Original translations of Hodja tales into English Thread poster: bini2011

Hi-
I would appreciate so much any information about the first translations of the Nasreddin Hodja tales into English. It's my understanding that Sir Walter Scott mayt have been the first person to make the English translations, but I haven't been able to locate any support for this.
Thank very much you for any help you can provide.

Hi Rebecca,
This may not be much of a help about your main question, but the Wikipedia article on Hodja has a lot of references and external links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasreddin (I suggest you search with the keywords "nasreddin", "nasruddin", and "nasraddin", as well as "hodja", "khodja", and "mullah".)

I don't think Sir Walter Scott did the first translations, and forgive my ignorance, but did he ever translate from a non-European language? If you meant Sir Richard Burton, he might have translated the tales from Persian -he certainly didn't know Turkish- but I couldn't find any source crediting him with a Hodja translation, either.
On the other hand, according to this page, http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/hodja.html , Talat Halman, a renowned Turkish translator who translated a lot of other Turkish works into English, made some Hodja translations. But you will see other names mentioned there, as well, and can even find some of the tales in English.
Hope this helps, and if you find anything else, please share with us here.
Regards,
Özden

Also, late Prof. Pertev Naili Boratav is also one of the person you could serch in library for his works on Hoca. You may hit other translations as well.
You may also want to check if someone studied Borrow.
I have not checked different keywords /spellings but you may want to take a look at
http://www.h-net.org/~turk/
even send a message to the network.
Good luck!
