Because it has been quite some time ago since I used memoQ and a lot of hype has been created recently, I decided to install the latest version, 9.8.6, and compare it with the newest version of CafeTran Espresso, 10.8.3.

I haven’t started to write down my findings. They are very subjective and for me, CTE is the obvious winner in terms of flexibility, simplicity, speed and annual licensing fees.

The number of views for this posting is rather low, so I’m afraid that writing down my findings is just a waste of time.

BTW: As it turned out, it’s not possible to create a nice table in the Proz postings editor.

Last but not least: I only have a few days left to evaluate the mQ trial.

But of course: feel free to contribute your findings. Don’t be shy and personal prefs are allowed.

Note that with mQ you cannot pause your yearly payments: you will have to pay a penalty for any skipped years (€124/yr).

What about back-reference (\1, \2 etc) support in regex? Jul 4, 2021

And what about back-reference (\1, \2 etc) support in regex?
Is there «any-tag placeable» support in regex? (like \d - placeable for any digit)

Both apps support these features.

CafeTran Espresso supports the full Java regular expressions feature set:

(Note that Slate isn't supported on Mac!)

As a Web resource:

Screenshot 2021-07-06 at 14.35.53

CafeTran Espresso will add all fragments from all MT systems to the auto-suggestion list. I don't know whether that applies to memoQ too ...

Edit 2021-07-07:

Screenshot 2021-07-07 at 09.04.41

It looks like there is no way in memoQ to display the full text of MT suggestions:

213842813_2175270995963633_8515685686915066828_n

In CafeTran Espresso you can have every MT suggestion in a separate pane, that displays the full text. Panes can be joined in several ways (more about this in the topic Screen layout/views/pane configuration.

While further exploring memoQ, as long as the trial allows me too, I concluded that one other topic is the Features of the translation editors, like smart (multi) word selection, compatibility with dictation software, etc.

Feel free to contribute other topics!

MemoQ´s Find (and Replace) is confusing to me. I can´t always get it to work right.

In CafeTran, I like the way you can just select a portion of the Source segment and it automatically pastes it in the Target instead of having to click on Paste.

Screen layout, views, panes Jul 16, 2021

memoQ:

You can only detach the HTML live preview pane and position it freely (also on a secondary screen):

Screenshot 2021-07-16 at 10.20.07

CafeTran Espresso:

There are 6 different default window layouts:

Screenshot 2021-07-16 at 10.28.13

And three arrangements of the segment editors:

Screenshot 2021-07-16 at 10.28.17

Besides these default arrangements (layouts), CafeTran Espresso's GUI can be configured completely individual, using features as making all resources floating, joining them, docking them, positioning them on a secondary screen etc.:

Horizontal segment editors Jul 22, 2021

I've discovered that memoQ – just like CafeTran Espresso – also offers a vertical arrangement of the segment editors.

CafeTran Espresso offers smart features for the segment editors:

  • Smart case adaption when transposing words (option)
  • Smart handling of spaces when transposing words (option)

This demo shows smart selection of word groups via the mouse and transposing words both via the mouse and keyboard shortcuts:
