Turkey began developing its own vaccine in November 2020
Turkey joined the list of countries developing their own vaccine against COVID-19 in November 2020. In December 2021, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan approved Turkovac for emergency use as a booster vaccine. However, as medical professionals began delivering jabs, in the absence of publicly available data from the Phase-3 trials, some experts are hesitant, saying it is too early to comment on its effectiveness.
Meanwhile, the number of newly infected patients has skyrocketed in the country in recent weeks due to the new Omicron variant, reaching 65,000 as of January 11. So far, the country has administered over 130 million vaccines for first, second, and third doses according to official statistics. Around 80 percent of the country's population has received at least two vaccine doses of vaccine. The ruling government hopes that the national vaccine, will help boost trust in vaccines and encourage more people to get vaccinated.
The national vaccine, Turkovac was developed by the University of Erciyes, the Ministry of Health, and the Presidency of Turkish Health Institutes. Phase 1 of trials began in November 2020. At the time the trials were carried out on 44 volunteers. Phase 2 and 3 were carried out in February 2021 and June 2021 respectively. Originally named ERUCOV-VAC, President Erdoğan renamed it Turkovac in June 2021. Before the national vaccine was completed, Turkey was administering Sinovac and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines. According to Bloomberg, “Turkovac uses inactivated viruses to boost immunity, rather than the messenger RNA technology that’s the basis of inoculations made by Pfizer-BioNTech SE and Moderna Inc.”
But its hasty rollout raised questions around its trustworthiness.
The COVID working group at the Turkish Medical Association issued a statement saying, “The ministry's statements that a vaccine is considered safe and effective in the absence of the published scientific study results and discussions in scientific environments, will unfortunately increase existing vaccine hesitancy.” The association added that while the homegrown vaccine could help control the pandemic globally and at home, it should only be approved for emergency use until rigorous evaluations are completed and the results are made public. The group urged the Ministry of Health to share the results of trials with the public to avoid increasing anti-vaccine sentiments.
Şebnem Korur Fincancı, the Turkish Medical Association Chairwoman, encouraged authorities to share data on Phase 3 trials in an interview with the Diken news website. “We can then understand how the vaccine was received an emergency use approval. Because, based on the data we have at the moment, the vaccine does not look suitable for an emergency use.”
The World Health Organization’s (WHO) website lists the national vaccine under Phase 2 trial.
Fincancı's reservations follow reassurances by Professor Ateş Kara, the director of the Turkish Vaccine Institute and a member of the Health Ministry’s scientific board on COVID-19, who previously told the state news agency that, “there is a rapid jump in the antibody levels [produced by the national vaccine] in studies where Turkovac is applied as a booster shot.”
Hacettepe University Faculty Member Mehmet Ceyhan disagrees. In an interview with Sozcu newspaper, Ceyhan told Sozcu newspaper that making conclusions based on antibodies and in the absence of Phase 3 trial data, is nonsensical. “Human health is at stake here. Without any sufficient data, I cannot say ‘use this vaccine or do this instead of that.’ I must see the findings of Phase 3 trials, and the so-called ‘jumping antibody level’ before making any evaluation.”
Despite the criticisms, the Minister of Health, Fahrettin Koca, received the Turkovac booster shot live during a press conference on December 29, 2021, together with other members of the Health Ministry’s scientific board.

Meanwhile, following the latest Health Ministry’s scientific board on COVID-19 meeting on January 5, the Ministry of Health reduced the quarantine period for patients infected with the virus to seven days. Previously the quarantine period was 10 days but with the rise of the Delta variant, it was raised to 14. The measures also include following the rules of social distancing, wearing masks, spending less time indoors, as well as calling on citizens to receive booster shots. No further restrictions were announced.

بدأت تركيا بتطوير لقاحها في تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر 2020
انضمت تركيا إلى قائمة البلدان التي تعمل على تطوير لقاحاتها المحلية المضادة لفيروس كورونا في شهر تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر 2020. في كانون الأول/ديسمبر من عام 2021، وافق الرئيس رجب طيب أردوغان على الاستخدام الطارئ للقاح تركوفاك كجرعة معززة، ورغم بداية عمليات التلقيح وسط غياب البيانات المتاحة لعامة الناس حيال تجارب المرحلة الثالثة، أعرب بعض الخبراء عن قلقهم، قائلين إنه من المبكر الحديث عن فعالية اللقاح.

