This phrase comes from an 1821 Last Will and Testament, filed in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. The entire passage reads:
"Weiter geb und vermach ich an mein gelibtes Ehe weib Catarina vollen Besitz von all meinem Ligenten Vermegen Mit allem gebeu vor ihren Natierlichen Lebensunterhalt so Lang sie Lebt oder meinen Namen fürt, so daß sie ein voll recht hatt zu sich ins Haus zu nem wen sie wil for daß Land zu bebauen, doch alemahl mit dem ausbehalt daß meine Executors ein recht haben zu verhindern daß keinerley vorsetzlichen schahten getahn werden darf an Land geben oder Hols durch gesagte Zeit."
The handwriting isn't really the problem, but the orthography is! I read the passage as: "Further, I give and bequeath to my beloved wife, Catarina, the full possession of all my real estate with all the buildings for her support during her natural lifetime, for as long as she lives or bears my name, so that she has the full right to take whomever she wants into the house to cultivate the land, but always with the condition that my executors have the right to prevent any ??????? of land or wood during the said time."
The word "vorsetzlichen" is written very clearly; the word "schahten" is also relatively clear, although makes no sense. The only possible variant reading would be "schaften," but the letter looks identical to all the other h's in the document. ANY SUGGESTIONS? The full text is available on Ancestry.com:
