I left it as above...
Henry Hinds Mar 14, 2006:
That sounds pretty good. You might check to see if others have used such an expression also.
MDI-IDM Mar 14, 2006:
Aha! Now that sounds like you're hitting the same note as the original -- but I'd adopt the "rainbow" from one of the suggestions below for gay -- and I've been wondering, it's not "rosa" as in "of the heart" like the afternoon talk shows -- or is it?
SarahClarkG (asker) Mar 14, 2006:
What I think it should be... "It was a date with destiny and a pink-tinged night". Pink is used to refer to the gay world, and I thought pink-tinged made it sound better than using the word "gay" outright. The article says how Felicity Huffman and Brokeback were both due to win Oscars with performances which made reference to homosexuality. Any comments on the above translation?

touches upon the appointment with destiny and a gay night

This seems like a fragment, out of context, but "noche rosa" is, I believe, a play on words from Zona Rosa (in Mexico and other places) - zona rosa = gay district so noche rosa = gay night. I would want the sentence before and after to be sure. HTH.

neutral tazdog (X) : according to my dict. (Collins), "zona rosa" in Mex. is named after its pink paving stones

Well that may be because the area with the pink stones happens to be the "red light" district, no? ; ))

It was a date with history and a night of gay encounter

It was a date with history and a night of gay encounter

I'm in favor of "It was...".

I'd have to research it, I'm not sure that the "Zona Rosa" in Mexico City was actually called that because of gays, though I have little doubt that some may frequent that area. It may or may not be so.

It was a date with history and the gossip media.

Could this refer to la prensa rosa of Spain? (I see you're based there.)

It was a night of history and the pink world.

If the prensa rosa is out. What about this? It sounds much less poetic than yours, but this might world. "World of pink" or "pinkness" could be other options.

It was a date with history, a rainbow night

...or "a night of rainbows" would also work. You might also go a little further and say "a night of rainbow pride."

I'd stay away from pink, I think...rainbows are a universal symbol of gay pride, and I think that would transmit the same idea as in Spanish. I don't think "pink-tinged" or anything with "pink" in it would get the message across--especially since it also refers to Felicity Huffman.

agree Andrea Bullrich : I like "a night of rainbow pride". I need to catch up on movies! :)

me, too...although I did see 'Brokeback' (cried my eyes out) :-)
agree marybro : I also like "a night of rainbow pride".

thanks!
agree Muriel Vasconcellos : A stroke of genius. Personally, I prefer it without the "pride," which makes it a little less subtle.

wow, thanks, Muriel. My first choice would be "night of rainbows," I think, but I had a hard time making up my mind.
