Source text - English South Korea’s Hyundai Steel Co has secured two ferrous scrap cargoes anew from the USA at around US$253/
MT C&F each for No1 HMS under negotiated deals with Australia-based Sims Metal Management Ltd and US supplier
Schnitzer Steel Industries Inc, Hyundai Steel’s procurement of deepsea bulk cargoes as import ferrous scrap for the first
time in nearly one and a half months.
The negotiated price indicates a rebound of US$4 from what Hyundai Steel settled in its previous purchases. The
Korean buyer is expected to take delivery of each cargo from Sims and Schnitzer between late May and early June for
the total quantity of around 80,000 tons.
For delivery in South Korea, the price of US$253/MT C&F for No1 HMS from the USA translates into US$213/
MT FOB for No2 HMS from Japan considering the No1 HMS/No2 HMS quality differential at US$15/MT and the ocean
freight rate at US$25/MT on the Japan-South Korea route, market sources estimate. Then, the price of US$213/MT
FOB for Japanese No2 HMS translates into nearly Y25,500/MT FOB at a March 25 exchange rate of US$1.00-Y119.60.
Hyundai Steel is thought to have conceded at the final stage in its price negotiations with Sims and Schnitzer this
time. In the background, the momentum for a recovery has heightened in the ferrous scrap import market in East Asia,
stimulated by a rebound in negotiated prices of ferrous scrap imports into Turkey from the USA. Besides, negotiated
prices of containerized HMS imports into Taiwan have already moved up to US$232-233/MT C&F for a mix of 80%
No1 HMS/20% No2 HMS, a rebound of a little over US$10 from their latest low.
But the price increase stands at US$4/MT in Hyundai Steel’s new negotiated purchases of deepsea bulk cargoes
as compared with the current upswing in containerized HMS prices for delivery in Taiwan.
Meanwhile, offer prices of No2 HMS exports from Japan have advanced to Y25,000/MT FOB or over and No2
HMS prices have moved up to Y24,500/MT FOB or beyond until now in new deals for Japan’s ferrous scrap exports to
South Korea.
