Source text - French Belo Horizonte est la capitale de l’État brésilien du Minas Gerais. Fondée en 1897, la ville fut planifiée selon une conception hygiéniste de l’espace qui fit la part belle à la circulation et aux places situées au croisement des artères principales. Parmi celles-ci, la Praça da Estação, ou place de la gare, a un statut particulier : elle se situe au centre du quartier historique de la ville, tous les matériaux de construction étant arrivés par le chemin de fer jusqu’à la gare de Belo Horizonte. La place est par ailleurs depuis longtemps un espace public important : en partie occupée par un parking entre 1980 et 2004, elle est toujours restée un lieu de rencontres et même de rassemblements de toutes sortes. Le quartier de la gare est quant à lui un quartier populaire où convergent tous les moyens de transport collectif : les bus municipaux et métropolitains, le métro et même le train – même s’il n’offre plus aux voyageurs qu’une seule destination depuis Belo Horizonte. Fréquenté en journée par une population mélangée d’usagers des transports, de petits commerçants et de sans abris (Bosredon and Dumas, 2013), le quartier n’a jamais été déserté (au contraire de nombreux centres anciens de villes brésiliennes), mais s’est tout de même dégradé et ne faisait pas partie des priorités municipales jusqu’au milieu des années 1990 (Trevisan, 2012).
La place de la gare est pourtant devenue depuis le début des années 2000 l’objet d’une réflexion de la Municipalité qui souhaite revaloriser son quartier de gare historique, en particulier le patrimoine bâti qui le caractérise, et le convertir en un quartier culturel vivant susceptible d’incarner le rayonnement de Belo Horizonte. En 2009, alors que le processus de régénération du quartier est en cours, les intérêts de la mairie rencontrent ceux du musée privé des Arts et Métiers qui a obtenu dès 2001 la concession du bâtiment classé de l’ancienne gare centrale : le maire décide par décret d’interdire les rassemblements qui se tenaient régulièrement sur la place. De cette décision découle l’organisation de la Praia da Estação, ou « plage de la gare », un mouvement de contestation original dans sa forme (des plages sont organisées sur la place) et dont la revendication principale porte sur l’accès libre et total à l’espace public pour tous, ainsi que sur la participation de tous à la vie de la cité et à la fabrique de la ville. Le droit à la ville est ainsi sous-jacent dans le discours et les actions de la Praia da Estação. Aujourd’hui, un certain nombre de ces activistes participent aux réunions publiques organisées par la municipalité et ont intégré des structures ouvertes au débat public, comme le Conseil Municipal de la Culture qui est une structure collégiale et consultative constituée pour moitié de membres élus issus de la société civile et pour moitié de membres désignés par le pouvoir exécutif municipal.
Translation - English Belo Horizonte is the capital of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Founded in 1897, the city was founded upon a hygienist concept of space, which privileged ease of traffic and inserted squares at the crossing of major axes. Among these, Praça da Estação, or Railway Station Square, has a certain importance: it sits in the center of the city’s historic neigborhood, as all building materials were delivered by train to Belo Horizonte’s station. The square has also long been a notable public place: partially occupied by a parking lot between 1980 and 2004, it was always a place for convivial meet-ups as well as for gatherings of all kinds. The neighborhood surrounding the station, for its part, is a working-class neighborhood, where all forms of public transport converge: the city and regional buses, the subway, and even the train – even if today it only offers one destination for travelers from Belo Horizonte. During the day frequented by a mixed population of transport users, small business owners and clerks, and the homeless (Bosredon, Dumas, 2013), the neighborhood has never been abandoned (contrary to numerous Brazilian historic city centers), but has degraded all the same, and was not a municipal priority until the mid-1990’s (Trevisan, 2012).
However, since the beginning of the 2000’s, the municipality has turned its thoughts to Railway Station Square, wishing to revitalize the historic train station neighborhood, in particular its characteristic architectural heritage, converting it into a lively cultural neighborhood with potential to represent Belo Horizonate as a place of influence. In 2009, as the revitalization of the neighborhood was in progress, the interests of the city coincided with those of the privately-owned Museum of Arts and Crafts to which the historic building of the former central station was given in 2001: the mayor decided to ban by decree the gatherings regularly held on the square. This decision prompted the organization of Praia da Estação, literally “Railway Station Beach,” a protest movement taking an original form (beaches set up on the square) and whose principal demand was free and complete access to public space for all, as well as the participation of all in the life and development of the city. The agency of urban citizens in their environment thus underlies this discourse and the activity of Praia da Estação. Today, a certain number of activists participate in public meetings held by the city and are involved in organizations open to public debate, such as the Municipal Cultural Council, a collective and consultative body whose members are elected half from the greater public, half appointed by the executive municipal power.

Bio
The French language is my passion, and I've dedicated seven years to living in France and becoming bilingual. During my Master's studies in France, I strove to perfect my language skills and succeeded in earning the highest French language certification offered by the French government, the DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de la Langue Française/Advanced French Language Diploma) at a C2 level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Additionally, I've proven that I have a high level of skill for translation throughout the course of employment in a French university - I was the reference person for any French-English translations needed by the university, and I have also worked independently with other companies since 2013.
A member of the American Translators Association, I have recently sat their certification exam; the results should be available by January 2016.
My preferred language projects have been the translation of social science research and articles in cultural sociology from French to English.
For those who need translation and localization of websites, I have experience translating websites and entering the translation directly into the backend of the organization's CMS for approval and publication.
