We've compiled these tips and frequently asked questions to help you plan your show. Three thousand-plus exhibitors, 77,000 attendees and a jam-packed education schedule. It's almost time to gather in Anaheim for organic, non-GMO, health and doing business for good. Let Natural Foods Merchandiser help you find your way around with the tips below.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1.Where do I need my badge at Natural Products Expo West?
To ease traffic going in and out of the exhibit halls, you need to present a badge and ID to enter the Anaheim Convention Center, not the show floor. Look for designated entry doors. Exhibitors and Super Pass holders have separate entrances. You will also need your badge to enter education sessions and on-site events. For badge pickup and registration locations, see the Expo West website.
2.I’m driving my car to the Anaheim Convention Center. Where is the best place to park?
It will be extremely congested near the convention center and parking will be limited this year because of construction and expanded on-campus activities. To avoid the chaos, we recommend parking for free at nearby Angel Stadium. Free shuttles are available throughout the day from the stadium to the Anaheim Convention Center and back. To take the shuttle from the Convention Center to Angel Stadium, load near Katella Avenue (by the Arena). Bonus: Avoid on-site registration lines by printing your badge at Angel Stadium after you’ve parked.
3.Can I register additional teammates in Anaheim?
Yes. Full-service registration will be available at the Hilton and education upgrades are available at the Marriott. While this service is available, Expo West organizers recommend registering staff before you arrive at the show to save time and avoid lines. If you do need to register someone on-site, don’t forget to bring valid business proof and identification (details at expowest.com).
4.How do I navigate the show floor?
The show floor is expansive, so it’s best to plan your route in advance. The Exhibitor List on the Expo West website is helpful, as are show maps available on-site. With all of the new exhibitors, though, you might need reading glasses to navigate by map. For ease, we recommend downloading the Natural Products Expo West/Engredea app for your phone or tablet. With the app, you can access the Exhibitor List, education schedule, events and a navigation tool, all while on the go. Get the app at m.expowest.com.
5.Is it hard to find places to eat while at Expo West?
There are restaurants nearby (think Cheesecake Factory, Anaheim Brewery, Joe’s Crabshack) but they fill up quickly. If you’re planning a dinner outing or team meal, call ahead and reserve space. If you need a quick bite to eat, the Hilton Food Court across from the convention center might satisfy your need. Pull up your favorite ride sharing app and get a ride to the Anaheim Packing House, 440 S. Anaheim Blvd. The food hall features several restaurants, bars, shopping and live entertainment. Downtown Disney makes for a nice walk or short ride, too.
6.I brought my children so we could go to amusement parks after the show. What options do I have for child care while I’m at the show?
Children 16 and younger are allowed to attend Natural Products Expo West, but they require a children’s badge and adult supervision. The cost for a badge is $25. If you need child care on-site, this is also available for $25 a day. To register, print badges or check children in to child care, go to the Hilton, Lower Level.
7.Registration and badge pickup lines have been difficult in the past. Will it be easier this year?
Yes! Lots of new registration areas have been added across the Expo West campus. Three examples are the Arena Box Office, the Hyatt Hotel and Angel Stadium. Additionally, keep an eye out for mobile registration carts. If badge pickup lines get busy, the mobile carts will roll that way to scan confirmation barcodes and print badges.

1.Dove sono tenuto ad esibire il badge all’interno di Natural Products Expo West?
Al fine di rendere scorrevole le entrate e le uscite dai padiglioni, per poter accedere all’Anaheim Convention Center dovrà presentare un badge e un documento identificativo, non richiesto invece all’interno del quartiere fieristico. Individui le apposite porte d’entrata. Espositori e possessori dei Super Pass avranno entrate separate. Avrà inoltre bisogno del badge per partecipare agli appuntamenti educativi e agli eventi in loco. Per sapere dove ritirare il badge ed effettuare la registrazione, consulti il sito Expo West.
2.Raggiungerò l’Anaheim Convention Center in macchina. Qual è il parcheggio migliore?
Il traffico sarà estremamente congestionato nei pressi del centro congressi, inoltre quest’anno la possibilità di parcheggio sarà limitata a causa della costruzione e dell’espansione delle attività interne al campus. Per evitare il caos, suggeriamo quindi di posteggiare l’auto gratuitamente al vicino Angel Stadium. Bus navetta gratuiti saranno disponibili durante il corso della giornata dallo stadio all’Anaheim Convention Center e viceversa. Per prendere il bus navetta dal Convention Center in direzione Angel Stadium, dovrà salire nei pressi di Katella Avenue (accanto all’Arena). Consiglio: eviti la fila per la registrazione stampando il suo badge all’Angel Stadium dopo aver parcheggiato.
3.Posso registrare ulteriori membri del team una volta giunto in Anaheim?
Si. Un servizio completo per la registrazione sarà disponibile presso l’Hilton mentre sarà possibile effettuare gli upgrades agli eventi educativi al Marriot. Sebbene tale servizio sia accessibile, gli organizzatori di Expo West raccomandano di procedere con le registrazioni dello staff prima dell’arrivo alla manifestazione in modo da risparmiare tempo ed evitare code. Il costo per un badge è di 25$. Se ha bisogno di assistenza infantile in loco, il servizio è disponibile ad un costo di 25$ al giorno. Per la registrazione, la stampa dei badge o l’assegnazione dei bambini ai servizi di assistenza infantile, è possibile recarsi al piano inferiore dell’Hilton.
7.In passato ci sono state difficoltà nelle file per registrare e ritirare i badge. Sarà più semplice quest’anno?
Si! Molte nuove aree adibite alla registrazione sono state aggiunte all’interno dell’Expo West campus. Tre esempi sono l’Arena Box Office, lo Hyatt Hotel e l’Angel Stadium. Invitiamo inoltre a tenere gli occhi aperti nell’individuare i chioschi mobili per le registrazioni. Se le file per il ritiro dei badge saranno affollate, i chioschi mobili si muoveranno verso quella direzione in modo da scannerizzare i codici a barre di conferma e procedere con la stampa.

