 其實在大學里它指的就是專業﹐本科和研究生院的一個專業就是一個PROGRAM。你的前兩個沒有疑問﹐ 本科專業﹐ 研究生專業。第三個MBA仍可翻成專業﹐雖然它仍舊可以細分﹐到底把MBA PROGRAM翻譯成專業﹐還是把其下的專科如ACCOUNTING等(英文還是叫PROGARAM)翻成專業﹐就取決於上下文了。能讓人明白就好。

美國人有時說話很含糊﹐ 這就需要翻譯準確地理解原文的到底想說什麼。比如醫學上的PROCEDURE﹐其實很多時候指的就是手術﹐英中字典上沒有手術的解釋﹐ 翻譯們就給翻成程式﹐讓讀者看不明白。

想起一事兒﹐很多人在翻譯時不把“準確”和“正確”不加以區分﹐ 見到CORRECT/RIGHT就翻譯成正確﹐其實很多情況下它們等於ACCURATE。

台灣說法

在台湾，普遍使用”学士班、硕士班、博士班、工商管理硕士班”这一类的说法，如此可避免与"课程/科目/课目/項目"发生混淆。

It depends on the context.

And sometimes it is not good to translate the TWO words word by word. It may be easier to translate the two words as a whole.
