Spanish to English: ASEAN: A New Frontier for Chile in Southeast Asia Detailed field: Government / Politics

A New Frontier for Chile in Asia
PROLOGUE
Chile has been successful in pursuing a place in the Asian Pacific marketplace through its persistence. Having joined the APEC in 1994 was a real milestone, followed by the signing of free trade agreements with South Korea in 2004, with China in 2006 and Japan in 2007. Our strong ties with China, Japan and South Korea of today are self-evident; their presence in the region is undeniable. There is no lack of good relations with those countries, as diplomatic and political ties have been established over time making them our biggest trading partners in the area.
Chile is developing an active role in Southeast Asia thanks to its geopolitical and economic success worldwide. Nevertheless, for most Chileans those countries appear to be distant and exotic lands difficult to distinguish from one another.
The publication of ASEAN a New Frontier for Chile in Asia, by the Chilean Library of Congress could not have come at a better time. We need to have our own perspective on this region, which takes into account Chileans’ experience in the area.
We believe that it is important to be aware of the main milestones for Chile with respect to its ties to countries in the region and ASEAN itself, which have been developed by both the executive and legislative branches of the Chilean government.
In fact, the Library of Congress has also contributed through its participation in the annual meeting of the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) held in Singapore in 2013 and cooperation with the library and legislative branch of the Myanmar government during the creation of its digital repository.
The purpose of ASEAN a New Frontier for Chile in Asia is to be a true guide for understanding the region and doing business there, as well as exploring new prospects. These are the same criteria which have guided the Asian Pacific Series, which the Chilean Library of Congress began in 2009 with the title Chile’s Path to the Land of the Rising Sun, which has to do with relations between Japan and Chile. In 2010 From the Andes Mountain Range to the Great Wall was published, which took a look at ties between Chile and China. A translation of this book in Chinese was released in 2011 in Beijing. Afterwards this series featured the title A Shared Desire for Development in 2012 with which the Congress commemorated 50 years of ties between South Korea and Chile.

Dos cuerpos frente a frente
son a veces dos olas
y la noche es océano.
Dos cuerpos frente a frente
son a veces dos piedras
y la noche desierto.
Dos cuerpos frente a frente
son a veces raíces
en la noche enlazadas.
Dos cuerpos frente a frente
son a veces navajas
y la noche relámpago.
Dos cuerpos frente a frente
son dos astros que caen
en un cielo vacío. -Octavio Paz

Two bodies face to face
Are at times two waves
And the night is ocean.
Two bodies face to face
Are at times two stones
And the night desert.
Two bodies face to face
Are at times roots
Laced into night.
Two bodies face to face
Are at times knives
And the night lightning.
Two bodies face to face
Are two stars falling
In an empty sky.

Translation - English Why reflect upon designer fashion and blogs?
In a country where turning reality into tabloid news is a daily event it may not make too much sense to reflect upon blogs and designer fashion. The “common thing” to do would be to consider fashion a frivolous and extravagant activity and blogs as a tool used for the glorification of the ego, than a contribution to the industry. Now I hope that we can demystify these assumptions.
Fashion as identity
My interest in fashion did not come from my need to clothe myself, but from my desire to create narratives that express myself through my wardrobe. On this path I came across designer fashion from Chile and later Latin America -and came to understand that not only were individual stories woven into these clothes, but those of groups and nations, that needed to be communicated to society. At that time -2007- online pages that talked about fashion on a deeper level did not exist, for that reason I decided to create my blog, motivated by the idea of making my blog into a platform, rather than just a site to promote and spread the word about designers and brands.