Nepal is a place of overriding beauty and calm but, as with anywhere, dig a little deeper and the same question will arise: at what price? Responsible tourism issues in Nepal are driven by poverty, a lack of education, and simple inefficiency when it comes to infrastructure. Much to the annoyance of purists, there are new roads making inlays into the Annapurna circuit, yet concomitantly, the existing roads are in an appalling state. Similarly, the more us tourists want to experience rural Himalayan life, the more growing wood the locals will chop and burn to keep us warm and fed.
Nepal’s issues are clear-cut, but co-dependent and can therefore seem like vicious cycles – the hardest cycles to break. The rural Nepalese are a caring and spiritual people though who strive for positive changes, but who as yet lack enough understanding or support to implement them fully. Granted, tourism is not perfect and does cause damage, but there is real need for development especially in Nepal’s rural areas and responsible, well-managed tourism is still one of the most central ways of lifting rural Nepalese out of poverty.

PORTERS' RIGHTS
Trekking is an exercise in spiritual wellbeing – simply knowing that all you have to do each day is wander a majestic landscape eases away the worries of everyday life, and there’s something about the serenity of the mountains that lends a wonderful sense of perspective and calm. But there’s also your kit to consider; carry an extra 15kg around on your back for a bit and you’ll soon feel it, only you don’t have to because your local porters will be the ones carrying it for you. It's tempting to think of your porters or guides as heroic individuals who can trek Everest Base Camp carrying two packs, while wearing flip flops and an old jumper, with no discomfort. Whilst many porters and guides do indeed have incredible strength and stamina, is it fair or responsible for tourists and tour companies to employ often impoverished local people in this way?
Yes and no. On the one hand, local guides and porters’ knowledge of the mountains is invaluable and they are, in the main, kind and courteous travel companions who will be interested to know more about you, and to share their culture and experience with you. Most importantly, income from your trek will provide income for their extended families.
Having said that, Nepalese porters have been found to suffer four times as many accidents as trekkers, according to Tourism Concern, and reports of porters being forced to carry up to 40kg are not uncommon. Reports of porters being abandoned by tour groups when they fall ill are not unusual and porters have even been abandoned in life-threatening blizzards while trekkers were rescued by helicopter. This is simply not acceptable. It’s easy to forget how fortunate we are in the western world with sick pay and incapacity benefit to fall back on, but if an overloaded porter in Nepal strains his back or gets frostbite he cannot work and if he cannot work, his family cannot eat.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
All tourists have a responsibility to make absolutely sure that the porters and guides accompanying them on their trek are not being taken advantage of. Ask your tour company if they have policies on porters' rights and working conditions, ensure that your porters have proper clothing and footwear and consider the amount of weight you porters are carrying - 25kg is a reasonable, but probably maximum load per person – do you really need that extra change of clothes?
Ask about porters' insurance and the provisions that are made for them should they fall ill or be injured, ensure that porters’ sleeping arrangements are comfortable and fair, and always make sure that your porters and guides are paid fairly. Enquire about and agree rates BEFORE you set off to avoid uncomfortable conversations at the end of your trek.
If you see or experience something that you feel uncomfortable about then make it clear to your tour company that this is not acceptable. You might also like to report this to the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG) on your return. For more information on porters' rights, read its five guidelines for fair treatment.