لكن أثار طرحه السريع عدة تساؤلات عن مصداقيته.
أصدرت مجموعة العاملين في مجال كورونا في الجمعية الطبية التركية بيانًا: “إنّ البيانات الصادرة من الوزارة حيال مأمونية وفعالية اللقاح وسط غياب لنتائج الدراسات المنشورة والأبحاث في البيئة العلمية تزيد، للأسف، الشكوك في اللقاحات.” كما أضافت الجمعية أنه في الوقت الذي يساعد اللقاح الوطني في السيطرة على الجائحة عالميًا ومحليًا، إلا أنه يجب فقط أن يُصادق عليه للاستخدام الطارئ عند الانتهاء من التقييمات المفصلة وإعلان النتائج على الملأ. كما حثّت المجموعة وزارة الصحة التركية على مشاركة نتائج التجارب السريرية مع العامة، وذلك لتجنب ازدياد العزوف عن اللقاح.
شجعت مديرة الجمعية الطبية التركية، شيبنم كورر فينانجي، السلطات على مشاركة بيانات التجارب السريرية، خاصةً تجارب المرحلة الثالثة، قائلة في مقابلة مع موقع Diken للأنباء: “سنعلم حينها كيف حصل اللقاح على موافقة للاستخدام الطارئ، ولأن عند الإطلاع على البيانات المتاحة لنا حاليًا، لا يبدو اللقاح جاهزًا للاستخدام الطارئ.”
نشر الموقع الرسمي لمنظمة الصحة العالمية قائمة اللقاحات الوطنية تحت تجارب المرحلة الثانية، وقال مسؤولون إنهم يتوقعون تغذية راجعة من المنظمة قبل إرسال أي وثائق إضافية بناءً على طلبها.
تأتي تحفظات فينانجي عقب التصريحات “المطمئنة” من مدير معهد اللقاحات التركي، البروفيسور آتيش كارا، وعضو من المجلس العلمي في وزارة الصحة لوكالة الأنباء التركية: “هناك قفزة في مستويات الأجسام المضادة الناتجة من اللقاح الوطني وفقًا للدراسات التي أثبتت استخدام اللقاح كجرعة معززة.”
لا يتفق عضو هيئة التدريس في جامعة هاسيتيب، محمد جيهان، بعد مقابلة مع صحيفة Sozcu، إذ وصف التوصل إلى استنتاجات تستند إلى الأجسام المضادة فقط ومع غياب بيانات تجارب المرحلة الثالثة “غير المنطقية”، مضيفًا: “إنّ صحة الإنسان هنا على المحك، ولا أستطيع أن اجيز استخدام هذا اللقاح وأن اتخذ قرارات بدون وجود بيانات كافية، يجب أن أرى بيانات تجارب المرحلة الثالثة وما يسمى بقفزة على مستوى الأجسام المضادة قبل إجراء أي تقييم”.
رغم الانتقادات، تلقى وزير الصحة، فخر الدين قوجة، الجرعة المعززة من تركوفاك خلال مؤتمر صحفي مباشر في 29 كانون الأول/ديسمبر 2021، برفقة أعضاء من المجلس العلمي التابع للوزارة.
"تلقيت اليوم الجرعة المعززة من لقاحنا الوطني “تركوفاك” في مستشفى “أنقرة شهير” برفقة أعضاء من المجلس العلمي."
عقب الاجتماع الأخير للمجلس العلمي عن كورونا في 5 كانون الثاني/يناير 2022، خفضت وزارة الصحة فترة الحجر الصحي للمصابين بالفيروس إلى 7 أيام، وكانت فترة الحجر 10 أيام قبل أن تصبح 14 يومًا بسبب انتشار متحور دلتا. وتتمثل الإجراءات أيضًا باتباع قواعد التباعد الاجتماعي والالتزام بلبس الكمامات وتجنب البقاء في الأماكن المغلقة لمدة طويلة، وكذلك دعت الوزارة المواطنين إلى تلقي الجرعة المعززة، ولم يتم الإعلان عن قيود أخرى.

