Source text - English Hi, everyone. Welcome to the virtual Hammer Museum. I'm Claudia Bester. I'm the director of
Hammer Public Programs. And I'm very
pleased to welcome you to today's talk
by Art Historian John Walsh. Today is
part one in a series of six talks in
which Walsh will discuss drawings
paintings and etchings by the great
artist Rembrandt on rein.
Part of the talks will focus on
Rembrandt works that live right here in
southern Califórnia
and the collections of our wonderful
museums including the Hammer,
the Getty, The Los Angeles County Museum
of Art, The Huntington Library and the
Norton Simon Museum.
In fact, one of the reasons we asked John
Walsh to do this series is to encourage
all angelinos to get out and explore all
the treasures Los Angeles has to offer.
Of course as of today Los Angeles
museums are closed due to the covid
pandemic.
But I’m very optimistic that museums
will reopen soon and hopefully you'll
all be inspired to visit some Rembrandt
works around the city once it's safe to
do so.
John Walsh is a renowned independent Art
Historian. He was the director of the J.
Paul Getty Museum from 1983 until 2000.
After graduating from Yale and getting
his PHD from Columbia he worked as a
curator at the Metropolitan Museum of
Art in New York
and at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
And he taught Art History at Columbia
and Harvard.
Since he left the Getty, he's been
teaching part-time at Yale and giving
public lectures there.
last fall he gave a three lecture series
at the Hammer on Vincent van Gogh
which is currently available on the
Hammer website and I highly recommend
watching that too
Walsh is the author of many articles and
catalogs on dutch paintings of the 17th
century
and of several books including John
stain “The Drawing Lesson”
and “The J. Paul Getty Museum and its
Collections - A Museum for the New Century”.
He currently serves on the boards of the
Yale University Art Gallery and
of the Hammer Museum. Each of Walsh's six
talks will focus on one aspect of
Rembrandt's work.
Today's talk will focus on Rembrandt's
early years in training in Leiden
and how in his twenties he became
Amsterdã's finest portrait painter
attracting the admiration of leading
connoisseurs and patrons.
Next sunday at two o'clock Walsh will
talk about the narratives in Rembrandt's
work and how Rembrandt used composition,
poses, gestures and dramatic lighting to
get to the heart of whatever story he

Thanks, Claudia. I'm really glad to be
back at the Hammer
or so to speak, because I'm actually at
home, not too far away.
And so welcome to you all to my study.
I've called this series of talks
“Rembrandt Here and Now”.
By “here” I mean here in Los Angeles,
because I'll be showing you quite a
surprising number of pictures by
Rembrandt
that are in the area for you to go and
see.
And the “now” is not because you can run
out now and see them,
because museums are closed at the moment.
But now is a good time to catch up on
what's been learned about Rembrandt in
recent
years and that's quite a great deal.
Rembrandt was the dominant artist in the
dutch culture of the so-called Golden
Age
that I studied as a graduate student. And
he still is.
My teachers more or less agreed on the
qualities that made Rembrandt importante:
his skills, his knowledge, his goodness,
his candor, his independence from fashion.
My dutch friends recognized Rembrandt as
one of them.
They saw their own national virtues
embodied in him their own
best selves. Like their parents or their
grandparents,
they had been brought up with the idea
that he was not only a great artist
but also a kind of moral hero as well.
The picture of Rembrandt has changed
since then.
Scholars have helped us learn more about
his business affairs,
his patrons, the web of connections among
the people in his circle
and about his social aspirations. We're
more aware now of the sources of his
inspiration. His ambitions as an artist
are clearer and so are the careers
of the many pupils he taught in his busy
studio.
We've come to see his dealings with
people that he didn't
always have the generosity of spirit
that he'd been credited with.
His huge output of drawings and etchings
has been restudied
and for most of these 50 years the
Rembrandt Research Committee
examined just about every painting and
tried to
define what he did and didn't paint
resulting in a corpus of paintings that
runs to six
volumes and about 60 pounds.
The number of pictures attributed to
Rembrandt and the catalogs that I'd used
as a student
was initially cut in half by the
committee.
And then, in the past 20 years, the trend
reversed
and dozens of paintings that had been
downgraded or
under suspicion were reinstated in the
corpus
and quite a few previously unknown
paintings by Rembrandt have come to
light.
For these talk,s I've chosen topics that
I found particularly interesting.
Some of them tied up with my own studies
of Rembrandt and
i'm very lucky to be able to say with
acquiring works by him.
We look at what's been learned about the
Artist, what's been claimed
and what's been refuted by dozens of
academics and curators.
And we'll encourage you when
sooner or later you go back to museums
to look at the pictures
slowly and up close
so that you make the guards nervous.
Today we look at the launch of
Rembrandt's career as the most
accomplished painter in Leiden
and then in Amsterdã this portrait
gives you an idea of how talented he was
at the age of 25
and how he seized opportunity when it
arose for him in Amsterdã.
Let's just look at it for a few minutes.
I'm going to show you a few details,
things that you can see for yourself at
the Getty where it's on loan from the L.A.
County Museum.
I won't comment. I'm just going to look
with you.
This is the Amsterdã merchant Martin
Lowton
holding what looks like a letter with
his name on it and the date july
january 11 1632 and a lot of
pretend writing. The idea of the pose
is that a man of stature in the world
has taken time from his busy
profitable life to look at us and
to do that for posterity for all to see
and remember him. By
logan had his portrait painted in
Rembrandt's place of business,
a studio in the house of Henrik Ireland,
who is his dealer
and his agent and soon to be his
father-in-law.
In order to please clients like this,
look
Rembrandt first of all had to meet the
expectations that other portrait
painters had established.
The picture had to resemble you and
convey your status
in the world. And all the better
if the artist could give the spectator a
sense of being in the actual presence
of the clients, to give him the illusion
of life.
Rembrandt makes Lowton contract his
forehead a bit
and part his lips as though to speak.
The lighting and the pose and props
emphasize
the man's personality and a man of
consequence.
And if it was a woman, a person of virtue
and sympathy.
Here's an example of what an Amsterdã
client might have expected a few years
before Rembrandt arrived.
This is Paulus Moralesa painting, a
well-born man
dressed in extremely expensive clothes.
Using a meticulous technique
giving him as you can see a conventional
pose
of bland expression and very little
animation in the face.
Here's a portrait of a woman Rembrandt
painted in the same year.
Again, let's just look.
I'm sure you saw how exact the whole
thing is,
how carefully detailed her costume and
her features are.
And here's where coming close pays off.
You realize that what appears
from a distance to be in sharp focus
is not so sharp. The furrows of her
forehead, for instance,
and the corners of her eyes are just
strokes of gray.
And you can see the lighter parts of her
face
have a kind of pebbly texture, the
highlights on her nose are
thicker and they're touches of white.
The more you look, the more active the
surface seems.
Here's the head of a somewhat younger
woman by the older and very competent
painter Nicholas Elias.
Pretty much the same pose, same costume,
same color range and a pleasant but
sober expression.
But just look at the cheeks and the
foreheads. One
smooth with a bit of gloss,
the other, by Rembrandt, the distinctive
textures that he produced by a buildup
of paint
that he didn't smooth over.
And look again at the shadow on the
cheek and draw and draw in both of those
and both of them invaded by light that
reflects up from the rough.
The one on the left is uniform. Rembrandt
seems to
shifter, shimmer.
Rembrandt delivers all the clarity that
people were accustomed to paying for
plus a lot of subtle virtuosity in the
painting
to linger over and admire.
Now this is not the more familiar
Rembrandt
of the late years. His portrait with the
left on Marguerite de Gea
almost 30 years later with its terrific
directness and somber setting
and thickly applied paint
and the sense of a message intended for
us about morality and
mortality and dignity.
This is the young Rembrandt. We're
looking at the Rembrandt of refined
delicacy. At the same time, there's a
strength
in the level candor of the gaze that she
gives us. And he paints an oriole of
light around her
and he makes the background darken above
her.
This adds a subtle sense of drama and
importance to her portrait
as modest as it is.
Remember I knew this woman. She was a
niece of Henrik Ireland,
the well-connected art dealer to whom
Rembrandt lent a thousand guilders in
these days
and with whom he formed a business
partnership.
This woman, aljah, had a 21 year old
cousin called Sasuke Alvin Burr and in
the following year
Rembrandt was engaged to her.
His drawing records their betrothal and
salary and
Sasuke's birthday. The next year they
were married.
This was both a love match and a good
career move,
because he moved into a very well large
large well-to-do family that gave him
access
to a clientele that was linked together
by their merchant status
and often their religious affiliations.
This wasn't the uppermost crust of
Amsterdã society,
but these were people with money usually
recently earned
and on their way up.
Many of them lived in Ireland Burke's
neighborhood,
which is recently built up with fine
houses. That's where the
red arrow points. The city was
expanding outward from its medieval core
in the blue circle there with the dam
square
and the new church in the center.
Amsterdã had been booming especially in
these last 20 odd years during the truce
with Spain
that effectively ended the war of
independence between the rebel
northern provinces that became the dutch
public
republic and their overlord the spanish
monarchy
the dutch became a major power with
Amsterdã as their commercial metropolis
surpassing Antwerp in the southern
Netherlands.
On the waterfront there at the bottom,
you can see a vast number of small
vessels
that traded on the North Sea and the
Baltic as well as
the big three-masted merchant men that
went out to the East Indies
where they often made huge profits and
brought them home
banking and stock exchange made it the
financial
capital of northern Europe. Fortunes were
made,
disposable incomes were growing,
construction
followed suit and even middle-class
dutch people were buying works of art. It
was the
city for an ambitious artist.
Arlenberg lived up here
where you see the red arrow. Again, in a
mixed neighborhood
that was becoming a magnet for artists
and artisans
running through. It was Broadway the
braystrad
which was renamed the century later the
yoden restaurant after the well-to-do
jewish population that lived and worked
there.
And down lower right the yellow arrow is
pointing to the
way house, the weighing house that was
soon to get a large painting
by Rembrandt.
Ireland Burke was a dealer in paintings.
He handled older art and was also an
agent for
contemporary artists, a
go-between and business getter for them.
And there was a studio in his house.
Rembrandt became a border in the house
and the head of the studio.
His work in Leiden during the previous
four years had already gotten him some
notice. Especially
his small history paintings. In fact,
several of them had actually been bought
for the court of the spot holder in the
Hague
prince Frederick Hendrick such as this
small
scene of pluto abducting a very
unwilling Proserpina
and plunging them down to the underworld
with her in his chariot.
The action is lively, the craftsmanship
brilliant
and the surface is jewel-like.
To remember it now is 25. How did he get
so far, so fast? And flashback for a few
minutes to his years in Leiden.
Leiden was the second largest city after
Amsterdã but much smaller. His father
was a well-to-do miller.
You can see his grain mill there in the
blue circle,
right on the rhine which cuts through
the city.
He milled malt for the brewing business,
which was lucrative and respectable.
And his father had married above his
Station. So Rembrandt went to the latin
school
through his high school years. That's it.
The one with the stepped gable in the
picture.
You can go and look at the building
nowadays. Although the school has moved
on and there's a computer software
company in that building.
There he studied classical literature,
the bible and history.
At the age of 14 and 15, he registered in
Leiden University
and then studied drawing and painting
with Jacob from Spartanburg,
a Leiden artist who had worked for many
years in Italy.
Rembrandt learned enough after a few
years to go to Amsterdã
and work under Peter Lastman, which was
a much more important artist. In fact,
Lastman was the perfect
teacher if you wanted to be a history
painter,
which is what talented and ambitious
artists wanted to be.
Lastman had worked in Italy and he'd
observed the revolutionary changes in
venetian and roman painting in the early
17th century.
Lastman was an expert in composition,
what the dutch called
“ordinances clear legible arrangements of
figures”,
which you can see in small paintings
like this one,
which is a scene from a play by
Aeschylus, in which
two close friends argue about which of
them
is going to get to sacrifice himself for
the sake of the other.
Lastman had made a market for
high-minded subjects for the Bible from
the Bible or classical writers
and he showed Rembrandt how to give his
figures solid believable physiques
and poses and clear gestures and vivid
expressions
and how to use classical looking props
and costumes
and backgrounds.
Lastman painted the picture on the top,
while Rembrandt may still have been in
the studio with him.
The general corey elena's during a siege
was being
begged for mercy by his own mother and
wife and other women kneeling on the
ground before him.
Rembrandt adapted that composition for
one of his own
set in classical antiquity, but exactly
what subject it represents
has been debated for years. Just recently
it was identified as the two friends
Orestes and Piledes,
But, at a moment, nobody had ever thought
to paint
from a version of the story where the
king asks which of them is Orestes
and Pilates says he is but a witness who
knows
who's who objects to that that would be
the man standing at the right and
raising his hand
at a point being that Rembrandt's
picture is not
incoherent it was as people were
claiming but explicit
once you know the story that he had in
mind.
Half a dozen unknown early pictures by
Rembrandt have come to light
in the recent years since the 1970s.
The most recent being this auction item
that turned up maybe four years ago,
that shows the scene of the gospels when
Cristo tells his disciples
that rather than turning away the poor
and needy
they should allow them allow the little
children to come to him.
The attribution to Rembrandt was doubted
at the sale, but there were tantalizing
Rembrandt-like things about it.
Here with the arrows
several figures or pure Rembrandt,
including
a self-portrait at the top and the old
woman who appears in an etching by
Rembrandt.
The dealer who bought the picture had a
hunch that had been painted over in the
17th century
to improve it and finish it. The
overpaint was only partly removed when i
last
checked and got this image. It was shown
an exhibition in
Leiden and Oxford last year as a work of
Rembrandt himself,
which is probably what it is
like last month. Rembrandt worked on
small panels and pretty quickly learned
how to use a subtler
range of colors. He gave his actors a
whole repertory of exaggerated
expressions.
And, in the scene on the right of Cristo
driving
out the money changer from the temple,
the emotions are pretty obvious:
anger, fear, pain.
The old man at the bottom of the beard
seems to... the guy who's
holding the grip, his grip on the, on the
money at the bottom
seems to have been based on a drawing
that's in the Getty Museum.
Now, one of the studies that Rembrandt
made to get the pose
and the beard right
in the case here of the old
Tobit, the man on the left, the
impoverished
pious blind Tobit,
his situation in the story calls for a
display of
pathos. His wife
Anna has been to the market and brought
back a goat
and Tobit is convinced that she must
have stolen it.
He's in despair. She's astonished.
It's kind of a trivial incident in a
long rich
story, but it's a good demonstration of
the power that Rembrandt quickly
developed to paint convincing
poses and expressions.
Facial expression was his closest
study in these years.
He looked in the mirror and he recorded
his own face
over and over.
He studied himself with more persistence
than any artist
ever had. The main purpose seems to have
been,
to build his skills at expressing
emotion.
But there's some play acting too, a kind
of trying on of identities,
which we'll discuss in a later talk.
In the upper left, it's a shock to see
that he's given his own features
to a miserable looking beggar. In the
lower right,
he's a soldier wearing neck armor
that we're going to see again.
He had a talented colleague in Leiden
for a couple of years,
Jan Lievens, who seems to have had a
working partnership with him.
Lievens 's also painted his own face a good
many times
and that's the upper right painted his
friend
too. That's Rembrandt in the right.
For a few years, it's hard to tell the
unsigned painting of one artist from the
others.
This is a large panel that shows the
israelite heroine
Esther, revealing to the king the
treachery
of his trusted minister Heyman at the
left.
For a long time, the picture was
attempted to Rembrandt.
And then, to a combination of both
artists, and now
the consensus is Lievens alone painted
it.
Rembrandt was more and more ambitious in
his last years in Leiden,
especially as a painter of narrative
scenes of myth
and scripture. The little painting on the
left
shows a solitary artist, maybe Rembrandt
himself,
facing a huge panel painting
as though it were David sizing
up Goliath. We can't see what he's
painting.
Whatever it is, Rembrandt makes this
picture
an idealized image of a confrontation
of brave youth and the great unknown.
The drawing on the right may well
represent Lievens.
he's also facing a challenge, a large
round
top panel on the easel of a type we'll
see more shortly.
He looks at it intently.
In both these images, the artist pauses
to take in his whole composition,
not merely painting away at it, but
judging,
forming ideas, not executing,
but thinking. And this advertises a more
elevated idea of an artist's task
than sitting and painting.
Rembrandt's power of expression
impressed
Constantijn Huygens, the private
secretary to the prince of Orange,
who was a learned connoisseur and
something of a talent spotter.
Huygens was the first person to write
about Rembrandt's abilities.
In his diary of 1629 or 30,
he mentions two young artists in Leiden,
who were barely three years into their
careers.
Rembrandt surpasses Lievens, says Huygens,
in his sure touch and in the liveliness
of
emotions. Conversely, Lievens is superior
in invention
and in a certain grandeur of his daring
themes and forms
was taken by Rembrandt's painting of the
repentant
Judas and he wrote this amazing passage
about it:
“the singular gesture of the despairing
Judas
that one furious Judas howling
praying for mercy but devoid of hope
all traces of hope erased from his
countenance.
His appearance frightening, his hair
Torn, his garments rente, his limbs twisted,
his hands clenched, bloodlessly, tight,
fallen prostrate on his knees on a blind
impulse.
His whole body contorted in wretched
hideousness.
i place this against all the elegance
that has been produced throughout the
ages.”
So Huygens goes on to say he's amazed
that
a youth, a dutchman, a beardous beardless
miller
could bring together so much in one
human figure and express it all.
He believed that Rembrandt had the
faculty
of penetrating to the heart of his
subject
and bringing out its essence.
Remember I put his finger on quantities
in Rembrandt that we're going to
distinguish
him for 40 more years particularly that
skill
at finding in a story the emotional and
moral
center of gravity and expressing it.
A year or so later Rembrandt got a
commission to paint a portrait of Amalia
van Solms, the
wife of the stadtholder prince Frederick
Hendrick, who was the chief executive you
could say and
commander-in-chief of the Dutch Republic.
Rembrandt must have spent some months in
the Hague. Here on the right, you
see the prince riding out in red wearing
red
and had gotten at least a taste of
life at court which was
insular french speaking and small
potatoes compared to the commercial
metropolis of Amsterdã.
The portrait was evidently to be a
companion piece
to her husband's portrait on the left by
Gerard von Hunters posed in profile like
the emperors and the emperances on roman
coins.
Not exactly a format that allowed a show
of feeling
by the princess or much virtuosity
by Rembrandt either but his great
life-sized portrait painted in 1631
had been a powerful demonstration of
just those qualities.
this man Nicolaes Ruts was a merchant
who
traded with Russia, which probably
accounts for his fur hat
and his conspicuous fur trim on his over
garment, which is called a tabard
and was worn by academics and by
clergymen and other people of
distinction
or people who wanted to claim
distinction for themselves.
Rembrandt shows him turning toward us
and holding out a slip of paper
making the point that he's a man of
affairs.
His forehead is a bit contracted
as he gives his whole attention to the
spectator.
His face is patiently finished,
but everywhere you can see signs of the
painter's energy.
He paints the fur with flicks of a wide
soft brush
and he makes the wiry hairs of the
mustache by gouging
the wet paint with the butt of the brush.
The whole effect is one of mental and
physical forcefulness subdued for long
enough
to make a likeness.
Well, when Rembrandt wasn't doing
portraits, he continued to fight
historical subjects on the small scale
that Constantijn Huygens
and evidently the prince of Orange
favored.
The prince bought the picture here on
the screen
a few years earlier, perhaps
after his scout Huygens had seen it in
his Leiden studio.
Rembrandt did another version of the
subject very different,
doing away with the close-up intimacy
and, instead,
pulling back to present a scene that is
breathtaking
in its theatrical setting and lighting.
He invents
a kind of vast temple of Jerusalem,
that's a dizzy semitic
gothic fantasy swarming with tiny
figures,
a beam of light from somewhere offstage
picks out the old rabbi and the holy
family.
The light becomes a kind of messenger of
divine revelation to the jews,
who aren't actually paying all that much
attention.
Simeon's robe shimmers and seems
translucent.
Now, that robe may have been one of
Rembrandt's purchases around this time,
since he was an avid buyer of costumes
and exotic props of all kinds,
which he used for biblical and
historical scenes like this one
and also for single figures, for instance
this one, this imposing
figure at the Met. His
gorgeous outfit has recently been
recognized as turkish.
Pictures like this weren't commission
portraits
or just costume pieces. They were also
exercises in
pose and expression and also in various
kinds of lighting
and in techniques of painting, rich
fabric and metalwork and arms
and armor and so on.
They also served as examples for his
pupils,
who made copies or variations on
Rembrandt's pictures
or use them for entire compositions in
his style.
They belong to a category that the dutch
called “troney”,
a single figure in exotic or military
outfit
with no specific historical identity.
There are great many trones by Rembrandt
and his pupils
mentioned in 17th century archives.
There's a prime example here at the
Getty Museum,
that you can inspect closely and you can
see how
skillful the impression is of shifting
light and
atmosphere, how the steel armor
gleams softly and up close, how finely
painted the face is,
the expression is a touch stagey
but his eyes and his contracted brow all
add up to something, add up to
impression of apprehension, maybe
tinged with fear.
The male model in the Met picture also
posed for a kind of
imaginary portrait of Saint Peter,
identified by the keys he's clutching.
What sets this Peter apart is the
intensity of his expression.
He's clearly troubled and for a reason.
The core
of peter's story is his repentance after
he betrayed Cristo.
His expression is all the more striking
when you compare it to the other great
painter of trones and saints
his older contemporary and Antwerp Peter
Paul
Rubens.
Rubens Saint Peter wears
white. It's papal white because
he's the first pontiff of the church
and he attends entirely to God above, not
to us,
fellow humans. The image is about
sanctity
and authority. Rembrandt's image is about
guilt. His Peter focuses his guilty and
disturbed mind on the viewer,
as if he were asking for our
understanding
of his weakness.
30 years later, Rembrandt painted a
series of apostles in the same format,
but now using his most thickly built up
style of painting
with broad strokes of the brush here.
Saint Bartolomeu
holds the instrument of his martyrdom,
the knife
that was used to skin him alive.
His pensive state of mind is something
that
we can't really fathom, only try to guess
at.
Remember I kept on painting small
narrative paintings.
This one is hardly more than two feet
wide.
And I have to say it's the picture I
have the greatest feeling for
when i worked at the Metropolitan Museum.
I was very conscious that we had no
early narrative paintings by Rembrandt
and this one
was the best one in private hands
anywhere.
And i wanted it in the worst way. I
wanted to borrow it from the
cranky elderly swiss owner who had it,
but
he wouldn't talk to me. My successor
Walter Liedko managed to pry it away and
in the early
1990s it was alone at the Met, where some
of you saw it
covered with yellow varnish but in
wonderful condition.
Meanwhile i'd moved on to a museum that
needed the picture even more than the
Met
and eventually we got it. After a
judicious cleaning,
the painting looked the way Rembrandt
intended.
And I want to look at it with you for
just a moment.
This story here is from Ovid. It's how
Europe got its name. The principal,
the princess Europa of tyre in modern
Lebanon
wandering in a meadow encountered an
attractive white bull,
Jupiter in disguise of course, who was so
beguiling that she accepted his
invitation and got up on his back
for a ride. The ride was longer than she
expected,
despite her protests all the way to the
island of Crete.
And there, with a lot of help from
Jupiter, she bore a great many
important children.
Rembrandt imagines her handmaidens
theatrically distraught
and a moorish driver and an astonishing
golden wagon,
which would have looked at home parked
outside Rembrandt's temple of Jerusalem.
it's supposed to be happening on the
eastern Mediterranean, but
this looks more like a dutch river with
a fortified town of fanta,
fantastic antiquity. Rembrandt pulls off
some feats of illusion
here, like the ripply water with colorful
woozy reflections of the bull and his
passengers.
There are delightful details, like
Europa's expression of mild regret,
while she keeps a tight grip on his hide
and horn,
and the bull's eager gaze toward the
future,
his tail erect with excitement.
It's a sure thing that some paintings
like this were commissioned rather than
painted on spec but we rarely know which
ones.
We assume that Ireland Burke's house
served
as a place where portrait sitters and
visitors could look at paintings and
etchings by Rembrandt
on display and buy them or
order them. For example, biblical subjects
like this one
“The Raising of Lazarus”. We’ll return to
both of these
in a later talk.
At this point in his twenties, Rembrandt
was doing well. He was getting ahead in
his lucrative portrait practice,
he was selling history paintings with
small figures in the meticulous style
that he perfected in Leiden, he'd sold
pictures to the prince of Orange
and he was getting serious about etching.
His great leap forward though came when
he got a commission
probably through Ireland from an
Amsterdã
Physician, a prominent man:
dr. Nicholas Tulp, the celebrated surgeon,
an anatomist who wanted a portrait of
the group of colleagues,
with Tulp himself shown as their teacher
demonstrating the anatomy of the body.
It was intended for this building, the
headquarters of the surgeon's guild,
upstairs in the Santantonisvach, a
medieval
gatehouse converted to a weighing house.
It's five minutes walk from Ireland
Burke's House.
This wouldn't be the first time ever
that a teacher had been portrayed
dissecting a cadáver. Dissections were
public events. Teachers performed them in
an
anatomical theater, a small theater in
the, in the round,
where the dissected courses, corpses
of
recently executed criminals
were carved up in front of all kinds of
spectators.
Here in mirafield's picture, the doctors
surround
dr Fundameir here in the center, with a
knife
as he proceeds by opening the abdominal
cavity first.
In the sequence prescribed by Vasalius
in his book on anatomy,
human anatomy of 70 years before
Rembrandt took this dale kind of
yearbook picture formula
and turned it into something thrilling
we're not in an anatomical theater
but instead in a shadowy vaulted
building, more like the cave of Lazarus,
Tulp is not dissecting in the prescribed
Way.
He's opened up the arm, so that others
can see
how the limb and the hand work, how the
tendons
make the fingers move.
It's a demonstration of the ingenious
machinery of the body
mastered by Visalias, who, by the way, was
from the Netherlands. He was
baptized under his fundraiser
Fazalius, who was surely the author of
the big book that's propped there on the
lower right.
Dr Tulp's calling in life is to expound
this knowledge to his followers
and they react with expressions of
surprise,
excitement, doubt, wonderment.
Each pose and face different, each vivid
calm though is Tulp is utterly
calm and he's also speaking,
speaking to well-educated people,
well-educated people. Looking at the
painting, Vessels must have come
immediately to mind by Rembrandt's
group portrait some would have seen this
picture of
Visalias and his great treatise and
perhaps remembered
how he chose to be pictured showing how
the arm and hand
work just what telp had remembrance to
the painted demonstration of Tulp's own
mastery of that knowledge
by extension human's mastery of nature
and more than that of Tulp himself as
inheritor
and transmitter of that mastery.
Rembrandt's portrait practice surged
some of his clients belong to the clergy
in Ireland
circle liberal calvinists
mennonites and remonstrance.
This is the most famous and important of
all them:
a 76 year old man called Johannes
Wtenbogaert, a preacher who had been a
tutor to the prince of Orange
and a hero to moderates during the
struggles between
calvinist sexts. And now returned from
self-imposed
exile, Rembrandt gives him a familiar
gesture of heartfelt conviction hand
on his heart and it emphasizes the
heavy line on his face that seemed to be
the record of his spiritual
struggles. Wtenbogaert noted in his
diary that he sat for Rembrandt for just
one day
and that couldn't have been enough time
for Rembrandt to do more than just
sketch the whole composition
and paint his face, since the hands are
relatively crude.
The assumption is that he had help from
assistance
and that's certainly true of a good many
of Rembrandt's portraits.
One pupil of Rembrandt noted that
Rembrandt asked his portrait sitters to
bring a collar or a rough
and leave them in the studio after their
sitting,
which does solve the puzzle of how he
managed to paint something
as intricate and subtle as this man's
collar
in the very short time that he had.
Answered.
He didn't. He painted it later.
In another category altogether are the
marriage portraits of
Maerten Soolmans opien copet
life-sized. She was from a rich and
socially
prominent Family, marrying for the second
time.
She steps toward her betrothed, who
proudly shows the glove that he's
accepted from her father
which was a conventional symbol of the
time for the groom's acceptance
of authority over the woman he's
marrying.
While getting painted like this life
size and full length
had been the prerogative of highborn
people
but in Rembrandt's time things were
changing and some
merely rich people had begun to
commission full lengths
and to buy houses with the wall space
that would hold them
or build houses like that. This
man, this man for example, was a cloth
dealer
in Harlem, called Willem von Heytagen,
who paid Frans Hals to give him the
full treatment
including a sword and the cloth of honor
behind him
and a renaissance Garden.
There were social climbers everywhere
but very few
had the cheek to present themselves as
grandly as high taurjan
in full length.
The couple is dressed in spectacularly
expensive and showy
outfits. On top of that, their actions
get the message across which hasn't got
so much to do with personality or
mutual attraction but everything to do
with their family alliance
and their standing in the world.
Other sitters wanted other things from
Rembrandt,
including some movement and even
excitement.
The young woman at the right at the Met
turns in her chair to look at us.
Over the years, her portrait though was
separated from her husbands, so we've
lost Rembrandt's brilliant
invention here which was to have her
husband
lunge forward rising out of his chair
gesturing to her as she turns away as
though in modesty.
Rembrandt sticks to the convention of
having each of them look at the
spectators,
which, of course, limits what they can
express for each other.
Actually, i think I was the first to
bring these two portraits back together,
but only temporarily in an exhibition I
did of dutch
pear portraits at the Metropolitan, where
I had the
matching frames made for them, which they
still wear whenever they have
conjugal visits as they were having at
the Met a couple of years ago
when I took this cell pic, cell phone
picture.
Her portrait is both more beautifully
painted and in
better condition, but, still, when they're
put together, they generate
excitement and both portraits make more
sense.
Rembrandt had some legal business in
Rotterdam in 1634
and during his stay he painted this
portrait of a brewer,
an art collector, a man called Derek
Pesser.
That's in the Los Angeles County Museum.
It is completely conventional in its
composition
and in its grave reserve,
but it does hint at complexities in the
mind of the man, I think. And
there are many small irregularities that
you see when you look
close up
Pesser's wife. Hashya was four years
older.
She got her portrait painted at the same
time.
It's too bad that these two have been
separated too, since
in contrast to her husband, her face and
costume are so much more tightly painted
and so smooth and shiny with reflected
light.
Now, in addition to the married couple,
Rembrandt painted this
portrait on the left of an 83 year old
woman
who was evidently dear Pesser's mother
and it's one of the really unforgettable
faces from this period.
Rembrandt used a different technique for
her paint,
for her face, a thick reg irregular
kind of application of paint.
We've seen him use it before, but never
in a commissioned portrait.
One eyelid droops a little bit. Her face
is a mass of ridges and furrows,
carved in relief with the brush.
It's an amazing forward look 30 years or
so
to Rembrandt's light style.
This couple has never been separated.
This is a shipbuilder
in the act of drawing a ship's hull,
which you see on the table.
One of those fast and roomy merchant
vessels that carried much of the dutch
overseas trade.
His wife reaches out still holding the
door handle
as she makes her delivery and she opens
her mouth
as if to speak to him. This is a new and
different kind of portrait of a marriage.
It's a portrait of an active partnership.
The couple
engaged with each other and the wife
creating the action.
When I was a student, we had no idea who
these people were.
But, then, the Amsterdã archivist Isaf
and Aegen
managed to identify them. They are the
very successful master shipbuilder Jan
Rijcksen
and his wife Griet Jans. They were both
investors
in the Dutch East India Company, I think,
early investors. So think Microsoft in
the 70s,
who had the highest tax bill of anybody
living in the shipyard
district recently.
A 19th century engraving has been found
that tells us something important about
how the picture
once looked. It looked taller, with more
headroom.
Analysis of the canvas confirmed that it
has indeed been cut down.
By whom and why, we don't know.
And the space is now a lot more
compressed than
Rembrandt intended.
Here's another pair. And, again, we have
only the man in Los Angeles.
The wife has slipped away elsewhere as
you'll see,
but it's quite powerful in itself,
luminous
in the half shadows clear-eyed,
candid. It seems likely that this man is
Peter
Shane, who is a merchant in Amsterdã
and who had business with Rembrandt's
partner Hendrik Ireland.
You drive up to Pasadena, you can compare
it with a very similar
oval portrait of Dirck Pesser that we saw
earlier. Here's Pesser
and Shane together.
Rembrandt painted Shane's wife in the
following year,
painted her in a slightly submissive
pose,
with mild features, placid
and scrupulously painted.
Saskia Uylenburgh often served as model for
Rembrandt before
and after their marriage.
Here are two pictures of Saskia in
fancy dress on the right, with a big hat
and a feather and a coquettish
smile, not intended as a portrait but,
again,
what contemporaries called a “tronie”
intended for the market,
probably via the family dealer Uylenburgh.
And, on the left, she's dressed in a
gorgeous arcadian or maybe shepherd
outfit with a staff and holding a mass
of flowers.
She probably represents Flora, the
goddess of gardens.
This is another picture that underwent
major changes
long after it left the studio.
X-rays which mainly show the lead white
that artists used
have revealed a welter of form on the
right side here that
doesn't match quite what we see on the
surface of the painting,
which was obviously painted over some
earlier design.
In fact, if you look hard at it, you can
see
that, at the level of Flora's
shoulder, there's a head in profile.
And below that, a kind of scoop of
drapery.
Researchers in London showed that
Rembrandt's gentle Flora
began life as Judith, the israelite
heroine
who seduced Holofernes, the invading
Pamela Babylonian general, got him drunk
and then cut his head off.
She's often pictured doing the cutting
or
else handing the head off to her
maidservant,
which is exactly what she's doing
in Rubens's painting here at the lower
right.
You can verify the fact that Rembrandt
was thinking about this subject by
looking at the drawing
at the top, which includes the bed with
the headless corpse
and the kneeling maid stuffing the head
into the bag
with quite a change. She first held a
sword in her right hand, which Rembrandt
painted out and replaced with a staff
with ivy on it.
The severed head and the maid are gone,
but her
expression remains the calm killer,
Judith becomes the fertile Flora without
moving a muscle.
We've no idea why Rembrandt made the
change,
but it's easy to imagine a client in the
studio seeing the Judith
and asking for something, well, maybe a
bit more pleasant.
I want to return to Rembrandt's admirer,
Constantijn Huygens
and his boss Frederick Hendrick, the
prince of Orange whose court in the
Hague was responsible
for another commission by Rembrandt and
John Levins.
It was for the prince's cousin
also coined. You remember this from
earlier: the
picture of Frederick Henry and his
commission of the abduction of
Proserpina.
This was for the cousin, who is called
Frederick also Frederick V. However
elector palatinet of the rhine and
the deposed king of Bohemia
and his queen Elizabeth Stewart,
daughter of king James the first of
Inglaterra.
They were in Holanda as refugees
and as celebrities.
Frederick, the wistful man dressed as an
ancient roman emperor
had been offered the crown of Bohemia
and accepted it, which was
not a good idea, because he couldn't
speak czech and, being a
protestant, he was soon undermined by the
catholic
nobles of Bohemia and
defeated by the
invading army of the holy roman emperor.
He was king for year,
hence his famous nickname “the winter
king”.
He fled Bohemia to the Hague, bringing
his queen and six children and the crown
jewels with him.
Frederick was mocked in satirical prince
and in serious one. You see them here
after their arrival
and you see now as well
some of their possessions mainly
their stock in trade was children.
They commissioned from Rembrandt
and Lievens's this
remarkable pair of portraits
of their two eldest boys, the heirs
to the rickety trhone of Bohemia.
Extraordinary, because they're pictured
as historical figures.
On the left, Charles Lewis is dressed up
as the young Alexander, the great,
robed in gold and crowned with laurel,
being taught by his real-life tutor
who's cast as Aristotle, who was
Alexander's teacher.
Lievens makes Alex, Aristotle look out at
us,
inviting us to consider his pupil
Alexander and the enormous book that
he's been studying,
while the kid looks away into the
distances though to the future,
to his own glorious future.
Rembrandt's prince Rupert is dressed
in a turban and middle eastern costume.
He's been given the role of the young, a
prophet Samuel,
who was tutored by the venerable high
priest Eli
and himself grew to be a great prophet.
Rembrandt makes the action more literal.
Eli
points to a passage and his pupil Samuel
absorbs it.
Lievens finished his picture by himself,
while Rembrandt probably got help from
one of several of the younger pupils in
his studio almost certainly.
This one Gerrit Dou particularly painting
the wonderfully
smooth face of Rupert.
Rembrandt himself probably did the
rugged face you see on the left
of the tutor. It's been suggested
recently that when
Rembrandt left Amsterdã for,
in 1631, to set up a new studio, left from
Leiden to Amsterdã, he left Lievens
in Leiden to
supervise the commission that behave
that
remained to be carried out.
When I was a student, this painting by
Rembrandt was
rediscovered in an unexpected place, a
parish church
in a town near Bordeaux
representing Cristo the cro, on the cross
and
signed and dated 1631.
It's a stark image of an isolated victim
crying out to God at the ninth hour: “Why
have you forsaken me?”.
Both, Rembrandt and Lievens, painted the
same subject in the same year
in a similar round-topped format.
The Leaven’s is on the right.
Since Heiken's admired both artists,
he may well have asked each of them to
paint, paint the subject,
same subject, as a kind of competition, so
he could compare
them, the drawing,
you see by remember in the center might
even record this.
It shows an artist with the features of
Lievens pondering a picture on the easel
whose round top shape is like the ones
that he and Rembrandt had been painting.
Both, Rembrandt and Lievens, owed their
compositions
to Rubens, who isolated Cristo
crying out to his father.
That was their prototype, we think, in a
print that had been published in the
same year.
This is the moment, actually, to say a bit
more about Peter Paul Rubens,
whose name has already come up a few
times and will again
in lectures to come. That's because his
career
set such a dazzling example for
Rembrandt, who was a generation
Younger. Rubens had greater powers of
visualizing
stories than any northern artist ever
had.
He had a huge output of public and
private works.
Aided by a team of assistants, he had
printmakers to reproduce his work and
they must disseminate it all over Europe.
He was wealthy and lived like a prince
in Antwerp
and he had admirers among dutch
connoisseurs in high places including
Constantijn Huygens.
In any case, Rembrandt got a further
commission from Huygens
to paint two scenes of the Passion, which,
in turn,
led to a total of seven paintings of the
life of Cristo
in the same round-topped format each
about three feet high,
a project that took him seven years.
The first one was this “The Raising of
the Cross”,
which Rembrandt set in near darkness.
You can pick out a mass of mostly
faceless men
pulling and shoving the cross up,
watched by apostles and the centurion on
horseback,
who looks out at the picture as if
commanding us to watch
justice being done.
The light falls on a few figures only,
mainly on Cristo
and on a fashionably dressed young
helper, right in the center of the
picture, who has the features
of Rembrandt himself.
The artist presents himself as an actual
participant,
a sinner who bears responsibility for
what's happening.
I'll say more about that in a moment.
We assumed for a long time that
Rembrandt had in mind the famous
altarpiece by Rubens in the Antwerp
cathedral,
but there's no evidence that he ever
went there or that it was ever engraved
and besides it's very different,
not to mention being very much bigger. I’ll
show you the slide on the left just to
give you an idea of the actual
scale relationship between Rembrandt's
painting
and Rubens's enormous 15-foot older
piece.
It's also day lit romance's picture with
swarming with muscle men. Cristo is
beautifully posed, a kind of idealized
athletic figure.
A better idea was proposed some time ago
than Rubens,
that is this little woodcut by the
german artist Albrecht Altdorfer
and it might have suggested a much
simpler composition to. Rembrandt,
like all great artists, remember, was
never too proud to borrow
and he often turned to Renaissance
printmakers for ideas to Dürer,
to Lucas von Leyden and a lot of others.
Rembrandt made a preliminary chalk
drawing that was
good evidence that he was inspired by
Altdorfer first composition.
The second picture he delivered was this
scene
of a lowering of Cristo from the cross.
At the bottom left, Cristo's mother
collapsed on the ground.
Rembrandt imagines the corpse as a
misshapen
sack greenish with his
features distorted unmistakably
tortured to death.
This one is based on Rubens as
transmitted by this engraved copy,
but everything that is noble and
beautiful in Rubens
becomes horrible in Rembrandt's
adaptation.
Rembrandt puts himself in the picture
again.
It had been suggested that the motive
was to play the part of
every man in the Middle Ages, the
personification of
all sinners. Now it's been proposed that
there's
a more particular reason for him to be
there,
especially for the educated audience
that the picture was intended for.
Just a few years earlier, a prominent
calvinist minister
published a poem called “He bore our
sorrows”
that describes all Cristo's tortures in
vivid detail.
Poem says: “It was not the jews,
lord Jesus, who crucified you.
It is I, lord, who've done all this to
thee.”
This does seem to be the spirit and the
purpose that led Rembrandt to paint
himself
as one of the executioners in “The
Raising of the Cross” you saw before
and in this man receiving the corpse
in “The Descent from the Cross”.
The two crucifixion pictures got him a
commission for three more scenes
from the Passion. Those took him six
more years.
He exchanged lectures about this with
Huygens,
who is evidently not at all pleased
and, in one of the letters in 1639,
Rembrandt offers a celebrated excuse for
the delay of the pictures.
They did indeed take a long time, said
Rembrandt,
but the result was, I quote him:
“in these two pictures, the greatest and
most
natural emotion and animation may have
been observed,
which is also the principal reason why
they have been so long in the making.”
So Rembrandt was striving for emotion
and animation.
In the translation that I just read you,
the word Rembrandt used
was “behelic”, height or
movement. Dutch scholars have argued
for years over what that meant movement
is that,
literally physical action
or is it movement in the sense of being
moved
by what you see action or emotion?
The consensus now would probably be that
Rembrandt was adopting an idea
from classical rhetoric, the function of
which was to persuade the reader or
listener
by using an appeal to strong emotion.
In other words, by moving the listener,
Rembrandt's ability to pick emotions and
arouse them in the viewer
is just what you heard heihan's praise
so lavishly in the Judas painting seven
or eight years earlier.
Whatever his excuse, these paintings were
genuinely difficult for him,
in part because of their small size,
which he must have felt confining.
He certainly wanted to prove himself
with bigger things as Rubens had.
What followed after. He finished the
series but hadn't yet been paid for the
last two pictures.
Was a curious episode. He wrote this to
Huygens:
“As my lord has been troubled in these
matters for a second time
a piece ten feet wide and eight feet
high will be presented to my lord at his
home.” After Rembrandt
learned that Huygens had doubts about
accepting his gift of a 10-foot painting,
this one,
he wrote again saying that “against my
lord's wish,
I am sending this accompanying canvas
hoping that you will not decline it.”
He also requests that he get paid right
away for the last two
Passion pictures and then he adds the
only other observation about his
art on record: “My lord”, he wrote,
“My lord, hang this peace in a strong
light,
so that one can stand at a distance then
it will sparkle best.
This picture “The blinding of Samson” is
definitely a piece to
stand at a distance from in Rembrandt's
staging.
Delilah's trick has worked, she's seduced
the israelites strongman,
learned that his strength is in his hair
and has removed some
and she flees with it as the soldiers
slam him to the ground
and put out his eyes. It's
graphically violent, it's as
violent as “The Descent from the Cross”
and painted with a forceful design and
great breadth.
In fact, Rembrandt, now at the age of 30,
had to see
himself in a kind of contest with Rubens,
the greatest painter of the previous
generations. Ruben's
gen, version at the bottom, however,
looks
positively polite by comparison.
He choses the moment of the haircut.
Before
it ignites the action in the painting at
the right.
Prometheus, Rubens's most
horrific victim, is upside down and
having his liver eaten by
an eagle. Even Prometheus has a kind of
elegance
in his pose. It's the opposite of
Rembrandt's ungainly Samson
lying helpless on the ground.
A detail to turn the stomach
spurt of blood from Samson's eye
and the dagger being used to produce it
not a normal european weapon but a wavy
bladed
southeast asian dagger called a chris,
which seems somehow even worse.
With this, I'm going to end.
In the next talk, I'm going to pick up
the thread and say more about what made
Rembrandt
such a brilliant success in Amsterdã,
that was not just his portraits but,
above
all, it was his ability to
choose important events in the Bible
history, the myth and visualize them
in powerful memorable form.
We’ll look closely at this painting of the
sacrifice of Isaac
and many others besides.

