Source text - German Neue Temperatur-Perspektiven für Spezialanwendungen eröffnen die programmierbaren Heizprofile der neuen „Farinograph“-Software. So ist es mit der von Brabender entwickelten Methode für die vierte Generation von „Farinographen“ möglich, Teige beispielsweise nach einer vorgegebenen Knetzeit von 30° auf bis zu 99 °C aufzuheizen. Bei Bedarf können sogar Versuche von minus 5° bis ca. 150 °C gefahren werden, was be-
sonders mit Blick auf Teiglingstechnologien mit Gärzeitunterbrechung in der Kühlung von praktischem Interesse ist.
Die Drehzahl für die Teigknetung ist jetzt stufenlos von 0–200 Rotationen der Knetschaufeln pro Minute einstellbar. Damit wird das Anwendungsspektrum für verschiedenartige Backwaren erweitert, wozu gleichzeitig auch das maximale Dreh-
moment auf jetzt bis zu 20 Newtonmeter verdoppelt wurde. Ein wesentliches Feature der „Advanced Technology“ ist die Messung des Energieeintrags bei der Knetung einer Mehlprobe. Über die standardmäßig erfasste „Farinograph“-Qualitätszahl
(FQZ) wird zudem die Beziehung zwischen Teigentwicklungszeit und Teigerweichung im Zeitverlauf als Kurve erfasst. Hier liegen große Potenziale zur Optimierung von Produktionsprozessen in den Backbetrieben.
Kneten mit AT: Vier Merkmale der neuen Software
Die erweiterte Anwendungssoftware der AT-Generation des „Farinographen“ bietet wesentliche Neuerungen. Mit ihnen kommt man dem Ziel einer jeden mehlanalytischen Untersuchung, nämlich der praxisnahen Abbildung von teigrheologischen Prozessen, im Knetbereich um vier Quantensprünge näher:
– Kneten auf „Plateaus“: Spiegelung von Produktion und Labor
Die produktionstechnischen Profile der anschließbaren Knetsysteme sind differenziert programmierbar. Sowohl die Geschwindigkeiten als auch die Knetzeiten sind auf rampenartigen „Plateaus“ der Monitorkurven so einstellbar, dass diese die Realität einer Knetmaschine oder eines Produktionsmixers entsprechend imitieren. So ist das Verhalten von Teigen oder Massen deckungsgleich zwischen Labor und Produktion abzubilden. Das kann in der Qualitätssicherung eines großen Backbetriebs so weit gehen, dass beispielsweise Teigkneter verschiedener Produktionslinien jeweils mit einem „Farinographen“ als „Messkneter“ im Labor gespiegelt und die Produktion optimiert werden kann.
– Kneten für „die Knete“: Energieeintrag als Stellgröße
Die Messung des Energieeintrags unter Vorgabe einer definierten mechanischen Beanspruchung eröffnet ökonomisch interessante Perspektiven: Wasserschüttung und Teigausbeute können rohstoffgerecht und maschinenspezifisch optimiert werden. Als qualitätssichernde Maßnahme können die Backmeister ihre Linien so steuern, dass sich die Teignetzwerke optimal ausbilden – Chargenfehler durch Unter- oder Überknetung werden verhindert. Bei Zutaten wie Emulgatoren, Fetten oder Gluten sind durch ideale Dosierungen erhebliche Einsparpotenziale realisierbar, z. B. bei der Croissant- oder Toastbrotproduktion. Das nützt nicht nur der Qualitätssicherung, sondern erhöht auch die Handling-Sicherheit bei Backmischungen, insbesondere bei der temperaturabhängigen Emulgatoreneffizienz.
