Source text - English The city was silently bloating in the hot sun, rotting like the thousands of bodies that lay where they had fallen in the street battles. An oppressive, hot wind blew from the southeast, carrying with it the putrefying stench of decay. And outside the city walls, Death itself waited in the persons of Titus, the son of Vespasian, and sixty thousand legionnaires who were anxious to gut the city of God.
Even before the Romans crossed the Valley of Thorns and camped on the Mount of Olives, warring factions within Jerusalem's city walls had prepared the way for her destruction.
Jewish robbers, who now fled like rats before the Roman legions, had recently fallen upon Jerusalem and murdered her prominent citizens, taking over the holy temple. Casting lots for the priesthood, they turned a house of prayer into a marketplace of tyranny.
Fast behind the robbers came rebels and zealots. Directed by rival leaders - John, Simon, and Eleazar - the warring factions raged within the three walls. Swollen with power and pride, they sliced Jerusalem into bloody pieces.
Breaking the Sabbath and the laws of God, Eleazar stormed Antonia Tower and murdered the Roman soldiers within it. Zealots rampaged, murdering thousands more who attempted to bring order back to a maddened city. Unlawful tribunals were set up and the laws of man and God mocked as hundreds of innocent men and women were murdered. Houses full of corn were burned in the chaos. Famine soon followed.
In their despair, righteous Jews prayed fervently for Rome to come against the great city. For these Jews believed that then, and only then, would the factions within Jerusalem unite in one cause: freedom against Rome.
Rome did come and, their hated ensigns held high, their war cry rang across all of Judea. They took Gadara, Jotapata, Beer-sheba, Jericho, Caesarea. The mighty legions marched in the very footsteps of devout pilgrims who came from every corner of the Jewish nation to worship and celebrate the high holy days of the Feast of Unleavened Bread - the Passover. Innocent tens of thousands poured into the city and found themselves in the midst of civil war. Zealots closed the gates, trapping them inside. Rome came on until the sound of destruction echoed across the Valley of Kidron against the walls of Jerusalem itself. Titus laid siege to the ancient, holy city, determined to end Jewish rebellion once and forever.
Josephus, the Jewish general of fallen Jotapata who had been taken captive by the Romans, wept and cried out from atop the first wall defeated by the legionnaires. With Titus' permission, he pleaded with his people to repent, warning them that God was against them, that the prophecies of destruction were about to be fulfilled. Those few who listened to him and managed to evade the zealots in their escape reached the greedy Syrians - who dissected them for the gold pieces they had supposedly swallowed before deserting the city. Those who didn't heed Josephus suffered the full fury of the Roman war machine. Having cut down every tree within miles, Titus built siege engines that hurled countless javelins, stones, even captives into the city.
From the Upper Market Place to the lower Acra and the Valley of Cheesemongers between, the city writhed in revolt.
Inside the great temple of God, the rebel leader John melted down the sacred golden vessels for himself. The righteous wept for Jerusalem, the bride of kings, the mother of prophets, the home of the shepherd king David. Torn asunder by her own people, she lay gutted and helpless, awaiting her death blow from hated Gentile foreigners.
Anarchy destroyed Zion, and Rome stood ready to destroy anarchy... anytime... anywhere.
Translation - Italian La città si stava silenziosamente dilatando sotto il sole cocente in un lento processo di decomposizione - proprio come le migliaia di corpi distesi lungo le sue strade, cadute nel corso di qualche scontro avvenuto all’interno delle mura. Un vento caldo e opprimente spirava da sudest, portando con sé l’olezzo imputridito della carne in putrefazione. E fuori dalle mura della città la Morte stessa era in attesa: aveva le sembianze di Tito, figlio di Vespasiano, e di sessantamila legionari smaniosi di sventrare la città di Dio.
Ancora prima che i romani attraversassero la Valle delle Spine e si accampassero sul Monte degli Ulivi, alcune fazioni in lotta tra di loro all’interno di Gerusalemme avevano preparato la strada per la sua distruzione.
Alcuni ladroni giudei, che adesso fuggivano come topi davanti alle legioni romane, poco tempo addietro si erano avventati su Gerusalemme impossessandosi del sacro tempio e assassinando i cittadini più eminenti della città. Avevano tirato a sorte per la nomina dei sacerdoti, trasformando così una casa di preghiera in un mercato della tirannide. A ruota, dietro i ladroni, erano arrivati gruppi di ribelli e di zeloti. Guidati da leader rivali tra di loro - Yohannan, Simone ed Eleazar - le fazioni contendenti avevano ingaggiato violenti combattimenti all’interno delle mura. Esaltati dal potere e dall’orgoglio, avevano ridotto Gerusalemme in tanti brandelli sanguinolenti.