“This remarkable presentation must have
taken many hours of research and
composition.
It was brilliantly undertaken and
Delivered. Roughly could you give the
audience a sense of how long
this work took you?”
Wow, I think roughly 60 years.
No I was, i got interested in
Rembrandt in graduate school. If you
study dutch art, that's what you do.
And so all along I've been keeping track
and I've written some essays about
aspects of Rembrandt and individual
pictures and worked on the catalog.
Anyway,
I have experience with the artist and
what I didn't ever
have the chance to do was develop a
lecture series for intelligent
adults,
grown-ups with an
education and some
travel and some curiosity. It was not
that's different from talking to
undergraduates I have to say so.
Furthermore, here's a confession:
about a couple years ago, maybe four or
five years ago, I realized
that I had slipped behind with
the Rembrandt literature.
It doesn't take more than a few months
to slip behind with the Rembrandt
literature. There's so much
of it. I thought: “oh it's time to
catch up and maybe if I catch up, I can
package and present
to a general audience some of the
changes,
some of the ways we don't quite think
about Rembrandt the way we used to and
particularly a lot of discoveries that
have been made in
conservation laboratories with exotic
equipment and also just made with
plain naked eye with a good deal of
expertise documentary information.
We just know a lot more about Rembrandt.
And it's important
that do scholars do this work, because
Rembrandt didn't help a lot
with it remembrance, left very few words
behind
and the commentary of people who
looked at his work in the 18th and 19th
century is
often very rich and vivid but often
mistaken in its
assumptions. So I thought it would be a
good idea to bring
Rembrandt forward with a view towards
the newer information and the
changed attitudes towards him and
assumptions we always project back on
older artists,
attitudes we have about artists we
admire in our own time
that we admire Rembrandt's abstract
qualities and we were mine
and we also inherit a predilection
for psychologizing or to
looking at portraits and assuming that
they
embody some profundities or
more important some emotional states
that the sitters who were having their
portraits made didn't have it all or may
not have had.
We have to confuse, for example,
seriousness, when we look at a Rembrandt,
with gloominess.
Anyway, there was a lot to report
to you on and I'm just getting started.
So you'll, if you stick with me for six
Lectures, you will see a whole lot that's not
generally known about Rembrandt and the
mythology about Rembrandt
is going to be a little bit weakened in
all that. I hope that's okay with you
and that's a great reminder that to
rsvp, for the upcoming lectures, you need
to rsvp for each program