– Kneten „mit Planet“: Komplexe Produkte im Griff
In Verbindung mit dem Planetenmischer P 600 als Knetwerkzeug sind noch weitergehende Anwendungen mit „schwierigen“, komplexeren Produkten im Bereich der Feinen Backwaren möglich, wie z. B. für Biskuitmassen, Ei-Schaum oder sogar bei der Sahnesteif-Dosierung. Diese Systemkombination ist das erste System weltweit, welches online Konsistenzmessungen an Massen für Feine Backwaren ermöglicht. Angetrieben durch den „Farinograph-AT“, wird ein dem Produkt entsprechender Versuchsablauf gefahren, der vorher vom Anwender in der Brabender-Software programmiert wurde. Die Temperierung des Mischbottichs garantiert praxisgerechte und reproduzierbare Temperaturen der hergestellten Massen. Durch die Online-Messung wird z. B. der Einfluss verschiedener zugegebener Enzyme exakt an der Stelle im Zeitverlauf sichtbar, wo die Wirkung während des Laborversuches einsetzt. Dadurch lassen sich Rückschlüsse auf den optimalen Einsatz dieser Zusatzstoffe während des Produktionsprozesses erzielen.
– Kneten „mit Pausen“: Optimierung von Langzeitführungen
Ein Zusatzmodul der Software zum „Farinograph-AT“ ermöglicht weitere Anwendungen in der Backpraxis und Produktentwicklung. Die Programmierung komplexer Drehzahlprofile oder die Definition von Ruhezeiten für längere Teigführungen eröffnet auch neue Möglichkeiten zur Optimierung von Weizenvorteigen oder Sauerteigen aller Art – sei es flüssig, pastös oder krümelig-fest.
Analytikvielfalt durch Modultechnik
Für den „Farinographen“ bietet Brabender zurzeit mehrere Knetwerkzeuge an. Neben den Sigmaknetern für die (ICC-) Standardtests mit 300, 50 bzw. 10 g Mehlmenge sind in der Praxis der Planetenmischer (z. B. für Roggenteige oder Sandmassen), der „Resistograph“ (für Intensivknetung mit hohen Scherkräften) und der Härte- und Strukturprüfer (zur Getreideanalytik) weit verbreitet. Der Wechsel eines Mixing-Tools dauert nur etwa fünf Minuten. Die Peripherie-Geräte sind aus der Anwendungssoftware anwählbar, bei der jüngsten AT-Generation erkennt die Software des „Farinographen“ am eingebauten Chip gleich automatisch, womit geknetet werden soll – und lädt
die entsprechenden Standards oder die selbst erstellten Methodenvorgaben.
Translation - English The programmable heating profiles of the new Farinograph software open up new temperature-related perspectives for special applications. For example, with the special method developed by Brabender for this fourth generation of the Farinograph, it is possible to heat doughs from 30 °C up to 99 °C after a preset kneading time. Where required, samples can even be heated from -5 °C to 150 °C, which is of practical interest with regards to technology involving partially baked products where there is an interruption in the fermentation period during refrigeration.
The speed for the kneading of the dough is now continuously variable from 0-200 rotations of the kneading blades per minute. This expands the scope of applications for a variety of baked goods, and at the same time, the maximum torque has now been increased to 20 newton-meters.
An essential feature of the “Advanced Technology” is the measurement of energy input during the kneading of a flour sample. Additionally, the relationship between dough development time and dough softening is documented over time as a curve with the Farinograph-Quality Score (FQZ), which is recorded by default. This shows where there is potential for optimizations in production processes in baking facilities.
Kneading with the AT: Four features of the new software
The upgraded user software of the AT generation of Farinographs offers fundamental improvements. With the following four quantum leaps in kneading, it brings users closer to the goal of each flour analysis test – namely, a practical representation of rheological dough processes:
– Kneading on “plateaus”: mirroring production in the lab
The production profiles of the attachable kneading systems can be programmed down to the last detail. Both the speed as well as the kneading time can be set to platform-like “plateaus” of the monitor curves such that they realistically imitate a corresponding kneading machine or a production mixer. In this manner, the behavior of dough or masses in the lab can mimic that in production. In the quality assurance of a large baking facility, for example, dough kneaders from different production lines can even be mimicked by their own Farinograph in the lab as a “measurement kneader”, allowing the production to be optimized.
– Kneading for “the knead”: energy input as a control variable
The measurement of the energy input at a preset mechanical load opens new, economically interesting perspectives: The addition of water and dough yields can be optimized according to the raw materials and the individual machines. As a quality assurance measure, the baking experts can operate their production lines such that the dough networks are optimized, preventing batch errors due to under- or over-kneading. With ingredients such as emulsifiers, fats or gluten, there is considerable savings potential in finding the ideal dose, e.g. in the production of croissants or toast. This is not only useful for quality assurance, it also increases the handling stability of baking mixtures, especially where temperature-dependent emulsifying agent efficiency is concerned.
