Spanish term

sala superior

Spanish to English Law/Patents Law (general) Puerto Rican Spanish to U.S. English
This is a court document. It starts out as follows:

Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico
Tribunal de Primera Instancia
Centro Judicial de Aguadilla
*Sala Superior*

El Pueblo de Puerto Rico

vs
**************

I saw a similar kudoz question where it was translated as "Superior Court", but I'm translating Tribunal de Primera Instancia" as "Trial Court" and it seems a little strange to me to have "Trial Court" and then "Superior Court" right after it.

I did a google search and found one site that translated it as "High Chambers", but when I googled "High Chambers", I didn't find anything having to do with courts or law.

I'm hoping there is a term that is commonly used in the legal system. Thanks in advance for your help!

superior court

I know you've talked about this one, but this is how the legal system is discussed in the wikipedia.
Don't know if that helps at all. I'll keep thinking

Chamber or Division

for example, "Fifth Chamber of the Superior Court"

I agree that it seems a bit odd but I would suggest the following:

Trial Court of the First Circuit (or Instance)
Upper Chambers

High or Main Chambers would also be OK, and in some places they use Division instead of Chambers.

Hope this helps!

upper courtroom

In Puerto Rico, "Tribunal de Primera Instancia" refers to Trial Court. I believe in this instance "Sala Superior" refers to the location of the trial within the building, as a higher court would be an appeals court.