we know how many assistants
Rembrandt had or their names?”
We know a lot of names. We don't have the
number. That's varied and surely there
were more than
are recorded. But
there's got to be at least
15 or 18 artists whose name we know and
who
had careers after he they left the
Rembrandt studio.
And there are mentions of others. It's a
lot of people.
This studio seems to have been
full of people acting as assistants
to Rembrandt in various menial
categories
and also helping with the preparation of
paints, paintings that Rembrandt would
then go ahead and finish.
And you heard me make some reference
to
the odd state of affairs when
we actually haven't done that yet. You
must listen to the
lecture on Rembrandt self-portraits and
I'll show you an example of an
artist who copied
a Rembrandt self-portrait so it looks
for all the world
like a Rembrandt self-portrait and we
always thought it was until
it wasn't, because a better version
turned up in the
storeroom of the Nuremberg Museum.
So just to say
what Rembrandt did with his students
in his studio is not
what typically the italians or even the
flemish artists like Rubens did, that is
use artists to make many replicas
of his work and use them
to take a picture that Rembrandt
would then finish up to
almost to completion. He doesn't seem
to have used them as a workforce in
quite that same way although he did that
sometimes.
And he didn't have the same kind of
systematic way of building up a picture
by a kind of
geometrical layout and
other things that could be
mechanically transferred and the like.
It was much more of an
academy. It's been called that as
a
terrific book by Svetlana Albert Alpers
taught at Berkeley on Rembrandt's
Academy and the ways in which it sticks
to
a fairly well-worn time-worn
practice originating in Italy, in which
you learned to draw
as a group systematically, ultimately
ending up in
working on live models.
I'm not sure it was quite that much, but
it had that aspect and there was
a diaspora from the studio
that provided artists for the whole next
generation and two generations.
I hope that's helpful.

So we have a couple of questions that
take up what you and I were discussing
earlier about
Christian and
jewish imagery in Rembrandt's paintings.
So there's two questions that are
interconnected from Anne. She says: “In
your comment about Rembrandt's painting
himself into “The Descent from the Cross”
painting,
you suggest, this painting suggests
Rembrandt's faith was deep.
Do you see that faith expressed over his
Lifetime?”
And, in a related question from Tony, he
Says: “How does Rembrandt visually
reconcile protestant and catholic
aesthetic considerations?”
Yikes.
I'm tempted to ask how much time have
you got,
because
I could just make some remarks maybe.
That would be helpful
just to clear away some misapprehensions. Rembrandt was
a believer in some broad and general
sense
and actually had his children baptized
in the reformed church.
But there were many other reasons that
he went
to the Bible,
to the Old Testament, to the New
Testament, to the life of Cristo,
for subject matter. And they have a great
deal to do,
with have little to do with
worship. In that sense, he's a protestant not a catholic,
little to do with worship but a great
deal to do with
moral formation
what we would call character
strength in adversity and also a good
deal to do with
sin people, who
make mistakes, people
who go wrong and can get themselves
right.
I think Rembrandt, much more than a preacher
about Cristianity, is
more of a moralist and does not,
certain subjects, he doesn't treat at
all things that
are, things that are illustrations of the
intercession
of saints or the blessed Virgin Mary,
images that are inducements to
pray to those images in hope for help
with the authorities upstairs. It was
not that he wanted to do, he
had a broad general commitment to using
art for
moral instruction,
but also a real
alert
taste for amusing and
pungent and unforgettable Stories.
I'm going to lay a lot of emphasis in
this series on
narrative more than perhaps you are used
to
on stories from the Bible and
both the Old and New Testaments and the
apocrypha,
which took some digging around by
Rembrandt
stories. In other words, that were not the
ones
reproduced or I should say illustrated
in
books of these 16th century and other
artists. There was a
shape flavor to a good amount many of
Rembrandt's choices of subjects
that there's always a point to it.
Sometimes the point is the extraordinary
character of the individuals, but
mostly are stories in which
somebody gets his com, comeuppance, somebody gets surprised
in an unhappy way because of
his bad behavior. The great story, for example,
from the book of Esther
about the fate of the king's servant.
She was the israelite who was
the
wife of the king. His
servant unjustly accused
one of the israelites and the king
punished him. And the story is a
suspenseful one.
Rembrandt loved it and treated it
several times.
So, in other words, there was not anything
theological, not much that's
theologically weighty or
that leads one to devotion.
But there's a great deal that gives you
thought
about how you might live a life that is
perhaps more like Saint Paul
or that has the moral courage
that is shown by the various saints you
saw
today, say, Bartholomew and you
saw
pensive Saint Peter, who's
acting out his regret and
contrition in the picture in a single
image.
So that's a little monologue. I'm afraid
that, well, maybe
connects both questions
about Rembrandt's religious beliefs and
I'll have a lot more to say about this
subject as we go along.
Fantastic. Well, I have a follow-up
question.
It's about the Passion series.
Can you just check is that the 108
Slide. KP is asking: “Why did the small Passion
series take so long and are there other,
are there many studies and drawings that
Rembrandt
agonized over feeling or is that
specific,
where he was the series emotionally and
intertwined with it?” It's a really good
question. We don't really have a clear
answer to it. And
he had to do a lot of fudging and
hedging and,
talking about what it is or we can pull
up this slide too. I'm going to bring up
slide 108 because I think that's the slide
it is, you're looking for and there's a detail
of that slide,
sorry all you peoples. Well,115
is another image of
Rembrandt himself.
The body has taken, that body has taken
this horrible
sickening image of Cristo. You have to go to Germany to see the
Issenheim altarpiece by Grünewald
to see anything as horrible
as this completely
limp boneless
man tortured to death.
But the pious person
in the picture and the only one really
showing
that kind of direct involvement with
Cristo's suffering
is the one who takes his body down and
holds it from underneath. And that's
Rembrandt's face.
What's that about? I read you
something that suggests that this
was a kind of protestant
meditation. A poet wrote
a passage in which
the writer of the poet, the voice of the
poet
says: “It was I who did this to you.
It was my sins that caused you to
undergo the suffering.” I'm paraphrasing.
And so this is
some fervente. And, if it weren't
Rembrandt's face, we would assume that
was just that's the story
that Rembrandt's there and it does seem
to profess
a kind of personal
response to the Passion
in a way that acknowledges
the universal responsibility of sinners.
He
included with Cristo's death
and the necessity of salvation.
And he's not, this is not the
only portrait of himself as a sinner.
He sure, he turns up in the, as
a little later than this
just at the time, when he's trying to
finish the rest of the series,
he shows up in a painting of himself
using his wife as a model and
as well as himself maybe his wife as the
prodigal son
drinking in an inn and welcoming you
in.
So, remember, it acknowledges
his own sinfulness twice
in this series. The very good question
was:
“How come he didn't get on with it, you
would think, if he's working for the
stockholder and the prince of Orange
and the court?” He
just in the interest of getting more
business he would paint more pictures or
paint
those faster. As you
heard, he did paint a great big
painting that was more like the style he
wanted
to practice in competition with
Rubens. A large-scale biblical narrative. And he
wanted to give that to the stockholder
who didn't want a 10-foot picture of a
man getting his eyes
stabbed out by soldiers. But,
in any case, Rembrandt was very busy. This
was a hugely successful period for him.

