Hi!:) I would suggest that the second kanji (第) refers to the figure 1887 itself [because of the kanji 号 after it, so the whole combination, in my opinion, means the 1887th number] and the first one (基) could be a suffix for counting heavy machines or motors. If you wish you could send me the context this kanji combination is found in:)