– “Planetary” kneading: process complex products easily
In combination with the Planetary Mixer P 600 as a kneading tool, even more advanced applications with “difficult” and complex products in the field of fine baked goods are possible, e.g. for biscuit mixes, egg foam or even dosing whipped cream stabilizer. This device combination is the first system worldwide that allows online consistency measurements for masses for fine baked goods. Driven by the Farinograph-AT, a corresponding test procedure which was previously programmed by the user into the Brabender software program for the product, is started. The temperature control in the mixing vat guarantees that the temperatures of the masses produced are realistic and reproducible. For example, through the online measurements in a lab test, the exact point in time where the different added enzymes take effect is shown. This allows conclusions to be made as to the optimal use of these additives during the production process.
– Kneading “with breaks”: optimization of longer processes
An additional software module for the Farinograph-AT enables further applications in baking and product development. The programming of complex rotational speed profiles or the defining of rest periods for longer dough processes also makes available new possibilities for the optimization of all types of wheat pre-doughs or sourdoughs – be they fluids, pastes or crumbly solids.
Diverse analysis possibilities with modular technology
Currently, Brabender offers several kneading tools for the Farinograph. Other than the Sigma kneaders for the (ICC-) standard tests with 300 g, 500 g or 10 g of flour, the Planetary Mixer (e.g. for rye doughs or sand mixtures), the Resistograph (for intensive kneading with high shear forces) and the hardness and structure tester (for grain analysis) are also in widespread practical use. Changing to another mixing tool requires a mere five minutes on average. The peripheral devices can be chosen from within the user software, and with the latest AT generation the Farinograph software automatically recognizes the kneading device through the embedded chip – and loads the corresponding standards or custom procedures.

Source text - German Wie schon im Jahr 2011 wird sich auch im Jahr 2012 das globale Wirtschaftswachstum verlangsamen und laut Internationalem Währungsfond (IWF) nur rund 3% betragen. Der Grund dafür ist die starke Verschuldung einiger Staaten. Diese Staaten sind sowohl im Euro-Raum zu finden wie zum Beispiel Deutschland (2.082 Mrd. EUR), Italien (1.936 Mrd. EUR), Spanien (730 Mrd. EUR) und Griechenland (368 Mrd. EUR) als auch außerhalb des Euro-Raumes wie die USA (15.579 Mrd. USD) und Japan (1.056 Bio. Yen, 12.680 Mrd. Fr.). Eine Lösung für die Verschuldungsprobleme der einzelnen Länder ist bislang noch nicht gefunden worden, was sich aufgrund der internationalen Verflechtung der Finanzsektoren negativ auf die Finanzstabilität auswirkt.
Diese Situation stellt auch für die Schweiz eine große Herausforderung dar. Als Land mit einer stark international ausgerichteten Volkswirtschaft kommt dort der Schaffung guter Rahmenbedingungen für den Finanzsektor eine besondere Bedeutung zu. Die Schweiz erzeugt diese Rahmenbedingung durch die Revision des Bankengesetzes. Diese Reform setzt sich aus vier Hauptpfeilern zusammen:
1. Stärkung der Eigenmittelbasis: Die Bank kann Verluste mit eigenen Mitteln decken und senkt somit das Risiko einer Insolvenz.
2. Strengere Liquiditätsanforderungen: Die Banken sind verpflichtet, auf ihrer Aktivseite ein großes Polster an leicht liquidierbaren Anlagen zur Verfügung zu haben, damit in Krisenzeiten über genügend Liquidität verfügt wird und die Bank ihren Verpflichtungen weiter nachkommen kann.
3. Verbesserung der Risikodiversifikation: Aufgrund der starken Verflechtung vieler Banken kam es während der Krise zu einem Dominoeffekt. Die Risikodiversifikation führt zu einer Reduktion dieser Verflechtungen, die nur noch ein Fünftel betragen darf.
4. Organisatorische Maßnahmen: Diese Maßnahmen sollen darauf abzielen, dass im Fall einer Insolvenz die systemrelevanten Funktionen, wie Einlagen- und Kreditgeschäft oder der Zahlungsverkehr weiterlaufen. Damit soll das Vertrauen der Einleger gestärkt werden.