Watch”, he had no
time for a project that involved his continuing
to use
his much more detailed
and finely finished manner of painting
in order t

adquiriria um grande quadro
de Rembrandt.
Uylenburgh era um negociante de quadros.
Ele negociava arte antiga e também trabalhava como
agente de

intermediando e agenciando suas carreiras.
E havia um estúdio em sua casa.
Rembrandt tornou-se inquilino na casa
e o chefe do estúdio.
Seu trabalho em Leiden durante os quatro anos
anteriores já lhe tinham dado alguma
fama. Sobretudo
seus pequenos quadros históricos. De fato,
vários deles tinham sido comprados
para a corte do regente
de Haia,

pequena

Leiden era a segunda maior cidade depois
de Amsterdã, mas muito menor. Seu pai
era um rico moleiro.

Como Lastman, Rembrandt trabalhou em
pequenos painéis e aprendeu rapidamente
como usar uma gama de cores
mais sutil. Ele deu aos seus personagens um
repertório completo de expressões
exageradas.
E, na cena à direita, de Cristo
expulsando
os mercadores do templo,
as emoções são bastante óbvias:
raiva, medo, dor.
O velho de barba no fundo
parece... O rapaz no fundo que está
segurando o
dinheiro
parece ter sido baseado num desenho
que se encontra no Museu Getty
atualmente, um dos estudos que Rembrandt
fez para criar a pose
e a barba perfeitas
no caso do velho aqui,
Tobit, o homem à esquerda, o
empobrecido,
devoto e cego Tobit,
sua situação na história exige uma
representação de
pathos. Sua esposa
Ana vai ao mercado e volta
para casa com um cabrito.
Tobit está convencido de que ela
o roubou.
Ele está desesperado. Ela está atônita.
É um incidente trivial em uma
história longa e forte,
mas é uma boa demonstração da
capacidade que Rembrandt rapidamente
desenvolveu de pintar poses
e expressões convincentes.
A expressão facial era seu estudo mais pessoal
nesses anos.
Ele olhava para o espelho e registrava
seu próprio rosto
repetidas vezes.
Ele estudou a si mesmo com mais persistência
do que qualquer artista
já fizera. O objetivo principal parece ter
sido
construir suas habilidades de expressar
emoção.
Mas há também um quê de representação, uma tentativa
de experimentar outras identidades.

Na parte superior esquerda da tela, percebemos chocados
que ele deu suas próprias feições
a um mendigo de aparência miserável. Na
parte inferior da tela, à direita,
ele é um soldado com armadura no pescoço,
que veremos outra vez adiante.
Rembrandt teve um colega talentoso em Leiden
durante alguns anos,
Jan Lievens, que parece ter
trabalhado em parceria com ele.
Lievens também pintou seu próprio rosto
várias vezes.
E, na parte superior direita da tela, pintou seu
amigo
também. Aquele ali à direita é Rembrandt.
Durante alguns anos, foi difícil distinguir
obras não assinadas dos dois
artistas.
Este é um painel grande que mostra a
heroína israelita
Ester, revelando ao rei a
traição
do seu fiel ministro Hamã à
esquerda.
Durante muito tempo, o quadro foi
atribuído a Rembrandt.
Mais tarde, a um trabalho conjunto de ambos
os artistas, e atualmente
o consenso é que Lievens o pintou
sozinho.
Rembrandt tornou-se cada vez mais ambicioso em
seus últimos anos em Leiden,
especialmente como pintor de
narrativas mitológicas
e das escrituras. O pequeno quadro à
esquerda
mostra um artista solitário, talvez o próprio
Rembrandt,
de frente para um enorme cavalete de pintura,
como David avaliando
Golias. Não vemos o que ele está
pintando.
Seja o que for, Rembrandt torna este
quadro
uma imagem idealizada de um confronto
entre a juventude corajosa e o grande desconhecido.
O desenho à direita pode muito bem
representar Lievens.
Ele também está enfrentando um desafio, um grande
painel
arredondado no cavalete, de um tipo que veremos
adiante.
Ele olha para o quadro com atenção.
Em ambas as imagens, o artista faz uma pausa
para considerar toda a sua composição,
não apenas de longe, mas
avaliando,
formando ideias, não executando,
mas pensando. Esta obra promove uma ideia mais
elevada da tarefa do artista
do que sentar e pintar.
A capacidade de expressão de Rembrandt
impressionou
Constantijn Huygens, o secretário
particular do príncipe de Orange,
que era um profundo conhecedor de arte e
uma espécie de caça-talentos.
Huygens foi a primeira pessoa a escrever
sobre as habilidades de Rembrandt.
No seu diário de 1629 ou 1630,
ele menciona dois jovens artistas de Leiden,
que mal tinham três anos
de carreira.
Rembrandt ultrapassa Lievens, diz Huygens,
no seu toque seguro e na vivacidade
de
emoções. Por outro lado, Lievens é superior
na criatividade
e, na grandeza de seus
temas e formas ousados.
Huygens se apaixonou pelo quadro de Rembrandt
de Judas
arrependido. Ele escreveu esse trecho incrível
sobre essa obra:
"O gesto singular do desesperado
Judas,
aquele Judas furioso, uivando e
implorando por misericórdia, mas desprovido de esperança.
Todos os vestígios de esperança apagados de seu

Sua aparência assustadora, seu cabelo

cego.

monstruosidade.
Coloco isto contra toda a elegância
produzida ao longo da
história."
Huygens continua, dizendo que está espantado
que
um jovem, um holandês, um moleiro barbudo
e imberbe
pudesse reunir e expressar tanto
em uma figura humana.
Ele acreditava que Rembrandt tinha a
capacidade
de penetrar no coração das
pessoas que retratava
e de trazer à tona sua essência.
Huygens identificou as qualidades
de Rembrandt que o
distinguiriam
por mais 40 anos, particularmente a
habilidade
de encontrar o centro de gravidade emocional e
moral
de uma história e retratá-lo.
Mais ou menos um ano depois, Rembrandt recebeu
uma encomenda: pintar o retrato de Amalia
van Solms, a
esposa do príncipe regente Frederico
Henrique, que era o presidente, e
por assim dizer,
o comandante-em-chefe da República Holandesa.
Rembrandt deve ter passado alguns meses em
Haia. Aqui à direita, vemos
o príncipe cavalgando de vermelho, vestindo
vermelho
e desfrutando um pouco da
vida na corte, que era
insular, francófona e insignificante
comparada com a metrópole comercial
que era Amsterdã.
O retrato era evidentemente para fazer
um par
com o quadro do marido à esquerda, de
Gerrit von Honthorst. Ele aparece de perfil como
os imperadores e imperatrizes nas moedas
romanas.
Não é exatamente um formato que permita uma representação
dos sentimentos
da princesa ou muita habilidade
por parte de Rembrandt também, mas seu grande
retrato em tamanho real pintado em 1631
tinha sido uma poderosa demonstração
justamente dessas qualidades.
Este homem, Nicolaes Ruts, era um mercador
que
negociava com a Rússia, o que
explica seu chapéu de peles
e a vistosa pele em seu
casaco, que é chamado de "tabardo"
e era usado por acadêmicos,
sacerdotes e outras pessoas
distintas
ou que queriam ou que queriam
passar a imagem de distintas.
Rembrandt retrata-o virando-se para nós
e segurando um pedaço de papel
para sugerir que ele é um homem de
negócios.
A testa dele está um pouco contraída
e sua atenção está toda voltada para o
espectador.
Seu rosto está cuidadosamente acabado,
mas em várias partes dá para ver sinais da
energia do pintor.
Ele pinta a pele do casaco com movimentos de um
pincel grande e macio
e faz os pelos finos do
bigode eliminando
a tinta úmida com a ponta do pincel.
Todo o efeito é um efeito de força física
e mental imposta por tempo
suficiente
para produzir semelhança.
Quando Rembrandt não estava pintando
retratos, ele pintava
pequenos quadros históricos,
que eram os preferidos de Constantijn Huygens
e, evidentemente, do príncipe de
Orange.
O príncipe comprou este quadro que aparece na
tela
alguns anos antes, talvez
depois de seu olheiro Huygens tê-lo visto em
seu estúdio de Leiden.
Rembrandt fez outra versão do
tema bem diferente,
sem a intimidade e a proximidade
e, em vez disso,
recuando para representar uma cena que é
deslumbrante
com seu cenário e iluminação teatrais.
Ele inventa
uma espécie de vasto Templo de Jerusalém,
uma fantasia gótica
semítica vertiginosa, repleta de pequenas
figuras.
Um feixe de luz de algum lugar fora do palco
realça o velho rabino e a Sagrada
Familia.
A luz torna-se uma espécie de mensageiro da
revelação divina aos judeus,
que, na verdade, não estão prestando muita
atenção.
O manto de Simeão brilha e parece
translúcido.
Esse manto pode ter sido uma das
compras que Rembrandt fez nessa época,
pois ele era um ávido comprador de trajes
e adereços exóticos de todos os tipos,
que ele usava para cenas bíblicas e
históricas como essa
e também para personagens individuais, como, por exemplo,

