Chaque jour, de nouvelles statistiques viennent rendre compte du dynamisme de l'économie chinoise, mais il y a un domaine où la Chine populaire risque de dépasser très prochainement le géant américain, celui de l'obésité.
Une étude réalisé par le journal Health Affairs révèle que plus d'un quart de la population du pays est actuellement obèse ou en surpoids. Or ce chiffre représente plus de 330 millions de personnes soit l'équivalant du nombre d'habitants des Etats-Unis ! Peut-être plus surprenante encore est la progression accélérée de la prévalence de l'obésité depuis l'ouverture à « l'économie socialiste de marché ». Dans la première enquête réalisée sur le sujet en 1985, les autorités sanitaires avaient évalué à 0,5 le pourcentage de la population chinoise obèse ou en surpoids, en 2002, le chiffre était passé à 17 % avant d'atteindre 25 % en 2007.
L'augmentation considérable du nombre de sujets en surpoids et obèses en Chine populaire est responsable d'une recrudescence de la mortalité dans les villes, alors que jusqu'à présent, celle-ci tendait à diminuer depuis la reprise de la croissance. Ainsi les taux de décès d'origine cardiovasculaire sont passés de 48 à 61 % en mois de cinq ans. Cette évolution sanitaire est un des nombreux défis posés par la croissance dans les nouveaux pays industrialisés (Brésil, Chine, Inde, Russie).
À un mois des jeux olympiques de Pékin, promouvoir l'exercice physique ne sera donc pas de trop !