Diese Stärkung der Stabilität des Finanzsektors tritt am 01. März 2012 in Kraft und die Schweiz gehört damit zu den Vorreitern bei der Bewältigung der Too-big-to-fail-Problematik. Auf diese Weise verhindert der Bundesrat, dass Banken „zu groß sind, um zu fallen“ (too-big-to-fail) und deshalb vom Staat gerettet werden müssen, um eine Schädigung der Volkswirtschaft abzuwenden.
Die Änderung des Börsengesetzes im August 2011 und die damit verbundenen härteren strafrechtlichen Sanktionierungen zum Beispiel bei Insiderhandel, Kursmanipulation und Verletzung der Angebotspflicht unterstützen ebenfalls die Integrität und Wettbewerbsfähigkeit des schweizerischen Finanzplatzes.
Ein weiteres Engagement der Schweiz stellt die Bekämpfung von Geldwäscherei (GWG) und Terrorismusfinanzierung dar. In diesem Zusammenhang beteiligt sich die Schweiz aktiv an internationalen Fachdiskussionen, hatte 2011 namentlich Anteil an der Initiative des „Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate“ (CTED) des UNO-Sicherheitsrates, und trägt in erheblichem Maße zur Finanzierung des Treuhandfonds des IWF auf dem Gebiet der Bekämpfung der Geldwäscherei bei.
Translation - English As was the case in 2011, global economic growth will slow down in 2012; reaching only 3% according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This is due to the increased level of debt of certain countries. Some of these countries are located in the Eurozone, e.g. Germany (2,082 billion euro), Italy (1,936 billion euro), Spain (730 bilion euro), Greece (368 billion euro), while others are outside the Eurozone, e.g. the USA (15,579 billion USD) and Japan (1,056 trillion yen or 12,680 billion Swiss francs). As yet, a solution for the debt problems of these individual countries has not yet been found. This has negatively affected financial stability due to the international integration of the finance sector.
This situation also poses a great challenge for Switzerland. As a country with an economy that is, to a great extent, internationally orientated, it is of particular importance to create a good basic framework for the finance sector. Switzerland aims to achieve this via a reform of banking law. This reform comprises the following four main pillars:
1. Strengthening the capital base: Banks will be able to cover losses with their own capital, thereby reducing the risk of insolvency.
2. Stricter liquidity requirements: Banks are obliged to maintain a large buffer of assets that can be liquidated easily. This is to ensure that they will have sufficient liquidity in times of crisis and continue to able to fulfil their duties and obligations.
3. Improvements to risk diversification: Due to the high degree of integration amongst a large number of banks, a domino effect was observed. Risk diversification contributes to a reduction of these interdependencies, which now may not exceed one-fifth.
4. Organisational measures: These measures are intended to keep crucial system functions running in the event of an insolvency, such as investment, credit, and payment transactions. This aims to increase the faith of account holders in the system.
These boosts to the stability of the finance sector came into effect on 1st March 2012 in Switzerland, making it one of the pioneers in the management of the "too big to fall" problem. In this manner, the Swiss Federal Council intends to prevent instances whereby banks are "too big to fall", making it necessary for the state to rescue them. Likewise, this also averts economic disasters.
The August 2011 reforms to the Stock Exchange Act include harsh legal consequences for insider trading, market price manipulation and the violation of the obligation to make an offer (Angebotspflicht), reinforcing the integrity and competitiveness of Switzerland as a financial centre.
Switzerland is also committed to combatting money laundering (AMLA) and the financing of terrorism. In this regard, Switzerland is an active participant in international talks specific to this purpose. In 2011, it played a part in the initiative by the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) of the United Nations Security Council, and also plays a large role in the financing of the IMF trust fund in the fight against money laundering.

Die Strategiearbeit in den Unternehmen ist ein Arbeitsfeld mit wachsender Bedeutung für das Management. Laut einer Ende 2011 von BARC erstellten Studie zur strategischen Planung leisten sich vier von fünf deutschen Unternehmen eine eigene strategische Planungsabteilung – und die Hälfte dieser Abteilungen sind erst in den letzten fünf Jahren entstanden. Alexander Zimmermann, Geschäftsführer der SOLYP Informatik GmbH, wollte mehr über aktuelle Strategiearbeit in Großkonzernen wissen und hat dazu bei ALTANA, Giesecke & Devrient und EWE TEL nachgefragt.