On January 27, Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sophie Wilmès launched the new Belgian passport. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the new passport is more secure thanks to new security and personalization techniques, while the new original design makes it more recognizable “honoring one of the jewels of [Belgian] culture: the heroines and heroes of comic strips.”
The ministry also published a video clip presenting the leafing through the new passport.
The front part of the passport containing the personal data features scenes from the legendary Tintin episode “Destination Moon,” including the iconic rocket, a model of which also serves as mascot at the Brussels Airport.
"The new Belgian passport honours one of the jewels of our culture: the heroines and heroes of comic strips whose main theme is travel. The work of Hergé had to be represented, then Tintin will accompany you on your next adventures!"
Internal pages of the passport present stylized scenes from various Belgian comics, and, alongside Tintin and Captain Haddock, one can recognize the flight attendant Natacha, Marsupilami, Billy & Buddy (Boule et Bill), Blake & Mortimer, the Smurfs, Lucky Luke & the Daltons, and Spirou & Fantasio.
The ministry announced that the new passport was made through exceptional collaboration with the publishing houses and right holders, who have agreed to use their famous cartoon figures to illustrate the document.
On the occasion of the launch of the new passport, a temporary exhibition on the history of the Belgian passport will be accessible at the Comics Art Museum from January 28 to March 6, 2022.
In her official statement, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sophie Wilmès stressed:
“The Belgian passport is one of the best in the world, it is a source of pride for us, but also an object of desire for counterfeiters. This is why we are constantly working to improve its security. The introduction of this new passport is also an opportunity for us to highlight the 9th art, the comic strip, which is a central element of our culture and our influence abroad. I would like to thank the publishers, authors and rights holders who have agreed to participate in the project. Finally, a very important point for me: the quality and security of the passport have been reinforced, but the price charged by the Foreign Affairs will not increase. In a context of general price increases, this is a strong gesture that will be cost-beneficial for our citizens.”
The ministry charges EUR 65 for adults and EUR 35 for minors, plus possible municipal taxes. The passport is valid for 7 years for adults and 5 years for minors. It can be obtained in 5 working days via standard procedure, or in a day or less through the urgent or super urgent procedures procedures, at extra cost.
The response by both Belgian citizens and international comics fans have been overwhelmingly positive.

French political analyst commented on Twitter that “the new Belgian passport is genuinely very cool,” while US cartoonist and art professor Ben Towle designated it as “amazing!”
Belgian diplomat Michael Cerulus expressed his opinion in typically understated and diplomatic Belgian style.
"Let’s say it reflects a shift from a somewhat exclusive and formal character of international travel to a more relaxed and open-minded experience."

أعلنت الوزارة أن جواز السفر الجديد هو نتيجة تعاون مع دور النشر وأصحاب الحقوق الذين وافقوا على استخدام شخصياتهم الكرتونية الشهيرة لتزييّنه.
بمناسبة إطلاق جواز السفر الجديد، سيقام معرض مؤقت عن تاريخ جواز السفر البلجيكي في متحف الرسوم الهزلية ابتداءً من تاريخ 28 كانون الثاني/يناير إلى 6 آذار/مارس 2022.
أكدت نائبة رئيس الوزراء ووزيرة الشؤون الخارجية للبلاد صوفي ويليامز في بيان لها:
يُعدّ الجواز البلجيكي من أفضل الجوازات في العالم، وهو محط فخر لنا، لكنّه في الوقت عينه يُعتبر هدفًا للمزورين، مما جعل هذا سببًا للعمل على تحسين أمنه. إنّ تقديم جواز السفر الجديد يُعتبر فرصة لنا لتسليط الضوء على الفن التاسع المتمثل بالصور المتحركة، التي تُعتبر عنصرًا محوريًا في ثقافتنا وتأثيرنا في الخارج. أوّد أن أشكر الناشرين والمؤلفين وأصحاب الحقوق الذين وافقوا على المشاركة في هذا المشروع. في النهاية، أُريد أن أتطرق لنقطة في غاية الأهمية بالنسبة لي، وهي أن جودة وأمان جواز السفر قد عُززت وأن سعر رسومه التي وضعتها وزارة الشؤون الخارجية ستبقى كما هي بدون أي زيادة. في سياق الزيادة العامة بالأسعار، فهذه بادرة قوية ومفيدة من حيث التكلفة لمواطنينا.”
تبلغ رسوم جواز السفر 65 يورو للبالغين و35 يورو للقصّر، بالإضافة إلى رسوم البلدية المحتملة. هو صالح لمدة 7 أعوام للبالغين و5 أعوام للقصّر. يستغرق الحصول عليه حوالي 5 أيام عمل من خلال إجراء عادي، وبإمكان الشخص أن يُقدّم طلب الإجراء المستعجل للحصول عليه في غضون يوم أو أقل، لكن بتكاليف إضافية.
لاقى جواز السفر الجديد ترحيبًا من المواطنين البلجيكيين وعشاق الرسوم الهزلية من حول العالم.
