Salut tout le monde. Vendredi, on m'a corrigé deux fois, sur des choses que j'ai apprises au lycée (!) D'abord, l'expression « avoir beau » ne veut pas dire tout simplement "to do something in vain," comme j'avais pensé. C'est plutôt "despite doing something." Donc on ne peut pas dire "J'ai beau essayer de le faire," il faut une deuxième proposition, comme "J'ai beau essayer de le faire, mais je n'y arrive pas."
La deuxième chose concerne l'expression "je suis plein." Au lycée, mon prof m'a dit de ne pas le dire, parce que c'est une expression argotique qui veut dire "I'm pregnant." En fait, ça veut dire "I'm drunk."
Bref, comme vous, je continue à apprendre. :-)

Bonjour mes amis. Il y a deux ou trois semaines, j'ai vu par hasard un article qui s'appelait « How to decipher a French menu », et me suis dit - quelle bonne idée ! Mais quand je l'ai lu, j'ai découvert qu'il n'expliquait pas vraiment le vocabulaire ; il s'agissait plutôt de comment commander dans un resto français, qui n'est pas du tout la même chose.
J'ai eu beau chercher un meilleur article, je ne l'ai pas trouvé, et finalement, j'ai décidé d'en écrire un moi-même. Je pense que c'est assez bien - il inclut les plats, la préparation, les goûts, les mets étranges que vous devriez peut-être éviter... plein de choses intéressantes et utiles. Hi everyone. On Friday, I was corrected twice, on things that I learned in high school (!) First of all, the expression "avoir beau" does not simply mean "to do something in vain," as I had thought. It's more like "despite doing something." So you can't say "Despite trying to do it," you need a second clause, like "despite trying to do it, I can't succeed."
The second thing has to do with the expression "je suis plein." In high school, my teacher told me not to say it, because it's a slang expression that means "I'm pregnant." In fact, it means "I'm drunk."

Hello my friends. Two or three weeks ago, I happened to see an article called "How to decipher a French menu," and said to myself, what a great idea! But when I read it, I discovered that it didn't really explain the vocabulary; it was more about how to order in a French restaurant, which is not the same thing at all.
Though I searched for a better article, I didn't find it, so I ended up deciding to write one myself. Source text - French Salut mes amis. J'ai vu un très bon film dimanche : « Noises Off ». Tourné en 1992, il a été adapté d'une pièce de théâtre et c'est hyper drôle - je riais / pleurais pendant la deuxième moitié tout entière. Si vous aimez la farce et/ou le théâtre et/ou Carol Burnett, Christopher Reeve, Michael Cain, John Ritter... vous devez regarder ce film.
Mon mari, ma mère (qui est arrivée hier) et moi allons conduire en Caroline du sud aujourd'hui, où habite mon oncle. C'est un long voyage - 12 heures - et nous serons là pendant seulement 2 jours, mais on va s'amuser. J'espère que les ouragans seront en vacances. :-)
Translation - English Hi friends. I saw a very good movie on Sunday: "Noises Off." Filmed in 1992, it was adapted from a play and it's very funny - I laughed/cried during the entire second half. My husband, my mother (who arrived yesterday) and I are going to drive to South Carolina today, where my uncle lives. It's a long trip - 12 hours - and we will only be there for two days, but we'll have fun. I hope the hurricanes will be on vacation. :-)
