The Unique Origin Story of the Hairless Sphynx Cat
The Sphynx cat breed originates from Canada in the 1960s. Breeders were attempting to develop a hairless cat breed through selective breeding of hairless cats that occasionally appeared in domestic cat populations.
The first known hairless cat was discovered in Mexico in 1902. However, breeders had trouble establishing a hairless breed from this line. In 1966, breeders in Toronto acquired hairless kittens that were descendants of the Mexican hairless cats. They bred these kittens with Canadian domestic shorthair cats to develop the Sphynx breed.
After several years of breeding and outcrossing with Rex cats, the Sphynx became a recognized breed. The Canadian Cat Association first accepted the Sphynx as a registered breed in 1978..