Strategie (von altgriechisch strategós „Feldherr, Kommandant“) ist ein längerfristig ausgerichtetes Anstreben eines Ziels unter Berücksichtigung der verfügbaren Mittel und Ressourcen. Je komplexer das Feld ist, in dem man agiert, desto schwieriger wird es, eine Strategie bis ins Detail zu durchdenken. Schon der Zusammenhang von strategischer und operativer Planung ist eine Wissenschaft für sich.
Strategie ist eine Führungsaufgabe
Der strategische Planungsprozess ist ein Führungsinstrument, das dem obersten Management eines Unternehmens zur Entscheidungsvorbereitung und zur Entscheidungshilfe dient. Mit Hilfe eines strategischen Planungsprozesses lassen sich Chancen und Risiken unternehmerischen Handelns ausloten, letztlich soll er bei größtmöglichem Weitblick die maximale Wirkungskraft im Hier und Jetzt entfalten. Die konsequente Anwendung eines klar strukturierten Strategieprozesses steigert somit die strategische Kompetenz im Unternehmen.
Im Technologiekonzern Giesecke & Devrient betrachtet man den einheitlich organisierten Strategieprozess als ein Schlüsselelement langfristigen und erfolgreichen Managements. Das sich in Familienbesitz befindliche, international agierende Münchner Unternehmen definiert den Strategieprozess als integralen Bestandteil des Managements. Alle am Strategieprozess beteiligten Geschäftsbereiche und Teams sind so aufeinander abgestimmt, dass sie den gesamten Prozessablauf unterstützen können.
Peter Bross, Group Senior Vice President und Leiter Unternehmensstrategie der Giesecke & Devrient GmbH, betont: „Wir verstehen den Strategieprozess als Führungsprozess und binden diesen konsequent in das Topmanagement ein.“
Beim internationalen Spezialchemiekonzern ALTANA sieht man das ähnlich. Dr. Andreas Jerschensky, Leiter Unternehmensentwicklung / M&A, unterscheidet systematisch zwischen zwei Arbeitsfeldern: der Diagnose und der Strategie: „Die Basis unserer strategischen Arbeit ist eine gründliche Diagnose. In einem jährlichen Zyklus erheben wir mit Hilfe eines dezentralen IT-Strategiesystems strukturiert Daten aus unseren internationalen Einheiten. Die Formate für diese dezentral erfassten Daten geben wir von der Strategieabteilung vor. Beispielsweise interessiert uns, wo wir im Markt gegenüber den Wettbewerbern stehen oder wie sich unsere Kundenbeziehungen entwickelt haben. Auch Technologiebewertungen, Status Quo-, Risiko- und Chancenanalysen sind relevant. Neben harten Kennzahlen spielen dabei gerade weiche Daten eine entscheidende Rolle. Diese Daten werden dann analysiert und und zu Informationen verdichtet. Sie bilden die Grundlage für unsere strategische Arbeit.“
Anpassung an dynamische Märkte
Starke Konkurrenz, schwankende Nachfrage, hoher Innovationsdruck ... Unternehmen stehen heute vor großen Herausforderungen. Ganz oben auf der Agenda: die Erschließung von Märkten und die Entwicklung neuer Produkte. Die Entwicklungen in Asien und China oder technologische Innovationen führen zu unzähligen neuen Produkten und Dienstleistungen mit immer wieder neuen oder veränderten Akteuren. Dabei macht es kaum einen Unterschied, ob man international oder national im Geschäft ist – in jedem Fall hat die Komplexität der zu bewältigenden Daten erheblich zugenommen, was auch die Strategieabteilungen unter Druck setzt.
