agree  beermatt: As a contrast to the disagreeing "pickles=gherkins ONLY" people: in my British family, "get the pickles out" would mean gherkins, onions, walnuts PLUS things such as "Branston Pickle", which contains chopped pickled gherkins, but other veg as well.
