English to Korean: Representation of Otherness and Reflection of Ideologies : A Critical Discourse Analysis of South Korean News Reports on Immigrants General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Media / Multimedia
Source text - English Representation of Otherness and Reflection of Ideologies
: A Critical Discourse Analysis of South Korean News Reports on Immigrants
This study aims to examine how immigrants in South Korea are represented in the major Korean newspapers and tries to figure out the specific ideology of Korea, which brings the particular kind of representation. The articles from four major newspapers, two conservative and two liberal ones, from 2019 to 2021 are analyzed. This study explores the pattern of Korean media othering immigrants from the perspective of critical discourse analysis based on Van Dijk’s ideological square theory and Fairclough’s framework with the criteria: 1) the words used in the headline and text, the way they are combined, and the meaning they form, 2) the formats of articles and the way they correlate with the level of the otherness of immigrants, and 3) the ideology frames reflected on the messages delivered in the articles. The findings show that the Korean newspapers employ different strategies of language use, positioning Koreans as "we-group" and immigrants as "they-group." The main characteristic of representation was describing immigrants as underdogs, victims, and beneficiaries in contrast to Korean as benefactors. This “othering” process reflects ideologies deeply rooted in Korean society, such as neo-racism, neo-orientalism, paternalism, nationalism, and pure-bloodism.
Translation - Korean
