German term
Hauptgeschäftsführung
German to English

Management
eingetragener Verein
This is from the Articles of Association of a German registered association (e.V., eingetragener Verein). The target language is British English. I need to distinguish between Hauptgeschäftsführung and Vorstand. Your suggestions will be appreciated.
Vorstand could be executive committee, I suppose. For Hauptgeschäftsführung I am considering board of directors, administration board http://www.epda.eu.com/aboutUs/organisation/memorandum_Artic...

(executive) management
The (executive) management (collective noun - "Der Hauptgeschäftsführer und seine Stellvertreter") is appointed by the board of directors.
It has to be 'explanatory' in this way, as we don't really do e.V.s here.
Generally in business, the board would BE the management, and least consist of several 'executive managers' such as CEO, CFO etc.

I think you are leaning in the right direction with committee. UK professional associations are generally run by a board with various (steering committees) handling specific areas. Googling indicates this.

Note from asker:
I'm leaning towards Executive Committee for Hauptgeschäftsführung and Board of Directors for Vorstand, but that's based on a US teacher's association. |

chief executive or managing director
According to Langenscheidt's dictionary the Vorstand is managing board or board of directors, while hauptgeschäftsführer is chief executive or managing director.....

isn't Vorstand "Board" or "Board of Directors"?

perhaps as simple as "Director / Board of Directors", since it's only an association we're talking about here??

then perhaps "managing board of directors" / "designated director"??

musings
This isn't my field and it's late, so just a few comments:
- Do you have a description of the duties and authorities of the Vorstand? This might help differentiate its role from that of the Hauptgeschäftsführung. I don't know what the legal requirements are for the governing bodies of an e.V.; perhaps the Vorstand could be a board of directors (although that's not what it is with an AG).
- I suspect that 'Haupt' here may refer to the Hauptsitz or Hauptabteilung, which in US terms would make it a corporate management board or corporate executive board in the context of a commercial organisation, or the "central management board" of an association with branch organisations having their own management bodies (but "central management board" seems to appear mainly on translated sites).

Globalisation is turning the job title world into thick pea soup, at least at the top end. I suspect that the trend toward giving anyone above the level of a department head the title 'director of xxx' arises from French nomenclature (as does Director General). When I started working in Canada, only members of the Board of Directors were called directors, and when I left Canada people who would have formerly been called 'Head of xxx' or 'xxxx Manager' were called directors. For a modern definition, see:
director: someone who controls resources and expenditures

I recently discovered that in SEC filings, German firms routinely translate 'Mitglied des Vorstands' as 'Managing Director' and 'Mitglied des Aufsichtsrats' as 'Supervisory Director', which effectively erodes the original meaning of 'managing director' (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Managing_director).

Note from asker:
Good point about the Haupt. There's a Bundesverband and several Landesverbände. |
Now I'm wondering if Bundesverband should be national association rather than federal association. It's an association of pharmacologists. |