figura que se encontra no Met. Seu
belo traje recentemente foi
reconhecido como turco.
Quadros como este não eram retratos
encomendados
ou apenas quadros de pessoas fantasiadas. Eles eram também
exercícios de representação de
pose e expressão e também de vários
tipos de iluminação
e de técnicas de pintura de belos
tecidos, metais, armas
e armaduras e assim por diante.
Eles também serviam como exemplos para seus
alunos,
que faziam cópias ou variações dos
quadros de Rembrandt
ou os usavam para composições inteiras em
seu estilo.
Eles pertencem a uma categoria que os holandeses
chamavam "tronie",
uma figura vestida em traje exótico ou
militar
sem identidade histórica específica.
Há muitos tronies de Rembrandt
e seus alunos
mencionados nos arquivos do século XVII.
Há um bom exemplo aqui no
Museu Getty,
que vocês podem observar de perto e ver
como
a impressão é eficiente ao mudar
a luz e
a atmosfera, como a armadura de aço
brilha suavemente e como, de perto, o rosto é primorosamente
pintado.
A expressão é teatral,
mas seus olhos e sua sobrancelha franzida
dão um quê de... dão uma
impressão de apreensão, talvez,
mesclada de medo.
O modelo masculino no quadro do Met também
posa para uma espécie de
retrato imaginário de São Pedro,
identificado pelas chaves que segura.
O que distingue este São Pedro é a
intensidade de sua expressão.
Ele está claramente perturbado e com razão.
O cerne
da história de São Pedro é seu arrependimento após
trair Cristo.
Sua expressão é ainda mais marcante
quando comparada com a do outro grande
pintor de tronies e santos,
seu contemporâneo mais velho da Antuérpia, Peter
Paul
Rubens.
O São Pedro de Rubens está de
branco. O branco é papal porque
ele é o primeiro pontífice da Igreja.
Ele está voltado inteiramente a Deus acima, não
a nós,
humanos. É uma imagem sobre
santidade
e autoridade. A imagem de Rembrandt é sobre
culpa. Seu São Pedro concentra sua culpa e
mente perturbada no observador,
como se estivesse pedindo nossa
compreensão
por sua fraqueza.
30 anos depois, Rembrandt pintou uma
série de apóstolos no mesmo formato,
mas desta vez usando seu conhecido estilo de pintura
mais denso,
com amplas pinceladas.
São Bartolomeu
segura o instrumento de seu martírio,
a faca
usada para esfolá-lo vivo.
Seu estado de espírito pensativo é algo
que
não podemos realmente entender, apenas tentar
adivinhar.
Rembrandt continua a pintar pequenos
quadros narrativos.
Este tem pouco mais de 60cm
de largura.
Confesso que é o quadro de que
mais gostava
quando trabalhava no Metropolitan Museum.
Eu sabia que não tínhamos
as primeiras obras narrativas de Rembrandt
e esta
era sua melhor obra de proprietário particular
no mundo inteiro.
E eu queria muito essa obra. Eu
queria tomá-la emprestada do
seu velho e rabugento dono suíço,
mas
ele nunca me atendia. Meu sucessor
Walter Liedtke conseguiu tomá-la emprestada e
no início
dos anos 90 foi apenas no Met, que alguns
de vocês a viram
coberta de verniz amarelo, mas em
ótimo estado.
Na mesma época, fui trabalhar em um museu que
precisava do quadro ainda mais do que o
Met
e no final o conseguimos. Após uma
limpeza criteriosa,
o quadro ficou como Rembrandt
pretendia.
Vamos observá-lo juntos por
alguns momentos.
Esta história é de Ovídio. Ela explica a origem
do nome Europa. A princesa
Europa de Tiro, no atual
Líbano,
vagueava por um prado quando encontrou um
belo touro branco,
Júpiter disfarçado, é claro, que
era tão sedutor, que ela aceitou seu
convite e montou em suas costas
para dar uma volta. A viagem foi mais longa do que ela
imaginava,
apesar de seus protestos durante todo o caminho até a
Ilha de Creta.
Lá, com muita ajuda de
Júpiter, ela deu à luz muitos
filhos importantes.
Rembrandt retrata suas servas
teatralmente desesperadas,
um condutor mouro e uma deslumbrante
carruagem dourada,
que teria sido vista em casa, estacionada
fora do Templo de Jerusalém de Rembrandt.
Deveria se passar no
Mediterrâneo oriental, mas
esse parece mais um rio holandês com
com uma cidade fortificada,
uma antiguidade fantástica. Rembrandt usa
alguns efeitos de ilusão
aqui, como a água ondulada com estonteantes
reflexos coloridos do touro e de seus
passageiros.
Há detalhes encantadores, como
a expressão de Europa de um ligeiro arrependimento,
enquanto ela segura bem no touro
e em seus chifres,
e o olhar ansioso do touro para o
futuro,
sua cauda ereta de excitação.
É certo que alguns quadros
como este foram encomendados em vez de
pintados para o mercado, mas raramente sabemos quais
deles.
Presumimos que a casa de Uylenburgh
serviu
como um lugar onde modelos de retratos e
visitantes podiam ver quadros e
gravuras de Rembrandt
em exposição e comprá-los ou
encomendá-los. Por exemplo, pinturas de temas bíblicos
como esta
"A Ressurreição de Lázaro". Voltaremos a falar
desses dois quadros
numa próxima palestra.
Nessa altura, na casa dos vinte anos, Rembrandt
estava indo bem. Ele progredia em
seu lucrativo ofício de pintar retratos,
ele vendia quadros históricos com
pequenas figuras no meticuloso estilo
que aperfeiçoou em Leiden, vendia
quadros para o príncipe de Orange
e começava a levar a produção de gravuras a sério.
Mas seu grande salto adiante foi quando
ele recebeu uma encomenda,
provavelmente através de Uylenburgh, de um
médico
de Amsterdã, um homem proeminente:
dr. Nicolaas Tulp, o célebre cirurgião,
um anatomista que queria um retrato de
grupo dos colegas,
com ele mesmo, Tulp, retratado como professor deles,
demonstrando a anatomia do corpo humano.
O quadro foi concebido para este edifício, a
sede da associação dos cirurgiões,
no andar de cima da Saint Anthonisvaag, um
portão de cidade
medieval convertido em casa de pesagem.
Fica a cinco minutos a pé da casa
em Uylenburgh.
Não era a primeira vez
que um professor era retratado
dissecando um cadáver. As dissecações eram
eventos públicos. Os professores as executavam em
um
teatro anatômico, um pequeno teatro
em que a plateia ficava em torno do palco,
onde os cadáveres dissecados,
de
criminosos executados recentemente,
eram dissecados diante de todo tipo de
espectador.
Aqui no quadro de Mierevelt, os médicos
rodeiam
o dr. van der Meer aqui no centro, com um
bisturi,
no momento em que ele começa por abrir
a cavidade abdominal.
Na sequência prescrita por Vesalius
em seu livro de anatomia
humana de 70 anos antes,
Rembrandt pegou essa fórmula
de fotografia de anuário
e transformou-a em algo emocionante.
Não estamos em um teatro anatômico,
mas, em vez disso, em um prédio abobadado sombrio,
algo como a caverna de Lázaro.
Tulp não está dissecando da maneira
prescrita.
Ele abriu o braço do cadáver, para que os alunos
pudessem ver
como o membro e a mão funcionam, como os
tendões
fazem os dedos se mexerem.
É uma demonstração da engenhosa
maquinaria do corpo humano
dominada por Vesalius, que, a propósito, era
holandês. Ele foi
batizado em homenagem a seu patrono
Vesalius, que certamente era o autor do
grande livro retratado ali
embaixo, à direita.
A vocação do dr. Tulp na vida é expor
esse conhecimento para seus seguidores.
E eles reagem com expressões de
surpresa,
excitação, dúvida, espanto.
Cada pose e expressão diferente, uma é animada
mas calma. Tulp está absolutamente
calmo e está falando
para pessoas
bem formadas. Olhando para o
quadro, Vesalius deve ter lembrado
imediatamente do retrato de
grupo de Rembrandt. Alguns devem ter visto esse
quadro de
Vesalius e seu grande tratado e
talvez lembrado
como ele escolheu ser retratado mostrando como
o braço e a mão
funcionam. Da mesma forma como Rembrandt retratou Tulp.
A demonstração pintada do domínio do próprio Tulp
desse conhecimento e,
por extensão, o domínio do homem sobre a natureza
e mais do que isso: do próprio Tulp como
herdeiro
e transmissor desse conhecimento.
Surge a prática do retrato de Rembrandt.
Alguns de seus clientes pertenciam ao clero
do círculo de Uylenburgh:
calvinistas liberais,
menonitas e remonstrantes.
Este é o mais famoso e importante de
todos:
um homem de 76 anos chamado Johannes
Uitenbogaert, um pregador que tinha sido
tutor do príncipe de Orange
e um herói para os moderados durante as
lutas entre
seitas calvinistas e que agora voltava do autoimposto
exílio.
Rembrandt o retrata fazendo um gesto familiar
de convicção sincera: a mão
em seu coração. E enfatiza a
profunda linha em seu rosto que parecia ser
o sinal de seus conflitos
espirituais. Uitenbogaert registrou em seu
diário que ele posou para Rembrandt durante um dia
apenas
e isso não seria tempo suficiente
para Rembrandt fazer mais do que apenas
esboçar toda a composição
e pintar seu rosto. Como suas mãos estão
relativamente incompletas.
A suposição é que ele teve a ajuda de
assistentes.
Isso deve ter acontecido com muitos
retratos de Rembrandt.
Um aluno dele relatou que
Rembrandt pedia a seus modelos que
trouxessem uma gola ou um "ruff"
e os deixassem no estúdio depois de
posarem,
o que explica o mistério de como ele
conseguiu pintar algo
tão cheio de detalhes e sutilezas como o colarinho deste
homem
no curto espaço de tempo que ele teve.
Resposta:
Ele não pintou naquele momento, mas depois.
Numa outra categoria, estão os
retratos de casamento de
Martin Soolmans e Oopjen Coppit
em tamanho real. Ela era de uma família rica e
socialmente
importante, e estava casando pela segunda
tempo que o do seu marido.
Ela caminha em direção a seu noivo, que
orgulhosamente mostra a luva que ele
recebeu do pai da noiva,
que, naquela época, era um símbolo convencional
da aceitação do noivo
da autoridade sobre a mulher com quem ele estava
casando.
Ser retratado em tamanho real
e de corpo inteiro
era prerrogativa de
nobres,
mas, na época de Rembrandt, as coisas estavam
mudando, e algumas
pessoas ricas tinham começado a
encomendar retratos de corpo inteiro
e comprar casas com espaço suficiente na parede
para pendurá-los
ou construir casas assim. Este
homem, por exemplo, era um negociante
de tecidos
em Haarlem, chamado Willem van Heythuysen,
que pagou Frans Hals para lhe dar o
tratamento completo,
incluindo uma espada, o pano de honra
atrás dele
e um jardim renascentista.
Havia alpinistas sociais por toda parte,
mas muito poucos
tiveram a ousadia de se apresentar tão
grandiosamente quanto Heythuysen
num retrato de corpo inteiro.
O casal está vestido em trajes espetacularmente
caros
e pomposos. Além disso, suas ações
transmitem a mensagem de que sua união não tem
nada a ver com personalidade ou
atração mútua, mas com
sua aliança familiar
e sua posição no mundo.
Outros retratados pediam outras coisas a
Rembrandt.
incluindo algum movimento e até mesmo
empolgação.
A jovem à direita cujo retrato se encontra no Met
vira-se na cadeira para olhar para nós.
Ao longo dos anos, seu retrato foi
separado do do marido, de modo que
perdemos a brilhante originalidade de Rembrandt aqui,
que era o
marido
se inclinando para a frente, levantando-se da cadeira,
gesticulando para ela enquanto ela se afasta numa atitude
de modéstia.
Rembrandt adere à convenção de
retratar os dois olhando para o
observador,
o que, é claro, limita o que podem
expressar um para o outro.
Na verdade, acho que fui o primeiro a
reunir esses dois retratos,
mas apenas temporariamente, em uma exposição que organizei
de retratos de casais holandeses
no Metropolitan, onde
consegui
molduras correspondentes feitas para eles, que eles
ainda usam em
visitas conjugais como a que houve
no Met há alguns anos
quando tirei esta foto
com o celular.
O retrato dela é mais lindamente
pintado e está em
melhor condição, mas, mesmo assim, quando

sentido.
Rembrandt tinha alguns negócios legais em
Roterdã em 1634
e durante sua estada ele pintou este
retrato de um cervejeiro,
um colecionador de arte, um homem chamado Dirck
Pesser,
que se encontra no Los Angeles County Museum.
É um retrato completamente convencional em sua
composição
e em sua solene reserva,
mas sugere complexidades na
mente do homem. E
há muitas pequenas irregularidades que
dá para ver quando olhamos
o retrato de perto.
A esposa de Pesser, Hashya, era quatro anos
mais velha que ele.
Seu retrato foi pintado ao mesmo
tempo que o do seu marido.
É uma pena que esses dois tenham sido
separados também, uma vez que,
em contraste com o do seu marido, seu rosto e
seu traje são muito mais bem pintados
e tão suaves e brilhantes à luz
refletida.
Além do casal,
Rembrandt pintou este
retrato à esquerda de uma mulher
de 83 anos,
que, evidentemente, era a mãe de Dirck Pesser,
e é um dos retratos inesquecíveis
desse período.
Rembrandt usou uma técnica diferente para
sua tinta,
digo, para seu rosto: uma espessa e irregular
aplicação de tinta.
Ele já usara essa técnica antes, mas nunca
em um retrato encomendado.
Uma pálpebra um pouco caída. Seu rosto
é uma massa de rugas e sulcos,
esculpida em relevo com o pincel.
É uma incrível antecipação de 30 anos ou
mais
no estilo da iluminação de Rembrandt.
Este casal nunca foi separado.
Esse é um construtor naval
no ato de desenhar o casco de um navio,
que vemos na mesa.

que transportavam grande parte das mercadorias da Holanda

Sua mulher segura a
maçaneta
enquanto lhe entrega o papel. Ela abre

diferente tipo de retrato de casamento.
É um retrato de uma parceria ativa.
O casal
interage um com o outro e a esposa
toma a iniciativa da ação.
Quando eu era estudante, não fazíamos ideia de quem eram
essas pessoas.
Mas, depois, o arquivista de Amsterdã Isaf
e Aegen
conseguiu identificá-los. São o
muito bem sucedido construtor naval Jan
Rijksen
e sua mulher, Griet Jans. Eles eram ambos
investidores
na Companhia Holandesa das Índias Orientais,
investidores de primeira hora - pensem na Microsoft nos
anos 70 -
que tinham a maior conta de impostos de qualquer um
que vivesse no distrito do estaleiro.
Recentemente,
encontraram uma gravura do século XIX
que nos revelou algo importante sobre
como era
esse quadro. Ele era mais alto e tinha mais
espaço livre.
A análise da tela confirmou que ele
foi, de fato, reduzido.
Por quem e por que, não sabemos.
Mas o espaço é agora muito mais
comprimido do que
Rembrandt pretendia.

