Bio
Objective:
Apply my interpersonal skills and experience with languages to a career in translation, thereby enhancing my skills and contributing to better communication among members of various cultures and languages. A translation should always be authentic and true to the source, but also flow so that it sounds natural to a native speaker's ear. That is what I aim for.
Backround:
My father is Canadian and my mother is Italian, so I was raised listening to and speaking both English and Italian. I was born in Italy and I lived there for the first 17 years of my life. In high school I went to a liceo linguistico, which is where my passion for languages really began. When I was 17 years old, my family and I moved to Tenerife (Spain). I finished my high school there and I studied Aviation. In the meantime I was also translating rental contracts from Spanish to Italian and from Spanish to English. After 9 years in Spain, I decided to join my brother in London, England for one year. At the age of 26, I fulfilled my dream of going to Canada, meeting my whole family, and discovering my origins. I lived there for 4 years. Now, at the age of 31, I moved back to Spain and I decided to become a freelancer and apply the knowledge that I acquired to translations. I think that to be able to speak or understand a language you have to become part of that culture and its mentality. You have to think like one of the native speakers, integrate yourself into their world, and basically become one of them. That is what I did for the last 14 years, and what makes me a successful translator.