Infrangendo lo Shabat e le leggi di Dio, Eleazar aveva preso d’assalto la Torre Antonia, uccidendo i soldati romani che vi si erano insediati. Gli zeloti avevano scatenato una violenza sfrenata, uccidendo altre migliaia di persone che avevano tentato di riportare l’ordine in una città impazzita. Erano stati istituiti dei tribunali illegittimi che si facevano beffe delle leggi sia degli uomini che di Dio, mentre centinaia di uomini e donne innocenti venivano massacrati. I magazzini di granoturco erano stati dati alle fiamme in mezzo a tutto quel caos, e presto era sopraggiunta la carestia.
In preda alla disperazione, i giusti tra i giudei sopravvissuti avevano pregato con fervore per l’intervento di Roma contro la grandiosa città: costoro credevano infatti che solo allora le fazioni all’interno di Gerusalemme si sarebbero unite in un’unica causa - quella della libertà da Roma.
I romani erano arrivati e, tenendo alti i loro odiati stendardi, avevano fatto risuonare il loro grido di guerra per tutta la Giudea. Avevano preso le città di Gadara, Tel Yodfat, Be’er Sheva, Gerico e Cesarea. Le potenti legioni avevano marciato lungo lo stesso percorso dei pellegrini devoti che erano arrivati da ogni parte della nazione ebraica per adorare e celebrare le solenni festività della Festa degli Azzimi - la Pasqua. Decine di migliaia di innocenti si erano riversati a Gerusalemme per poi ritrovarsi nel bel mezzo di una guerra civile. Gli zeloti avevano chiuso le porte della città, intrappolandoli al suo interno. Roma aveva continuato ad avanzare fino a quando il fragore della distruzione non aveva riecheggiato attraverso la Valle di Kidron fino alle mura stesse di Gerusalemme. Tito aveva posto l’assedio all’antica città santa, determinato a porre fine una volta per tutte alla ribellione giudaica.

Tito, dopo aver abbattuto ogni albero nel raggio di vari chilometri, aveva costruito delle catapulte che avevano scagliato un numero infinito di lance, di pietre e persino di prigionieri all’interno della città.
Dalla zona del Mercato Superiore a quella più in basso di Acra alla Valle dei Pastori nel mezzo, la città era nel pieno fermento della rivolta.
All’interno del grandioso tempio di Dio il leader dei ribelli, Yohannan, aveva fuso il vasellame sacro d’oro per i suoi scopi. I giusti avevano pianto per Gerusalemme - la sposa dei re, la madre dei profeti, la casa del re-pastore Davide. Divisa in due dal suo stesso popolo, giaceva squarciata ed impotente in attesa del colpo mortale che le avrebbero inferto gli odiati Gentili venuti da lontano.
L’anarchia aveva distrutto Sion, e Roma si ergeva pronta ad annientare l’anarchia… in qualunque momento… ovunque.

Source text - English Alexander Democedes Amandinus stood at the Door of Death waiting for the chance to learn more about life. Never having enjoyed the games, he had come reluctantly. Yet now he was transfixed by what he was witnessing, amazed into his very marrow. He stared at the fallen girl and felt an inexplicable triumph.
The mad intensity of the mob had always filled him with an unrest. His father had said some found release in watching violence done to others, and Alexander thought of this when he had seen, on occasion, an almost sick relief in faces among the crowd. In Rome. In Corinth. Here, in Ephesus. Perhaps those who beheld the horrors were thankful to the gods that it was not they who faced the lions or a trained gladiator or some other more grotesque and obscene manner of death.
It was as though thousands came to find a catharsis in the bloodletting, that this embracing of planned mayhem protected each of them from the growing chaos of an increasingly corrupt and arbitrary world. No one seemed to notice the stench of blood was no less strong than the stench of lust and fear permeating the very air they breathed.
Amandinus' hands gripped the iron bars as he looked out upon the sand where the young woman now lay. She had come out from among the other victims - those who walked to their deaths - calm and strangely joyful. He could not look away from her, for he had seen something extraordinary, something that defied description. She had sung and, for the briefest moment, her sweet voice had drifted on the air.
The mob had overwhelmed that sweet sound, rising en masse as she had continued forward, walking across the sand serenely, straight toward Alexander. His heart had pounded harder with each step she took. She had been rather plain in appearance, and yet there had been a radiance about her, an aura of light surrounding her. Or had it just been his imagination? When the lioness had hit her, Alexander had felt the blow himself.
Now two lions fought over her body. He winced as one beast sank its fangs deeply into her thigh and began to drag her away. The other lioness sprang, and the two rolled and clawed at one another.
A little girl in a ragged, soiled tunic ran screaming past the iron-gridded gate. Alexander gritted his teeth, trying to harden himself against the sound of those terrified cries. In trying to protect the girl, the child's mother was taken down by a jewel-collared lioness. Alexander's hand whitened on the iron-grated door as another lioness raced after the child. Run, girl. Run!
