Does the free Wordfast version lack some features? Thread poster: Spanish-English Translator
|
I have downloaded a free, trial version of Wordfast 5.601 at www.wordfast.com. I have printed the manual and I am trying to learn how to use it. I find that some features (Export to TMX, QC dialog box) appear and disappear. Is this because I am using a free version? I use Windows 2003. The only limitation of the demo version is the size of the TM. All other functions work fully functional. Except for VLTM, but that is also a TM in a sense. | | | Thank you for your reply | May 30, 2009 |
Dear Samuel, Thank you for your reply. How do you explain that I was able to save a file as a TMX export once, but now this special feature is no longer available in the list? When I click QC, it appears the report, but there is no dialog box to enable/disable options. Regards, AT | | | Could be a bug | May 30, 2009 |
Samuel is right, the only limitation on the free version is the size of the current TM, which is why I recommended you re-install or try another version in another thread. The features that you mention are disappearing can't be turned off by accident. Either you are mistaken, or you have a version with some bugs, in that case trying another version should do the trick.

I downloaded a free version of Wordfast pro. I've heard the only limitation it has concerns the sTM size, is there any possibility to divide a big TM and create smaller ones that can be used in a single project? I remember wordsfast (older versions) gave you the possibility to upload various TMs, or am I wrong? Claudia | | | Samuel Murray Netherlands Local time: 11:47 Member (2006) English to Afrikaans + ... Which version, Argentine? | May 30, 2009 |

What version of Wordfast are you using? | | | Wordfast 5.601 | May 30, 2009 |
Samuel, I am using Wordfast 5.601. I downloaded it at www.wordfast.net, ten days ago. I also use Windows XP and Word 2003. | | | NMR (X) France Local time: 11:47 French to Dutch + ... You can create as many TMs as you wish | May 30, 2009 |

And this one is limited to 500 segments. (or 300? don't remember). Here is one solution: divide the TM in smaller ones. Place them all in the sam directory. You can only have one working TM, but you can consult the others with Ctrl + Alt + C (the Context Search function). In the list which is popping up you can choose the right sentence and copy it into your translation. But you will be working much slower. Really, it is much more convenient to buy the software. TMs grow quickly, in a few weeks they'll contain thousands of segments. The other solution is to use your TM as a background TM (BTM), but again you will be able to consult it, but the segments you translated already will not come in. NB the most convenient way to create several small TM's is to copy them and to open each one with Wordpad, then cut manually a number of lines. You should keep the first line which contains instructions for Wordfast. The other points in this thread seem bugs to me.

The limitation act a bit another way: when the TM reaches around 500 units, Wordfast will stop adding new segments, but will still work with it. However, I have seen a report from a user that she was able to produce a TM of approx. 1000 units with an unlicensed copy of WF.
