Source text - Portuguese O baixo sucesso em visualizar e capturar espécies evasivas representa um dos principais motivos da escassez de estudos básicos sobre esses animais na natureza. Isso resulta em um baixo conhecimento ecológico, o que prejudica o desenvolvimento de programas de manejo e conservação. Assim, testar a viabilidade de ferramentas de pesquisas alternativas em locais onde a captura e o monitoramento de espécimes representam as principais dificuldades se faz essencial para seu uso e confiabilidade em pesquisas futuras. Armadilhas fotográficas (AF) são uma ferramenta que tem sido cada vez mais utilizada como alternativa em estudos com animais selvagens, gerando dados importantes para o manejo e conservação de muitas espécies. Utilizando o veado-catingueiro (Mazama gouazoubira) no Pantanal brasileiro como modelo, este estudo avaliou a possibilidade de individualizar animais por meio de marcações naturais na natureza e testou a viabilidade das AF para a determinação da área de vida, uso de hábitat e período de atividade em comparação com informações obtidas de animais monitorados com colares de GPS. Registros fotográficos de quatro indivíduos com marcações naturais foram observados (n=21) e a comparação entre as duas ferramentas mostrou uma subestimação das áreas de vida obtidas com AF de até 30%.
Translation - English The difficulty in observing and capturing evasive species in the wild is one of the main reasons for lacking fundamental studies of such species. This results in low ecological knowledge and impacts the development of conservation and management plans. Hence, testing the feasibility of new alternative research tools is essential for its future use and reliability, especially in areas where the capturing and monitoring are at the highest level of difficulty. Camera traps (CT) are being increasingly used as an alternative tool in wildlife researches, already generating important data for conservation and management of many species. Using the brown brocket deer (Mazama gouazoubira) from the Brazilian Pantanal as a model, we evaluated the possibility of individualizing free-ranging animals by natural markings. We also tested the CT's feasibility for home range, habitat use and activity period studies, in comparison with data collected from GPS collar at the same time. Twenty one photo records of four individuals with natural markings were taken and the two tools comparison showed a home range underestimation by CT of up to 30%.
