Yes, I remember I submitted this question long time ago.
My own answer is that I don't have time for this kind of contest.

It would probably be most interesting for new translators who are not yet fully booked up during the week.
So being the winner does not necessarily represent the whole community.

Nothing into my language Jul 8, 2022

For once, the site is biased against translators into English.

I can’t imagine ever being so busy that I couldn’t translate half a page for a contest.

I was rather keen on them at the beginning and took part in several between 2008 and 2014 (won some). By then, I considered these contests both entertaining and challenging but, after a while, I felt that they were very poorly designed. By then, I considered these contests both entertaining and challenging but, after a while, I felt that they were very poorly designed. One of the flaws is that each competitor is allowed to judge the other competitors. Are we really so impartial to be fair to other people’s entries? Then, to top it up, there was an infamous one (http://www.proz.com/forum/prozcom_translation_contests/277633-translation_contest_celebrations_congratulations_to_the_first_round_of_winners.html) where it took several years to announce the winners. So, I stopped liking them...Collapse

I think they're a great idea but I have never participated to so far. Next time I see one, I'll give it a try.

Spanish for Latin America, please! Jul 8, 2022

Spanish has two major varieties, just like Portuguese: European and Latin American. Therefore, there should be two separate contests for Spanish.

I have reviewed National Geographic magazine for Spain and for Mexico, and it is not the same Spanish language. By contrast, the English used for the UK and USA versions is virtually the same.

This happened to me a couple of times. Sometimes there are enough participants in my pair, but not enough voters.

I'm glad I stopped entering because there was no EN-IT winner in the last 3 contests:

How? Jul 8, 2022

I have no time, no interest, and never participated.
My work is already a very rewarding "contest" and I can always win the "prize": trust, positive feedback, and payment of my clients.

No Interest In Or Time For Them Jul 8, 2022

Until the end of last year, I would have never had time to participate in any translation contest, because I was too busy doing book translations, forever upgrading my education, and running my household. Also, I prefer to participate in some of the other translation-related activities this website offers, esp. if other participants act in a collegial way. I think spending time on the activities I am referring to is a lot more important than attempting to win a website contest, for more than one reason.Collapse

Don't have the time Jul 8, 2022

And I am a technical translator. So most contests are not really my type of thing.

Darwinian Jul 8, 2022

I don't like the idea of asking translators to compete against each other, like some sort of horse race. It's Darwinian.

Exactly. I've been trying to explain my vague feeling of something being wrong about these contests, and you hit the nail on the head.

For me to develop a new perspective and skill by challenging and troubleshooting all the tricky problems, which is so fun. All the contests and the contents were interesting and led me to the higher level each time.
