Source text - Arabic ارجو ان يكون التفكير العربي الواعي قد وصل إلى مرحلة تجاوز فيها اعتبار النقد مجرد عملية تخريج أو تعداد لعيوب و مثالب و نقائص لا تنتهي. أي ان يكون قد حقق مستوى يعتبر على اساسه النقد انه التحليل الدقيق بغية تحديد مواطن الضعف و اسباب العجز و المؤثرات المؤدية الى وجود العيوب و النقائص. و كل نقد يلتزم بهذا المفهوم لا بد أن يكون هادفا في تدرجه، و ايجابياً في حصيلته مهما بدى، لأول وهلة، سلبياً وقاسياً. كما ارجو أن يكون الوجدان العربي الواعي قد تجاوز المرحلة السابقة للهزيمة حيث كان النقد متهماً دوماً، و بصورة مسبقة، بانه تشويش على الاتجاه الثوري التحريري بأنه تشكيك في القدرة العربية و اضعاف لها أمام تحديات اسرائيل و الصهيونية و القوى الاستعمارية الداعمة لها. و حين وضعت القدرة العربية، التي كان محرماً "التشكيك" بها، على المحك جاءت الهزيمة على صورة ما كان يمكن ان يتصورها أو يتمنى أفضل منها حتى العدو نفسه. و أفضل شاهد على ما أقول ما رواه محمد حسنين هيكل في مقالة من مقالاته (الانوان) عن كيفية تقبل الزعماء السوفيات للهزيمة العربية الاخيرة. قال هيكل
Translation - English I hope that enlightened Arabic thinking will have surpassed the stage in which criticism is considered merely the activity of disparagement or the unending enumeration of sins, faults, and shortcomings. In other words, that it will have achieved a level capable of considering criticism the precise analysis that identifies weak spots, sources of helplessness, and influences that have lead to the existence of faults and shortcomings. Every criticism undertaken with this understanding, committed towards progress and vigorous in its pursuit, must appear at first as negative and harsh. I also hope that the enlightened Arabic consciousness will have surpassed the stage preceding the defeat when criticism was always under suspicion, regarded in advance as an obstacle to advancing in a revolutionary direction, and as spreading doubt in and enfeebling Arab military prowess in the face of the challenges of Israel, Zionism, and its colonial backers. For when the Arabic military about which doubt was forbidden was put to the test, it suffered defeat in a measure that was far beyond the imaginations and hopes of its enemies. The best witness to this is what Mohamed Hassanein Heikal stated in one of his articles (Al-Anwar) concerning how the Soviet leaders reacted to the recent Arabic defeat. Heikal says:

In dieser Frage haben wir Ihnen in den Jahren 1915 und 1916—hauptsächlich in Sommer und Herbst 1915—vielfach und eingehend zu berichten gehabt.
Wie Sie sich erinnern werden, hatten wir Kämpfe zu bestehen, um unsere armenischen Angestellten ihrem Dient an unseren Bahnen zu erhalten. Die kritischste Periode war in August 1915, als die Türkische Regierung unvermittelt eines Tages an die Ausführung ihrer Absicht ging, unsere armenischen Angestellten in der Zahl von etwa 850 zwangsweise mit ihrer Familien in die entfernteren Gegenden des Reiches abzuführen. Sie erinnern sich, das der Zeichner Dieses damals zunächst einen Aufschub der Massregeln erwirkte dadurch, dass er erklärte, zur selbigen Stunde den Betrieb auf der ganzen Linie einzustellen, weil ein solcher in geregelter Weise nach der Herausnahme von 850 geschulten and eingearbeiteten Beamten eine Unmöglichkeit sei. An unserer ohnehin geschwächten Organisation zu rühren, bilde überhaupt eine Gefahr von ungeheurer Tragweite, die sogar den Gang des Krieges beeinflussen könne.
Es war dann eine sehr schwierige Aufgabe, den Aufschub in eine Aufhebung der Massregeln gegen unsere armenischen Angestellten umzuwandeln, und, wie Sie wissen, haben wir diese Aufgabe trotz vielfacher and immer wieder aufs neue einsetzender starker Pression siegreich durchgeführt.
Die Apotheose zu diesem Vorgange tritt nun in Erscheinung. In diesen Tagen war eine Deputation unserer armenischen Angestellten bei uns, um zu erklären, dass sie erst jetzt die Freiheit besässen, das auszusprechen, was sie seit 1915 in steigender Lebhaftigkeit empfunden hätten, nämlich dass sie und ihre Familien Leben und Existenz nur unserem damaligen kühnen und festen Eingreifen zu danken hätten. Dass sie seien, und was sie seien, dankten sie einzig der Leitung der Anatolischen Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft, und es gäbe in den armenischen Familien an unseren Linien kein Familienmitglied, dass dieser Tatsache nicht jeden Tag, den Gott gibt, dankbar gedächte. In diesem Sinne sprach sich die Deputation aus, und unsere Erwiderung bewegte sich in der Richtung, dass wir an unseren armenischen Angestellten stets gewissenhafte Mitarbeiter besessen hätten und dass es sich um ein einfaches Gebot der Pflicht für uns gehandelt hätte, Treue mit Treue zu entgelten.

Concerning the Armenian Issue
We have often had occasion to report to you in detail on this issue during the years 1915 and 1916, mainly in the summer and fall of 1915.
As you will remember, we faced many battles in order to keep our Armenian employees working on our railroad service. The most critical period was in August 1915, when the Turkish government one day abruptly decided to act on its intention to lead away by force our 850 Armenian employees along with their families to the further regions of the country. You will remember, that the underwriter Dieses at that time managed to secure a delay by declaring that he would stop at that exact hour operations along the whole line since it would be impossible to operate in an orderly fashion after the removal of 850 trained and experienced officials. To disturb our already weakened organization might form a danger of great magnitude, one that could even influence the course of the war.
It was a very difficult task to transform the delay into a cancellation of the regulations against our Armenian employees, and, as you know, we accomplished this task despite the many pressures that were always renewing themselves in stronger forms.
The culmination of this process is now emerging. In the last few days, a delegation of our Armenian employees was here in order to declare that they only now possess the freedom to express what they have felt with increasing vividness since 1915, that they and their families have to thank for their life and existence our bold and determined engagement at that time. That they exist, and what they are, is thanks solely to the leadership of the Anatolian Railroad Company, and there are no members of the Armenian families working for us who do not gratefully remind themselves of this fact every day God gives them. This is what they said, and our reply was, in essence, that our Armenian employees were always conscientious and that it was for us only about the command of duty to pay loyalty back with loyalty.

I recently left my job as an editor at Harvard Business Press and am looking to work as an Arabic to English commercial translator.
