Health Promotion
Health promotion is the process of enabling people to improve their health, by increasing their control over their health and the determinants of good health. It's essentially the effort to prevent disease and injury from occurring in the first place, as opposed to traditional health services, which treat disease and injury once it has occurred.
Unlike the traditional clinical care provided by health services, health promotion focuses on populations (or communities), as opposed to individuals. Often, health promotion requires the health system to work with non-health sectors, such as schools, child care, workplaces, local government, as they have a powerful influence over health.
In NSW, the State Plan articulates some of the key priorities for health promotion, this being improved health through reduced obesity, smoking, illicit drug use and risk drinking. The following targets have been set for these priorities:
• Continue to reduce smoking rates by 1% per annum to 2010, then by 0.5% per annum to 2016.
• Reduce total risk (binge) drinking to below 25% by 2012
• Hold the proportion of people using illicit drugs to below 15%
• Stop the growth in childhood obesity by holding childhood obesity at the 2004 level of 25% by 2010. Then reduce levels to 22% by 2016.
At NSW Health, the Centre for Health Advancement within the Population Health Division, leads the health promotion activities to address smoking, overweight and obesity, and falls prevention in the elderly. From time to time the Centre also works on emerging issues, such as diabetes prevention, sun protection, and child injury.

التوعية الصحية
تقوم التوعية الصحية على تمكين الناس من تحسين صحتهم عبر زيادة قدرتهم على التحكم فيها وفي العوامل المحدّدة للصحّة الجيّدة بشكل عام. وتقوم ايضاً على تعزيز جهود الناس لتجنّب الإصابة بالأمراض وتفادي التعرّض للإصابات، بعكس الخدمات الصحّية التقليدية التي تعالج الأمراض والإصابات بعد حدوثها.
وخلافاً للعناية السريرية التقليدية التي توفّرها الخدمات الصحية، تركّز التوعية الصحية على السكان بشكل عام أو المجتمع وليس على الصعيد الفرديّ. وغالباً ما تحتاج هذه التوعيّة الى نظام صحي للعمل مع القطاعات الغير معنيّة بالصحة مثل المدارس ومراكز الحضانة وأماكن العمل والحكومات المحليّة لأنّ هذه القطاعات لها تأثير قوي على الصحة.
ويوضّح مخطّط ولاية نيو ساوث ويلز بعض النقاط الأولوية التي ترتكز عليها التوعية الصحية والتي تقوم على تحسين الصحة من خلال تخفيض نسبة البدانة والتدخين وتعاطي المخدرات الممنوعة والإفراط بشرب الكحول.
وقد تمّ تحديد أهداف كل من هذه الأوليات والتي هي كالآتي:
٠١ الاستمرار بتخفيض نسبة التدخين بمعدل %1 بالسنة مع حلول عام 2010 ومن ثمّ تخفيضها بمعدل %0.5 مع حلول عام 2016.
٠٢ تخفيض نسبة الإفراط في شرب الكحول الى ما يزيد عن %25 مع حلول عام 2012
٠٣ دحر نسبة المتعاطين للمخدرات الى ما لا يزيد عن %15.
٠٤ إيقاف ارتفاع نسبة البدانة عند الأطفال وإبقائها عند المستوى الذي سُجّل عام 2004 أي %25 مع حلول عام 2010 ومن ثمّ تخفيض هذه النسبة الى %22 مع حلول عام 2016.
ويقود مركز تحسين الصحّة التابع لقسم صحة المجتمع في دائرة الصحة التابعة لنيو ساوث ويلز، يقود نشاطات للتوعية الصحية والتي تتناول قضايا التدخين والسمنة المفرطة والبدانة وتفادي الوقوع أرضاً عند المسنين. ويعمل هذا المركز من وقتٍ الى آخر على قضايا مستجدّة مثل تفادي الإصابة بمرض السكّري والحماية من أشعة الشمس واصابات الأطفال.