Der Telekommunikationsanbieter EWE TEL GmbH, eine Tochtergesellschaft des EWE Konzerns, ist hierfür ein Paradebeispiel: Das Unternehmen ist überwiegend am deutschen Markt in verschiedenen Regionen präsent. Die Oldenburger schaffen Bündelangebote aus mehreren Telekommunikationsbereichen und Energieprodukten. Zudem engagieren sie sich stark im Breitbandausbau in der Region und investieren in das konzerneigene Glasfasernetz, um so auch in stark ländlich geprägten Gebieten schnelles Internet (VDSL) zu ermöglichen. Die internationalen technologischen Entwicklungen schaffen speziell in dieser Branche große Risiken, aber auch große Chancen.
„Technologie-Pushs rund um den Globus bewirken eine unvorhersehbare Dynamik mit großen Investitionsrisiken. Wertschöpfungen sind ohne Partnerschaften kaum mehr denkbar“, konstatiert Robert Barthelmes, Leiter Unternehmensentwicklung bei EWE TEL. Gerade Internet- und Webservices würden heute in kürzester Zeit und global entwickelt. Ihre schnelle Skalierbarkeit führe dazu, dass sie immer weniger an Strukturen und Organisationen gebunden seien.
Bei EWE TEL konzentriere man sich deshalb auf die Bildung strategischer Allianzen in den jeweiligen strategischen Geschäftsfeldern der Telekommunikation, was eine neue Sichtweise erfordere: „Die Ausgestaltung von Business Cases auf Basis einer harten Datenwelt genügt bei weitem nicht mehr. Heute ist eine integrierte Perspektive erforderlich, die gerade auch weiche Daten in den Blick nimmt.“
Dass weiche Daten für die Strategiearbeit immer wichtiger werden, stellt auch Peter Bross fest: „Strategien lassen sich nicht nur durch „harte“ Zahlen definieren, sondern eher durch „weiche“ Daten wie z.B. Trendbeschreibungen, Strategy Maps oder Portfoliocharts.“
Neue Verantwortung durch integrierte Strategiearbeit
Strategieexperten begegnen den starken Veränderungen am Markt mit einer zunehmend integrierten Sichtweise. IT-gestützte Führungssysteme wirken sich somit indirekt auch auf die Unternehmenskultur aus. Haben Strategen bislang aus großer Distanz heraus die Situation bewertet und daraus Entscheidungen abgeleitet, so sind sie heute auf einen reibungslosen Informationsfluss im Unternehmen angewiesen. Das erfordert einerseits standardisierte Prozesse, damit die Informationen einheitlich und vergleichbar vorliegen. Andererseits bietet es die Chance, die
Perspektiven der Abteilungen vor Ort verstärkt in die strategische Arbeit einzubinden.
Die Organisation eines Unternehmens steht somit gerade aus strategischer Sicht in hohem Maße auf dem Prüfstand: Welche Teams werden gebildet, damit möglichst repräsentative und auch gültige Informationen gewonnen werden? Welchen Einfluss haben Mitarbeiter auf die Entwicklung des Unternehmens? Wie werden sie in Veränderungsprozesse eingebunden?
Bei Giesecke & Devrient hat man die Verantwortlichkeiten der Strategiemanager neu definiert, was zu innovativen Formen des Wissensmanagements führt. Peter Bross skizziert diese Teamarbeit so: „Unser Strategieteam implementiert und unterstützt den globalen Strategieprozess und tauscht dabei Best-Practice-Erfahrungen untereinander aus. Die Teammitglieder sind Botschafter des Strategieprozesses im Konzern. Zudem liefern sie Feedback an die Geschäftseinheiten bezüglich Planungsannahmen, Methoden und Schlussfolgerungen der strategischen Arbeit. Zugleich sorgen sie für die plausible Verknüpfung zwischen der strategischen und der operativen Planung des Konzerns.“

Translation - English New ways to view strategies: How leading companies optimize their strategic work
In companies, strategic work is a field of growing importance for the management. According to a study on strategic planning carried out by BARC at the end of 2011, four out of five German companies allocate funds for their own strategic planning department – and half of these departments were founded only in the past five years. Alexander Zimmermann, CEO of SOLYP Informatik GmbH, wanted to find out more about strategic work in large companies and conducted inquiries at ALTANA, Giesecke & Devrient and EWE TEL.
Strategy (from ancient Greek strategós meaning “general” or “commander”) is a long-term, directed striving towards a goal while taking into account the materials and resources available. The more complex the field in which one carries out one’s operations, the more difficult it becomes to flesh out a detailed strategy. Already the relationship between strategic and operational planning is a science unto itself.
