Measurements & numeric values Thread poster: KJIDTP

Has anyone ever seen a process where the measurements and numeric values are pre-converted prior to translation? We're looking for a good way to do this for our files, to help ensure they are converted (i.e. US to metric systems) in the same way across all files and all languages. We're experimenting with a way to extract all measurements from a document, convert them, and create a glossary from this. Has anyone run into a program or other tool that might help with this... Do you think this will work? I've had a very hard time finding anything at all about doing this kind of thing on the internet, but is it really such a unique idea? Any tips or pointers appreciated! Thanks Alex, We're looking at something a little more complex, although we've used something similar to that until now. We've actually determined that we need something customized, so we're working on developing this now. Our goal is to create an application that will examine our documents, extract the measurement text and convert it to the metric system, outputting spreadsheet which we can then add to a translation glossary. | | | Trados does this automatically, if you set the option | Apr 14, 2010 |
This may be too simplistic for what you want to do, but it may worth a try. Trados has a setting to substitute measurements either in Metric or US units. You can also specify how numeric figures should be handled. To access the setting panel, open Workbench, then to the "Options" menu and select "Translation Memory Options". The third tab is "Substitution Localisation", you can find these settings there. Just an idea. Katalin | |

Thanks Katalin, Yes, it's as you said, we're aware of that option but it's just a little too simplistic for what we want to do. Not only that but we are also using Across now - which probably has it's own conversion tools as well. The built in functions will only capture some of the measurements, which means that there is also no good way to automatically check for what may have been missed. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Measurements & numeric values Protemos translation business management system | Create your account in minutes, and start working! 3-month trial for agencies, and free for freelancers!