Esta é outra imagem que sofreu
grandes mudanças
muito depois de ter saído do estúdio.
Raios-X que mostram principalmente o branco-chumbo
que os artistas usaram
revelaram a sombra de uma imagem no
lado direito aqui que
não corresponde exatamente ao que vemos na
superfície da pintura,
que foi obviamente pintada sobre algum
desenho anterior.
Na verdade, se olharmos com atenção, podemos
ver
que, na altura do ombro de Flora,
há uma cabeça de perfil.
E, por baixo dela, uma espécie de dobra de
tecido.
Pesquisadores em Londres mostraram que
a doce Flora de Rembrandt
começou a vida como Judite, a heroína
judia
que seduziu Holofernes, o general invasor
da Babilônia, embebedou-o
e depois cortou a cabeça dele.
Ela é muitas vezes retratada cortando
ou
às vezes entregando a cabeça dele para sua
criada,
que é exatamente o que ela está fazendo
no quadro de Rubens aqui embaixo
se corrigir.
Vocês podem verificar o que Rembrandt
estava pensando sobre este tema
olhando para o desenho
na parte de cima da tela, que inclui a cama com
o cadáver sem cabeça
e a criada ajoelhada colocando a cabeça
no saco.
É uma grande mudança. Antes ela segurava uma
espada na mão direita, que Rembrandt
eliminou e substituiu por um cajado
envolto por raízes.
A cabeça decepada e a criada desapareceram,
mas sua
mas sua expressão se mantém. A calma assassina
Judite torna-se a fértil Flora sem

Constantijn Huygens
e seu chefe Frederico Henrique, o

Jan Lievens.
Era para o primo
do príncipe. Vocês lembram deste quadro que mostrei
no início:
o retrato de Frederico Henrique e sua
encomenda do rapto de
Prosérpina.
Este quadro era para o primo do príncipe, que se chama
Frederico também: Frederico V,
eleitor palatino do Reno e
rei deposto da Boêmia
e sua rainha Isabel da Boêmia,
filha do Rei Jaime I da
Inglaterra.
Eles estavam na Holanda como refugiados
e como celebridades.
Frederico, o homem vigoroso vestido de
antigo imperador romano
tinha recebido a coroa da Boêmia
e aceitou-a, o que não foi
uma boa ideia, porque ele não
falava checo e, sendo
protestante, ele foi logo enfraquecido pelos
nobres católicos
da Boêmia e
derrotado pelo
exército invasor do Sacro Imperador Romano.
Ele foi rei durante um ano,
daí seu famoso apelido "rei
inverno".
Ele fugiu da Boêmia para Haia, trazendo
sua rainha e seis filhos e as joias
da coroa com ele.
Frederico foi ridicularizado em gravuras satíricas
e nas sérias também. Aqui os vemos
após sua chegada

Eles encomendaram a Rembrandt
e Lievens este
notável par de retratos
de seus dois filhos mais velhos, os herdeiros
do frágil trono da Boêmia.
É extraordinário, porque eles são retratados
como personagens históricos.
À esquerda, Charles Louis está vestido
como o jovem Alexandre, o Grande,
vestido de ouro e coroado com louro,
sendo ensinado por seu tutor na vida real,
retratado como Aristóteles, que foi
professor de Alexandre.
Lievens retrata Aristóteles olhando para
nós,

Alexandre e o enorme livro que
ele está estudando,

longe, contemplando o futuro,

O príncipe Rupert de Rembrandt usa
um turbante e um traje do Oriente Médio.

Ele tornou-se um grande profeta.
Rembrandt torna a ação mais literal.

Lievens terminou seu quadro sozinho,
enquanto Rembrandt provavelmente recebeu ajuda de

seu estúdio, quase com certeza.
Neste quadro, Gerrit Dou, pintou

suave rosto de Rupert.
O próprio Rembrandt provavelmente pintou o
rosto enrugado do tutor que vemos
à esquerda. Especulou-se
recentemente que, quando
Rembrandt deixou Amsterdã
em 1631 para abrir um novo estúdio,
quando partiu de Leiden para Amsterdã, ele deixou Lievens
em Leiden para
supervisionar a encomenda
que
ainda estava sendo executada.
Quando eu era estudante, este quadro de
Rembrandt era
redescoberto em um lugar inesperado: uma
igreja paroquial
em uma cidade perto de Bordeaux.
Ele representa Cristo na cruz
e
está assinado e datado de 1631.
É uma imagem forte de uma vítima solitária
clamando a Deus na nona hora: "Por que
me abandonaste?”.
Ambos, Rembrandt e Lievens, pintaram o
mesmo tema no mesmo ano
com a mesma tela de topo arredondado.
O da direita é o de Lievens.
Como Huygens admirava ambos os artistas,
ele pode muito bem ter pedido aos dois para
pintar
o mesmo tema, como uma espécie de competição, para que
ele
os comparasse.
Vemos aqui o de Rembrandt no centro. Vocês devem
lembrar deste quadro.
Ele retrata um artista com as características de
Lievens analisando um quadro no cavalete
cujo topo arredondado é como os
que ele e Rembrandt tinham pintado.
Ambos, Rembrandt e Lievens, deviam sua
composição
a Rubens, que separou Cristo
gritando com seu Pai.
Acredita-se que esse era o protótipo deles numa
gravura que tinha sido publicada no
mesmo ano.
Este é um bom momento, na verdade, para falar um pouco
mais sobre Peter Paul Rubens,
cujo nome já surgiu algumas
vezes e surgirá de novo
nas próximas palestras. Porque sua
carreira
é um exemplo tão fascinante para
Rembrandt, que era uma geração
mais jovem que ele. Rubens tinha uma maior capacidade de
visualizar
histórias do que qualquer artista nórdico
já tivera.
Ele tinha uma enorme produção de obras públicas e
privadas.
Ajudado por uma equipe de assistentes, ele tinha
gravadores para reproduzir sua obra e
divulgá-la por toda a Europa.
Era rico e vivia como um príncipe
na Antuérpia
e tinha admiradores entre os apreciadores de arte holandeses
nas altas esferas, incluindo
Constantijn Huygens.
Em todo caso, Rembrandt conseguiu mais uma
encomenda de Huygens
para pintar duas cenas da Paixão, que,
por sua vez,
levaram a um total de sete obras sobre a
vida de Cristo
com a mesma tela de topo arredondado, cada uma com
cerca de um metro de altura,
um projeto que levou sete anos.
A primeira foi esta: "Elevação da
Cruz”,
que Rembrandt representa na escuridão.
Vocês podem ver uma massa de
homens sem rosto
levantando e empurrando a cruz para cima,
observados pelos apóstolos e pelo centurião a
cavalo,
que olha para fora do quadro, como se
nos mandasse assistir à
justiça sendo feita.
A luz recai apenas sobre alguns personagens,
principalmente sobre Cristo
e num jovem ajudante elegantemente vestido
bem no centro do
quadro, que tem as feições
do próprio Rembrandt.
O artista apresenta-se como um participante
real,
um pecador que é responsável pelo
que está acontecendo.
Falarei mais sobre isso daqui a pouco.
Durante muito tempo, achávamos que
Rembrandt tinha em mente o famoso
retábulo de Rubens na catedral de
Antuérpia,
mas não há provas de que ele tenha visitado o local alguma vez
ou que a imagem tenha sido gravada
e, além disso, ela é muito diferente,
sem contar que é muito maior. Eu
vou mostrar o "slide" à esquerda apenas para
dar uma ideia da diferença de
tamanho entre a obra de
Rembrandt
e o enorme e mais antigo quadro de 4,5m
de Rubens.
A cena se passa à luz do dia no quadro de Rubens e o quadro está
cheio de homens musculosos. Cristo é
lindamente retratado, com uma idealizada
aparência atlética.
Uma ideia melhor foi proposta antes de
Rubens:
é esta pequena xilogravura do
artista alemão Albrecht Altdorfer,
que pode ter sugerido uma composição muito
mais simples a Rembrandt.
Como todo grande artista, Rembrandt não tinha
vergonha de tomar ideias emprestado
e muitas vezes buscou inspiração em gravuras da Renascença,
nas ideias de Dürer,
Lucas von Leyden e muitos outros.
Rembrandt fez um esboço preliminar com carvão,
que é
uma boa prova de que ele se inspirou na
composição de Altdorfer anterior à sua.
O segundo quadro que ele entregou foi esta
cena
da descida de Cristo da cruz.
Na parte de baixo da tela à esquerda, a mãe de Cristo
caída no chão.
Rembrandt imagina o cadáver como um saco esverdeado e
deformado,
com as
feições distorcidas, inconfundivelmente
torturado até à morte.
Este quadro é baseado em Rubens como
transmitido por esta cópia impressa,
mas tudo o que é nobre e
belo em Rubens
torna-se horrível na adaptação de
Rembrandt.
Ele se coloca no quadro
mais uma vez.
Acredita-se que o motivo que o levou a se colocar no quadro
foi desempenhar o papel de
todos os homens da Idade Média
e personificar
todos os pecadores. Atualmente acredita-se que
havia
uma razão mais específica para ele estar
ali,
especialmente para o público educado
a que a obra se dirigia.
Alguns anos antes, um importante
ministro calvinista
publicara um poema chamado "Ele Carregou nossas
Dores",
que descreve todas as torturas de Cristo em
detalhes vívidos.
O poema diz: "não foram os judeus,
Senhor Jesus, que te crucificaram.
Fui eu, Senhor, que fiz tudo isto a
ti."
Estes parecem ser o espírito e o
propósito que levaram Rembrandt a retratar
a si mesmo
como um dos executores de Cristo na
"Elevação da Cruz", que vimos antes,
e como este homem recebendo o cadáver de Cristo
em "A Descida da Cruz".
As duas imagens da crucificação fizeram com que ele conseguisse uma
encomenda para mais três cenas
da Paixão. Ele precisou de mais seis
anos para terminar essas.
Ele trocou cartas sobre isso com
Huygens,
que, evidentemente, não estava nada satisfeito com a demora
e, numa das cartas que eles trocaram em 1639,
Rembrandt apresenta uma famosa desculpa pelo
atraso na execução das obras:
"Elas realmente demoraram muito tempo", disse
Rembrandt.
Mas o resultado foi, cito:
"nestas duas obras, a maior e
mais
natural emoção e vivacidade já
observadas,
que são também a principal razão pela qual
demorou tanto tempo para serem feitas”.
Então Rembrandt se esforçou para expressar emoção
e vivacidade em sua obra.
Na tradução que acabei de ler para vocês,
a palavra que Rembrandt usou
foi "beweging", que significa
movimento. Estudiosos holandeses argumentaram
durante anos sobre o que significava "movimento"
naquele contexto:
ação física literalmente
ou movimento no sentido de ser
comovido
pelo que você vê? Ação ou emoção?
O consenso agora seria provavelmente que
Rembrandt estava adotando uma ideia
da retórica clássica,
persuadindo o leitor ou
ouvinte,
usando um apelo à forte emoção.
Em outras palavras, comovendo o ouvinte.
A habilidade de Rembrandt de escolher emoções e
provocá-las no observador
é exatamente como vocês ouviram no elogio de Huygens e
de maneira tão exuberante no quadro de Judas sete
ou oito anos antes.
Seja qual for sua desculpa, estes quadros eram
realmente difíceis para ele.
Em parte devido a seu pequeno tamanho,
que fazia com que ele se sentisse limitado.
Ele queria desafiar a si mesmo
com obras maiores, como Rubens tinha feito.
O que se seguiu depois que ele terminou a
série mas ainda não tinha sido pago pelas
duas últimas obras
foi um episódio curioso. Ele escreveu o seguinte para
Huygens:
"Como o senhor se incomodou com estas
questões pela segunda vez,
uma obra de 3m de largura e 2m de altura
será entregue ao senhor em sua
casa.” Quando Rembrandt
soube que Huygens estava em dúvida sobre
aceitar seu presente de um quadro de 3m,
este aqui,
ele escreveu para ele novamente dizendo que "contra o desejo do
senhor,
estou enviando junto esta tela,
com a esperança de que o senhor não a recuse”
Ele também pede que lhe paguem
imediatamente pelos dois últimos
quadros da Paixão e, em seguida, acrescenta a
única outra observação sobre sua
arte registrada: "Senhor", ele escreve a Huygens,
"pendura esta obra sob uma forte
iluminação,
para que, a distância,
ela brilhe mais."
Este quadro, "Sansão Cego pelos Filisteus", é,
definitivamente, uma obra para
se apreciar a distância. Na composição de
Rembrandt,
o truque de Dalila dá certo: ela seduz
o líder dos judeus,
descobre que sua força está em seu cabelo,
corta o cabelo dele
e foge com o cabelo dele, enquanto os soldados
o derrubam ao chão
e arrancam seus olhos. É uma imagem
graficamente violenta, tão
violenta quanto "A Descida da Cruz",
e pintada com um desenho vigoroso e
grande fôlego.
Na verdade, Rembrandt, agora com 30 anos,
estava
numa espécie de competição com Rubens,
o maior pintor das gerações
anteriores. A versão de Rubens
que vemos na parte de baixo da tela, independentemente
do que retrata,
é muito mais suave em comparação com a de Rembrandt.
Ele escolhe o momento do corte do cabelo,
antes
de a ação pegar fogo. No quadro
à direita,
Prometeu, a vítima mais
medonha de Rubens, está de cabeça para baixo e
tem o fígado comido por
uma águia. Há uma certa
elegância
em sua pose. Ele é o oposto do
grotesco Sansão de Rembrandt,
deitado indefeso no chão.
Um detalhe de revirar o estômago
é o jato de sangue do olho de Sansão
e o punhal usado para produzi-lo,
que não é uma arma europeia comum, mas uma adaga
de lâmina ondulada
do Sudeste Asiático chamada "cris",
o que parece, de certa forma, ainda pior.

e trabalhado no catálogo.
Então,
tenho experiência com o artista. Mas
nunca tinha tido

a olho nu, por meio de
especialistas e de informação documental.
Sabemos muito mais sobre Rembrandt.
E é importante
que os estudiosos façam este trabalho, porque
Rembrandt não ajudou muito.
Ele deixou muito poucas palavras
escritas
e o comentário das pessoas que
estudaram sua obra nos séculos XVIII e XIX
é
muitas vezes muito rico e vívido, mas às vezes
equivocado em seus
pressupostos. Então pensei que seria uma
boa ideia apresentar
Rembrandt de olho nas
informações mais recentes e na
mudança de atitude em relação a ele e
suposições que sempre projetamos
sobre artistas mais antigos,
atitudes que temos em relação a artistas contemporâneos que
admiramos,
às qualidades abstratas de Rembrandt
que admiramos
e também herdamos uma predileção
para psicologização ou para
olhar para retratos e presumir que
eles
encarnam algumas profundezas ou,
mais importante, alguns estados emocionais
que as pessoas retratadas
não tinham
nem podiam ter.
Confundimos, por exemplo,
seriedade com melancolia, quando olhamos para um quadro de
Rembrandt.
De qualquer forma, há muito a dizer
a vocês e estou só começando.
Portanto, se me acompanharem durante as seis
palestras, verão muita coisa que
geralmente se desconhece sobre Rembrandt. E a
mitologia sobre ele
vai se enfraquecer um pouco em
meio a tudo isso. Espero que não se incomodem com isso.