Strategy is a management responsibility
The strategic planning process is an instrument of management that serves to help the most senior management level of a company with preparing for decisions as well as help them with making decisions. With the help of a strategic planning process, the opportunities and risks of corporate undertakings can be explored. After all, the planning process should help to develop the maximum effectiveness in the here and now with the largest possible amount of foresight. In this manner, the consistent use of a clearly structured strategic process increases strategic competence in a company.
At Giesecke & Devrient, a technology company, the homogenously organized strategic process is seen as a key element of long-term and successful management. This company in Munich, which is family-owned and has international ties, defines the strategic process as an integral component of management. All business departments and teams that take part in the strategic process are so calibrated for each other that they are able to support the entire process flow.
Peter Bross, Group Senior Vice President and the head of corporate strategy at Giesecke & Devrient GmbH, stresses: “We understand the strategic process to be a management process, and therefore consistently integrate it into top management.”
This same view is shared at ALTANA, an international company for special chemicals. Dr Andreas Jerschensky, head of corporate development /M&A, systematically differentiates between two work scopes: Diagnosis and strategy – “The basis of our strategic work is a fundamental diagnosis. In a yearly cycle, we collect data from our international units in a systematic manner with the help of a decentralized IT strategy system. The formats for this data, which is collected in a decentralized fashion, is prescribed by the strategy department. For example, we are interested in knowing where we stand in relation to our competitors in the market, or how our customer relations have developed. Technological reviews, status quo, risk and opportunity analyses are also relevant. In addition to hard figures,
this “soft” data also plays a decisive role. This data is then analysed and compressed to make informational materials. They are what form the basis of our strategic work.”
Adapting to dynamic markets
Stiff competition, unstable demand, a high amount of pressure to innovate… companies today face great challenges. High on the agenda is the conquering of markets and the development of new products. Developments in Asia and China or technological innovations lead to countless new products and services with players that are always new or changing. This is where it makes no difference whether your business is international or domestic – in both cases the amount of data that has to be managed has increased a great deal in complexity, which also puts the strategy department under pressure.
The telecommunications provider EWE TEL GmbH, a subsidiary of the EWE company, is a prime example of this: It is represented mainly on the German market in a variety of different regions. This company from Oldenburg creates bundled offers bringing together different telecommunications fields and energy products. At the same time, they are heavily involved in expanding broadband coverage in the region and are investing in a company-owned fibre optics network, allowing them to make possible fast internet access (VDSL) even in areas that are mostly rural. It is especially in this branch that international technological developments lead to great risks, but also to great opportunities.
“Technological pushes around the globe have brought about an unprecedented dynamic with huge investment risks. Increasing profit and value now seems hardly possible without partnerships,” states Robert Barthlemes, head of corporate development at EWE TEL. Internet and web services are exactly the areas where development is conducted in a very short amount of time and on a global scale. Their quick scalability has led to the phenomenon whereby they are bound less and less to structures and organizations.
This is why at EWE TEL, the focus is on the building of strategic alliances in the respective strategic business fields of telecommunications, which requires a new perspective: “It is no longer anywhere near sufficient to manage and organize business cases on the basis of hard data. Today, an integrated perspective is required, which also includes ‘soft’ data.”
Peter Bross confirms that “soft” data is becoming increasingly important for strategic work: “Strategies are not only defined by ‘hard’ numbers, but more so through ‘soft’ data, e.g. descriptions of trends, strategy maps or portfolio charts.”
New responsibilities through integrated strategic work
Strategy experts respond to the great changes in the market from an increasingly integrated perspective. Management systems supplemented with IT therefore have an indirect influence on corporate culture. If strategists have, up till now, evaluated the situation from a great distance and made their decisions based on these evaluations, then they are today dependent on a smooth flow of information in the company. On the one hand, this requires standardized processes, such that the information is available in a uniform and comparable fashion. On the other hand, this gives the opportunity to integrate the perspectives of the departments on location into the strategic work.
Hence, the organization of a company is subject to a great deal of scrutiny, especially from a strategic perspective: Which teams should be formed such that information that is as representative as possible, as well as valid, is gleaned? What kind of an impact do employees have on the development of the company? How are they integrated into processes of change?