The sight of so much suffering and death assaulted and nauseated him. He pressed his forehead against the bars, his heart pounding.
He had heard all the arguments in favor of the games. The people sent to the arena were criminals, deserving of death. Those now before him belonged to a religion that encouraged the overthrow of Rome. Yet he couldn't help but wonder if a society that murdered helpless children did not deserve to be undone.
The screams of the childe sent a chill through Alexander's body. He was almost grateful when the lioness' jaws closed upon that small throat, extinguishing the sound. He let out his breath, hardly aware he had been holding it, and heard the guard behind him laugh harshly.

Si era recato all’arena con una certa riluttanza, dal momento che non aveva mai goduto nell’assistere allo spettacolo dei giochi, eppure in quel momento era rimasto ammaliato dall’evento a cui aveva appena assistito, e lo stupore gli era penetrato fino al midollo. Fissava la ragazza caduta a terra e provò un’inspiegabile sensazione di trionfo.
Il delirante fervore della folla l’aveva sempre colmato di una certa inquietudine. Suo padre gli aveva detto una volta che alcuni provavano un senso di liberazione nel guardare l’uso della violenza nei confronti di altri, e Alessandro aveva pensato a queste sue parole quando, occasionalmente, aveva scorto un’espressione di disgustato sollievo sui volti delle persone sparse tra la folla. A Roma. A Corinto. Qui ad Efeso. Probabilmente coloro che assistevano a simili orrori erano grati agli dèi di non essere loro a dover affrontare i leoni o qualche gladiatore ben addestrato o qualche altra maniera di morire persino più grottesca e mostruosa.
Era come se migliaia di persone venissero a cercare una catarsi in quei bagni di sangue, quasi che l’accettazione di tale programmata carneficina potesse proteggere ognuna di loro dal crescente caos di un mondo sempre più arbitrario e corrotto. Nessuno sembrava avvedersi che il lezzo del sangue non era meno pungente di quello della lussuria e del terrore che impregnavano l’aria stessa che respiravano.
Le mani di Amandino stringevano le sbarre di ferro, mentre il suo sguardo era posato sulla sabbia dell’arena, dove adesso era distesa la giovane donna. Era uscita dal gruppo delle altre vittime - coloro che si dirigevano camminando verso la propria morte - mostrandosi calma e stranamente gioiosa. Non era riuscito a distogliere lo sguardo da lei, perché aveva visto qualcosa di straordinario in quella giovane, qualcosa che era impossibile descrivere. Si era messa a cantare e, per un brevissimo istante, la sua dolce voce si era diffusa nell’aria.
La folla aveva sopraffatto quel dolce suono, alzandosi in massa mentre lei aveva continuato ad avanzare, camminando sulla sabbia dell’arena con aria serena, dirigendosi verso Alessandro. Il battito del suo cuore aveva accelerato ad ogni passo della ragazza. Nell’aspetto sembrava piuttosto semplice, eppure c’era in lei una radiosità, un’aura di luce che la circondava. O quella era stata solo la sua immaginazione? Quando la leonessa l’aveva colpita, Alessandro aveva accusato il colpo fisicamente.
Adesso c’erano due leonesse che si contendevano il suo corpo. Alessandro trasalì quando una delle belve affondò le sue zanne nel fianco della giovane e cominciò a trascinarla via. L’altra leonessa spiccò un balzo e le due rotolarono e si ghermirono a vicenda con gli artigli.
Una bambina che indossava una tunica sudicia e lacera, corse gridando passando oltre il cancello con le grate di ferro. Alessandro strinse i denti, cercando di desensibilizzarsi al suono di quelle urla di terrore. Nel tentativo di proteggere la bambina, la madre venne abbattuta da una leonessa che indossava un collare tempestato di pietre preziose. Le mani di Alessandro si fecero bianche nello stringere le grate di ferro del cancello, mentre un’altra leonessa correva dietro alla bambina. Corri, ragazzina. Scappa!
La vista di così tanta sofferenza e morte lo assalì, facendogli venire la nausea. Premette la fronte contro le sbarre, mentre il cuore gli batteva forte.
Aveva sentito tutte le argomentazioni a favore dei giochi. La gente che veniva mandata nell’arena non era altro che feccia criminale che meritava la morte. Quelli che adesso aveva di fronte appartenevano ad una religione che incoraggiava il sovvertimento dell’impero di Roma, eppure lui non poteva fare a meno di chiedersi se una società che mandava al massacro dei bambini inermi non meritasse davvero di venire disfatta.
Le grida della bambina raggelarono Alessandro. Provò quasi un senso di gratitudine quando le fauci della leonessa si richiusero su quella piccola gola, spegnendone il suono. Espirò senza nemmeno rendersi conto di aver tenuto il fiato sospeso fino a quel momento, e sentì la guardia alle sue spalle sghignazzare crudelmente.