Ele não tinha a mesma forma
sistemática de construir uma imagem
a partir de um
esboço geométrico e
outras coisas que poderiam ser
transferidas mecanicamente e coisas do gênero.
Era muito mais uma
academia. Foi denominada assim em
um
livro fantástico de Svetlana Alpers.
Alpers dava aulas em Berkeley sobre a academia de Rembrandt
e a forma como ele se apega
a
uma prática bastante antiga
originada na Itália, na qual
você aprendia a desenhar
em grupo
e acabava
trabalhando com modelos vivos.
Não sei se foram tantos assim, mas
mas havia esse aspecto, havia
uma diáspora do estúdio
que fornecia artistas para a próxima
geração e até para duas gerações.

cristão, é
mais que um moralista. Ele não

ilustrações da
intercessão

imagens que são estímulos para
orar a essas imagens na esperança de ajuda
das autoridades lá em cima. Não
que ele não quisesse.
Ele tinha um amplo compromisso de utilizar
a arte para
instrução moral,
mas também um verdadeiro
radar
para encontrar histórias divertidas,
picantes e inesquecíveis.
Nesta série de palestras,
vou dar muita ênfase à

Londyn looking at an exhibition called
boom for real by jean-michel basquiat i
think this painting Hollywood Africans
is actually one of the best pictures in
the whole show and it's so emblematic a
baskets interests and style and
technique and what it shows is basket on
the right here with two friends Ronald Z
and toxic visiting Los Angeles the home
of the movie industry visit to the west
coast and he's presenting them as
outsiders there's that ironic twist and
what we can see is Hollywood Africans at
the top but with reference to nineteen
forty and then below Hollywood Africans
is crossed out that very characteristic
way in which he adds and then negates or
removes details in the pictures it is a
really good example listening it's full
of color
it's full of verb and it's quite
frenetic and it is as you say a comment
on Hollywood you have all this text you
also have the famous footprints which
appear in the pavement in Hollywood and
he does this very clever thing where he
crosses outwards which attracts your
attention to them so you look at the
things they've been negated and it is I
think it's it is actually very
thoughtful these things can sometimes
appear as if they're just been kind of
rustled up but I think he's really
clever at plundering and gathering and
collecting and curating text an image
and it becomes a comment really on the
history of discrimination against
African Americans particularly in the
entertainment industry we can see the
outline they have Oscar the statuette
awarded to performers and other
characters in Hollywood and it was
awarded to Hattie McDaniel for her
performance in Gone with the Wind we've
got here phrase self portrayed as a heel
there's an emotion of hitman's of
Hustler arriving to hustle in Hollywood
for success but all of the time there's
that ironic awareness that he's facing
these hurdles you know his regard is the
outs
he is the african-american but they're
gonna give it a go they're going to
chance it and the here on the top right
we've got references to sugar cane which
of course was a product largely
harvested in the south by indentured
labor I also think it taps into this
idea of working across different areas
different media he's there with two
musicians he was a DJ he played music he
was part of that New York music scene
art scene and early on the graffiti
scene and so it's that opportunity that
he takes to just break out one way of
working so I think it's quite an
exciting time where these young guys are
working across different areas coming
together and collaborating and this
painting in a sense is very
characteristic of the way in which he
makes these pictures they are
challenging they are compressed with
detail they are very dense and they are
difficult when you first look at them
you're not sure where your eye is meant
to be focusing how do these
juxtapositions produce sense and meaning
and it's I think the synthesis of these
ideas and quotations and references that
really sort of invest this charge into
the picture here we're looking at a
collaboration between Basquiat and Andy
Warhol who became friends Basquiat
actually sought out Warhol found him in
a restaurant initially and sold him
postcards this is made in 1984 and it's
called Arm and Hammer to Warhol comes in
and hand paints these two logos Armand
Hammer this brand which appears across
the states initially the brand was
playing into the idea of Vulcan and the
forge and strength and Basquiat comes in
and on the Left obliterates this central
image with one of his heroes Charlie
Parker playing the saxophone so you get
this wonderful combination of ways of
working it's wonderful because it's its
pop art and punk and jazz all in one
image they were introduced by baskets
with steel and Wars dealer Bruno Bishop
Berger
and there was a suggestion made that
they perhaps work together in some way
and this is a really successful but
lesser-known series of work and it's
reported that water would make the first
move the first gesture the senior artist
and then basket would respond in turn
and you had this sort of wonderful sort
of dialogue really between them a
conversation and you can see that basket
has totally sort of transformed this
idea of rather over walls rather deadpan
kind of mirroring of the world and I
think it's so sort of clever how basket
takes that idea the Armand Hammer the
strength the motion and he transforms it
of course into the art of music it is I
think it is a very successful piece I
mean there are two artists who admired
each other and kind of wanted to be part
of each other's art making for a period
of time so you get an older generation
and younger generation coming together
and you get these two quite disparate
ways of working actually which do come
together well as you say you get these
sort of cliched images which Warhol
reproduces and comments on and Basquiat
comes and puts this very frenetic mark
making on the top of these pieces and
that actually hangs together there is a
union that happens in the work what the
picture was illustrates is the way in
which basket is so sensitive to and so
engaged with the wider culture of the
United States Oh his use the Biggers
often great african-american athletes or
musicians allowed to rise to the sort of
full potential of their talent like
Charlie Parker which he then sort of
impresses upon the coinage so we've got
one cent here and liberty above but
really Charlie Parker just sort of
protrudes doesn't his saxophone comes
over the edge of the flat surface of the
coin into almost real space it's nice
because so do jazz wins out doesn't it
that informality kind of spills out of
the painting we're looking great at

and it's part of a series of pictures
that depict boxes and these boxes to
some extent are self-portraits but there
are also archetypes of the hero the
great victorious athlete and he
identifies with them he aspires to these
boxes they have an intrinsic power and
confidence and conviction and we can see
a halo around this rather skill lethal
looking head that also at the same time
rather resembles a gas mask it's
peculiar isn't it it's a very odd image
and actually if you said to somebody oh
it's a painting of a boxer
lots of cliches come into your head this
defies all of those and it's interesting
you talking about the fact that he
relates and refers to heroes because he
talks actually in one interview about
the artist being a kind of hero and
having that kind of role that kind of
job I think this really is a fascinating
painting and it's also part of this
resurgence of expressionist painting in
the 1980s so if you think about people
at Schnabel and Clemente in fact he
collaborated briefly with Clemente in
the 80s so there is this as I said
resurgence this this reengagement with
the artists being in the work so it
feels quite immediate and it's almost an
antidote to kind of cool pop art in a
way it's very expressive
it's very exuberant as painting and it
really captures vasquez character and
interest there's a cockiness there
there's he's almost all playing with us
it's the fantasy of many young people to
feel that they are triumphant they can
conquer the world and I'm drawn also to
the brushwork this extraordinary sort of
speed of the these sort of here the oil
stick but also the brushwork is very
voracious and lively and it's rather
entrancing to look at actually
interesting to you that you never went
to art school and he's completely self
trained and he said the way he learned
about art was to look at art going to a
MoMA going to museums and galleries as
child with his parents with the school
so everything he consumed and learned I
think he was he was he was justified be
proud of the learning that he did as an
adult he had a huge library of music a
huge library of art books so the
references are they're intelligent and
thoughtful references that go into the
work so here we're looking at Leonardo
da Vinci's greatest hits from 1982 it's
four panels of oil on canvas with
collage with drawing into it it's a
really fascinating and intense piece of
work and it really speaks with baskets
lasting obsession with anatomy if you
think about the boxer scizor portraits
Anatomy bodies has beautiful lines
appear in everything and at the top here
there's a wonderful page a study of the
back of a body there's beautiful calves
and legs and what I really like is the
way that his signature the crown
actually appears as part of those almost
hieroglyphs and he connects the panels
were these wonderful kind of draw and
ladders well he had his spleen removed
as a young child after being hit by a
car and his mother gave him a copy of
Grey's Anatomy and he becomes obsessed
with these drawings and representations
of the body like many kids do actually
and he's quoting from Leonardo da
Vinci's anatomical drawings these
extraordinary studies really of the
ligaments and musculature and bones and
it shows us doesn't it again bass ket's
awareness of artists through this
quotation but he takes it so much
further than simply copying the original
drawings there's this sort of intense
set of relationships within the picture
that lead us all over up and down these
ladders looking at the legs we've got
this projection here this sort of arm
that becomes a sort of
like a sort of spear it's so sort of
busy and rich in detail and I think it
demonstrates that Basquiat doesn't make
any differentiation between what's on TV
what's in a magazine in a commercial
what he hears what he sees in a in a
conventional history book it all goes in
and his paintings level out those
references so he doesn't differentiate
between some high art and lower high
culture and low culture and so - across
time you know the present is conflated
with the past but I think you know a
picture like this shows you how his mind
is working his extraordinary sponge you
know he it was reported by an old
girlfriend that he would just sort of
scan these books and had this facility
for absorbing and remembering details
which he can then articulate in the
paintings so ultimately you know the
question arises you know what how to
make sense of this work well it's both
made of fragments but it's also a
composite a synthesis of all of these
ideas and I think fundamentally it tells
us how he's being alert and responsive
to the world around him and he's
constantly learning and thinking and
analyzing we're now looking at Ishtar
painted in 1983 in Ishtar first to the
goddess Egyptian goddess of fertility
and war and what you'll find is how he
uses words as substitutes for rep so
pictorial representations and language
is so important in baskets paintings
it's full of these linguistic references
and quotations as well as these graphic
renditions of detailing that you might
well find in the street or in
archaeological ruins this layering over
time that he evokes in these pictures
interesting painting in that it's a
triptych it plays into this idea of a
religious work I guess and there were
lots of religious references on there
talked about Ishtar the Egyptian goddess
there are references to the jawbone
there are references to passages from
the old
testament so basket is you say is faring
well read he lays in all those
references there are lots of pieces of
film of him working with the TV on and
books open we know he was in love with
New Xerox machines where as you say he
could copy all of these images refer to
them paste them in so there is this kind
of hunger to push information into the
images but they're not logical why
should they be logical
this is post-punk New York they're not
logical you are asked to dip in and
connect to the things that you
understand what he's sifting and
collecting and editing
he's revising his decisions we've got a
really obscure references motor area
does that refer to a car well I'm
thinking actually of Neurology from his
textbooks we're looking here at kind of
little strange details of cartoon
characters and we've got hounds there
like with these sort of Thunderbolts
coming out in the central panel the eye
is really pulled in different direction
there's this some sort of enticing
quality to these paintings and we could
spend an hour looking at this picture it
is so rich in in detail and suggestion
and possibility really and just finally
I like the idea that the panel's don't
connect visually which is what you
expect you expect a seamless way of
moving around from one to the other and
he doesn't give you that which is a
brave thing to do so jean-michel
basquiat is this extraordinary
prodigious talent with this very short
life but I think what we learn is really
that these pictures still live and
there's this energy this dynamism this
curiosity about life about history but
also the present and I think he really
anticipate the age of multimedia you
know you can see Facebook YouTube
Twitter in his work he's constantly
sampling and riffing and wrapping really
on
all of these different ideas and
influences that he's seeing and also
learning about through books and other
materials I think you're right it's
almost a precursor to our social media
world isn't it and if he was here now he
would definitely be part of that or
critiquing that equally he's referring
to all those people that have come
before him Leonardo
Grey's Anatomy Rembrandt Warhol all of
those things are pushed into the
paintings and he is exquisitely good at
referencing through texts through
drawing through music actually all of
those different things that are
happening and he really is a product of
1970s 1980s New York I don't think he
could have occurred anywhere else you
have pop art you have New York going
into this sort of economic decline in
the 1970s you have punk and a new music
scene and rap in the 80s and he manages
to plunder all of those things to give
us new commentary collaboration is
really important to him musically
artistically meeting new sort of
influences mentors like Andy Warhol but
I think ultimately we come back to the
singular kind of vision he has and I
find the paint is very expressive I
think there's a lot of thought but also
we shouldn't set aside how expressive
and emotional these pictures are and
then that way he's a great kind of
romantic artist he was said that he
wanted people to connect for them to be
immediate for them to be accessible and
they definitely are you're right they do
still live
