English to German: Architecture and the Senses by Juhani Pallasmaa General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Architecture
Source text - English Ultimately, architecture is the art of petrified silence. When the clutter of construction work ceases, and the shouting of workers dies away, a building becomes a museum of a waiting, patient silence. In Egyptian temples we encounter the silence that surrounded the pharaohs, in the silence of the Gothic cathedral we are reminded of the last dying note of a Gregorian chant, and the echo of Roman footsteps has just faded away from the walls of the Pantheon. Old houses take us back to the slow time and silence of the past. The silence of architecture is a responsive, remembering silence. A powerful architectural experience silences all external noise; it focuses our attention on our very existence, and as with all art, it makes us aware of our fundamental solitude.

Bio
I am working now for seven years as a freelance translator specializing in art, social sciences, media and computer technology. My clients are suppliers of communication and computer technology, film and broadcasting companies, art institutions, archives, magazines and publishing houses.
I studied German philosophy and literature at the Ludwig-Maximilian-University in Munich, from which I received my bachelor's degree. I extended my qualification by studying art and photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and in Duesseldorf, which awarded me a master's degree.
My translation work also may take advantage of that I have practical experiences in most of the fields I am specialized in as a translator. As a temporary freelance collaborator of the National German Broadcasting Services ARD I am experienced in the fields of new media and broadcasting. In relation to architecture I may refer to several architectural offices in Germany I have collaborated with after my studies.
I like to work on my translations systematically. My creative skills help me refining them and breathe life into your texts.
