Born in the UK to English parents, my mother grew up in India and her first language was Urdu, however she also spoke Dutch and Afrikaans. Hence I was always exposed to different languages and had a great love for, and ability in, French when I was at school. After school I lived firstly in Brittany (France) before returning to the UK to work as a bi-lingual employee for Air Canada. From Air Canada I moved to Paris and spent two years working as a bi- lingual administrator for Airport Courier Services, on Rue La Boëtie, before returning to the UK (and Air Canada) for health reasons. In 1990 I married and the following year my husband and I cycled on pushbikes from the UK to Israel, and 4 and 5 years later my two sons were born. During this time I studied and became quite capable of reading, writing and speaking Hebrew. In 2002 our family moved to Spain and within 4 months I was employed in an estate agency where one of the pre-requisites was that all employees should speak both Spanish and English. This was a great challenge to me at first but has enabled me to reach the level of proficiency in Spanish which I have now. I regularly interpret and have translated a number of documents over the years, mainly doctors' reports and for local businesses. I also have full-time work as a proofreader for an English medical transcription service. We still live in Spain and my two sons are bi-lingual. Languages are my passion and as well as Hebrew I can read Arabic script, and have dabbled in German, Chinese, Japanese and Italian, but only for fun! |
