Glossary entry (derived from question below)
German term or phrase:
weniger Personal ist nicht drin
English translation:
a reduction in staff is not an option
German term
weniger Personal ist nicht drin
I wonder if something like might fit or have I got it wrong?

Proposed translations
is not an option
is how I put it. "in the cards" would imply that it is being considered, but it's not possible right now. "Ist nicht drin" means more, "absolutely not!" - at least in Duesseldorf it did....

Yes, Richard, you seem to be right...everyone around the world seems to be using "on the cards" whereas the US English is once again the exception (sigh...) no wonder everyone's so confused!
Thanks. Yes, it does have that implication. |
not doable / can (not) be done
a few more suggestions:
cannot do it/is not doable/is not possible/out of reach
as in:
fewer people is simply not possible
cannot have a smaller workforce - we've considered it, but right now, it's just not possible/not doable
it's not possible (now or maybe never) to achieve it with a smaller workforce
can't be done/achieved with fewer people/personnel

ein Sieg ist wohl nicht drin
a victory is probably not doable

für "nicht drin" auch: out of the question

PS: my suggestions are not necessarily for points, I just felt I post a few more suggestions.