Il Nepal è un luogo di preponderante calma e bellezza, ma come per ogni luogo, scavando poco più a fondo, sorgerà la stessa domanda: a quale prezzo? In Nepal i problemi relativi ad un turismo responsabile derivano da povertà, mancanza di educazione, e banale inefficienza a livello di infrastrutture. Con grande disapprovazione da parte dei puristi, sono sorte nuove vie che scavano il circuito dell’Annapurna, quando in contemporanea i percorsi già esistenti sono in pessimo stato. Allo stesso tempo, più noi turisti vorremo provare un’esperienza di vita rurale himalyana, più gli abitanti locali provvederanno a tagliare e bruciare legna per poterci nutrire e tenere al caldo.
I problemi del Nepal sono lampanti, ma interconnessi e di conseguenza assumono le sembianze di un circolo vizioso – il più arduo circolo da interrompere. I nepalesi delle zone rurali sono persone premurose e spirituali che, sebbene si impegnino affinché vi siano dei cambiamenti positivi, non hanno ancora abbastanza comprensione o supporto per poterli completamente implementare. Certamente, il turismo non è perfetto e causa danni, ma esiste un reale bisogno di sviluppo specialmente nelle zone rurali del Nepal e, un turismo responsabile e ben gestito, è attualmente uno dei modi principali per condurre i nepalesi fuori dallo stato di povertà.

I DIRITTI DEI PORTATORI
Il trekking è un esercizio di benessere spirituale dove sei semplicemente consapevole che tutto quello che devi fare ogni giorno è passeggiare immerso in un panorama mozzafiato lasciando che le preoccupazioni della vita quotidiana si affievoliscano e che c’è un qualcosa nella quiete della montagna capace di regalare nuovi punti di vista e un senso di tranquillità. Devi però tenere in considerazione il tuo equipaggiamento; portando in giro 15 kg sulla schiena presto inizieresti a sentirli, se non fosse che non ne sei obbligato, dal momento che un portatore locale potrà farlo al posto tuo. Potresti avere la tentazione di pensare al tuo portatore o guida come un eroe capace di scalare il campo base dell’Everest con a spalle 2 zaini, le infradito ai piedi e una vecchia felpa, senza che questi gli comporti alcun disagio. Sebbene molti portatori e guide siano effettivamente dotati di incredibile forza e resistenza, è corretto e responsabile secondo turisti e operatori turistici impiegare spesso bisognose persone locali in questa maniera?
Si e no. Da una parte, la conoscenza delle montagne di guide e portatori locali è inestimabile, oltretutto sono, nella maggior parte dei casi, compagni di viaggio gentili ed educati, interessati a sapere qualcosa in più di te e a condividere la loro cultura ed esperienza. Cosa più importante: il guadagno che ricaveranno dal trekking provvederà al mantenimento delle loro grandi famiglie.
Detto questo, secondo quanto riscontrato dal Tourism Concern, i portatori nepalesi sono vittima di incidenti quattro volte in più rispetto ai trekkers, e racconti di portatori obbligati a caricare 40 kg sulle spalle non sono inconsueti. Nemmeno i resoconti di portatori abbandonati da gruppi di turisti perché ammalatisi sono infrequenti; i portatori sono anche stati abbandonati in occasione di pericolose tormente mentre i trekkers venivano salvati dall’intervento degli elicotteri. Tutto questo è semplicemente inaccettabile. È facile dimenticare quanto siamo fortunati nel mondo occidentale dove possiamo contare su malattie retribuite e indennità, ma se un portatore nepalese sovraccaricato si strappa la schiena o subisce ferite causate dal freddo estremo, non può più lavorare e, se non può lavorare, la sua famiglia non può mangiare.
COSA PUOI FARE
Ogni turista ha la responsabilità di sapere con certezza che i portatori e le guide da cui vengono accompagnati durante il trekking non siano vittima di sfruttamento. Chiedi alla compagnia turistica se ha una politica sui diritti e sulle condizioni di lavoro dei portatori, assicurati che il tuo portatore indossi vestiti e calzature adeguati e tieni in considerazione i kg che porteranno sulle spalle – 25 kg è un peso ragionevole, ma probabilmente è il carico massimo per ogni persona – hai veramente bisogno di tutto quel cambio di vestiti?
Informati in merito all’assicurazione e alla fornitura prevista in caso il portatore dovesse ammalarsi o rimanere ferito, assicurati che l’attrezzatura per dormire sia confortevole e adeguata e accertati che i portatori e le guide vengano correttamente pagate. Richiedi informazioni e accorda le tariffe prima di metterti in viaggio in modo da evitare conversazioni spiacevoli alla fine del trekking.
Se vedi o fai diretta esperienza di una situazione che ritieni inadeguata, chiarisci alla compagnia turistica che queste condizioni sono inaccettabili.
