把外国人的名片翻译为中文时，外国的地址翻译吗？ Thread poster: lbone

碰到一个项目，有些犹豫。
个人倾向于不翻译，不翻译的好处是真要去那个地方的话，就得靠原文写的地址了，拿个中文翻译版反而麻烦。当然，华人遍天下，也未必完全无用。
但有些名片就是拿来装点的，并没指望收到名片的人真会不经邀请直接跑到国外那个地方去。如果收到邀请，主人自然会发外文地址。名片上其他都翻译了，单单把地址留为外文其实也没什么大用。如果翻译了，整个名片是全中文，看起来确实好看些。
很多客户都不太懂，有时不能指望客户来提建议。
大家怎么看？

国家和城市可以翻译，也是有用的部分，让中国对方了解是哪里人。乡村、路名等不必翻吧？

我会向客户询问，名片的终端用户是否有可能以书信与你的客户来往。
如果将一串中文地址写在信封上，并将邮件发送到一个不识汉字的地方，那邮件岂不是白寄了。

Sometimes when I encounter something like this that really depends on the client's preferences I just send the client both versions and let them choose. Would this work? Or are you translating dozens of name cards and it would be too much trouble?

如果将一串中文地址写在信封上，并将邮件发送到一个不识汉字的地方，那邮件岂不是白寄了。
I actually saw a few of these when I worked for my college's commons desk. I was always surprised that they made it that far.

我做过的名片翻译都是这么做。localize名字，但地址保留英文，除非是香港或新加坡等本来就用中文的地方。最多就是把国家的中文翻译包括在括号里写出来。应该是从邮寄信函的考虑出发吧

对于英文地址，我经常是把国家和知名城市翻出，其他不动。

这是我的做法，不只是在名片上，其他如邮件，文件中都不翻，除非客户有明确要求，主要是考虑地址可能会被用来寄信或到访，翻译后到不容易找到。

It is recommanded that foreign addresses should be kept in source language, if not, mails will not be able to be sent to the addresses. But to be safe, it's better to confirm with the client.

现在有的名片是双语的，一面中文，一面英文。这样的话，最好还是翻译一下。最近碰到一个客户就是这种情况，可能是我的报价偏高，他们最后没有让我翻译。

我碰到的项目就是这样的，别人翻译好了，地址也翻译成中文了，我负责校对。
发这贴时我还不确定要做成双面，客户没说给我看的那个英文版就是原文还是说打算在名片两面分印中英文。
后来客户确认说要把中英文分印两面，不过我考虑了各位的建议后，最后还是建议把中文那面的地址改为采用英文原文。我建议的写法是：
地址（澳大利亚）：
410 xxx Road
xxx, xxx, Australia, 7xxx
当然，这是我的建议，最后的决定他们自己做。
这是我的解释：
The address is used for two purposes:
1) Send mails
2) Really go to / find that place
It is no longer useful for these purposes when it is translated into Chinese.
When you have English on one side of the business card and Chinese on the other, yes, you already have an English version. But this does not change the fact the Chinese translation of the address is not useful for these two purposes. So when you use the English address on the Chinese side, someone who only knows Chinese (so he would not read the English side) would know this is the address to be used for these two purposes. If Chinese is placed there, he could think he could reach the people/address by this Chinese address. This is wrong. You know it is wrong, but not everyone knows it. Of course, you can keep the Chinese translation on the Chinese side for it to look neat.

不过，我建议还是将地名翻译出来，因为这六个名片的地址完全相同，稍微花点功夫搜索一下，估计从网上或纸质词典上可以找到。