At Giesecke & Devrient, the responsibilities of the strategy manager were redefined, leading to innovative forms of knowledge management. Peter Bross outlines this teamwork in this manner: “Our strategy team implements and supports the global strategy process and best-practise experiences are exchanged among team members. The team members are ambassadors of the strategy process in the company. At the same time, they provide feedback to the business units with regard to planning assumptions, methods and conclusions of the strategic work. They are also responsible for plausibly linking the strategic planning of the company with its operational planning.”
The implementation of an IT-supported management system allows for a comprehensive integration of the strategic work into a company. Although this is carried out centrally, there are a large number of built-in feedback processes. This is able to establish a common corporate culture that is also able to deal with processes of change extremely well, even specializing in it. According to Peter Bross, “Process fidelity notwithstanding, it is necessary to view strategic work as a creative process, and make it flexible, innovative and capable of learning. Without the creativity of the parties responsible for the strategy, strategy-building cannot lead to success even with the best supporting tools and the most optimized processes.
Robert Barthelmes of EWE TEL agrees with the assessment that integrated strategy work is gaining in importance. However, he is skeptical about its positive effects on corporate culture: “This alone is not a responsibility of strategic planning. It has to be formulated in the context of the company’s corporate alignment.” Dr. Jerschensky sees things similarly for ALTANA and makes a stark distinction between strategy and values: “A vision is not a strategy. As a strategist, I work at overcoming concrete, fundamental challenges, all the while keeping the development of the company as a whole in perspective. With regard to our corporate culture and values, it is important that these are lived out in our daily actions. Anything else would be esoteric.”

Automatisch sieht der „Farinograph-AT“ mit Blick auf internationale Standardmethoden eine Wassertemperatur von 28 °C (± 2) vor, manuell sind aber ergänzend auch andere Vorgaben innerhalb eines größeren Temperaturfensters programmierbar.
Neue Perspektiven der „Advanced Technology“
Neue Temperatur-Perspektiven für Spezialanwendungen eröffnen die programmierbaren Heizprofile der neuen „Farinograph“-Software. So ist es mit der von Brabender entwickelten

Increased reliability with new dosing technology
The new generation of the Farinograph markedly increases the reliability and reproducibility of measurement results. For this, a central technological component that has been patented by Brabender is the integrated automatic water dosing system. Dosed with water that has been pre-warmed to an exact temperature, the kneading always takes place under the same conditions. Together with the water dosing system, the monitoring of the blade position in the kneading chamber guarantees a high reproducibility and greatly simplifies test procedures.
In this manner, possible errors arising from incorrect operation during the measuring and addition of quantities of water by the use of pipettes or burettes are eliminated. Previously, this often resulted in inaccuracies during product tests. The easily removable tank unit holds two liters of water, which is dosed automatically according to the preset test standard. At the same time, the automatic determination of the volume of water minimizes problems with the accuracy of readings, eliminates parallax errors and guarantees accuracy with a measurement deviation that is below 0.1 %.
Those who work with the E-version of the Farinograph can benefit from the new dosing technology through an upgrade with the additional “Aqua Inject” module, which Brabender is bringing to the market as a self-contained water dosing system.
Temperature measurement and documentation duo
In practice, variable water temperatures due to weather conditions and room temperatures are possible source of errors before beginning with the actual analysis. However, water temperatures are especially important for farinograms when using standards. Here, the parallel recording of temperatures for the water used for dosing and the dough closes a gap in documentation. The temperature profile is a critical planning value as a parameter for the kneading process.
The Farinograph-AT is set to automatically use a water temperature of 28 °C (± 2) in accordance with standard international procedures, but other settings within a large temperature range can also be programmed manually.
New possible applications for the AT
The programmable heating profiles of the new Farinograph software open up new temperature-related perspectives for special applications. For example, with the special method developed by Brabender for this fourth generation of Farinograph, it is possible to heat doughs from 30 °C up to 99 °C after a preset kneading time. Where required, samples can even be heated from -5 °C to 150 °C, which is of practical interest with regards to technology involving partially baked products where there is an interruption in the fermentation period during refrigeration.
