I'd appreciate some suggestions on how to handle 'tabuisiert' here.
From an essay by Heinrich Olschowsky: Das Jahr 1956 in der literarischen Szene der DDR

what the hell, another suggestion can't hurt...

brand as taboo
there's a semi-official ring to this, so I like "brand"

On further reflection, I have jumped the gun here as far as the context is concerned. Fear of persecution intimidated contemporary witnesses so in their own minds they may have \"branded\" many subjects as taboo but I now tend towards a more introverted rendering such as Idwer\'s \"treat as taboo\" or Johanna\'s \"consider somehing a touchy topic\" (or subject).

: i don't know, "branded" and "regarded" both sound too deliberate for my ear here. IMHO, "tabuisieren" is... you just don't go there.

In case you feel the need for a change of idioms. May not be right for this context, but it's one for the "this just occurred to me" category.

might work well here.

"have long feared to mention"
I think I'd combine the two ideas. Just another suggestion.
