One part of these two questions is another item of a long list of about 80 products in the range of a company that deals primarily with conveyors, hopper charging elevators and other materials handling and processing equipment.

"Abkühlbänder (Isothermglüh-/BY-Anlagen)"

The following sentence also appears in another part of the text:

"Stahl-Scharnierplattenbänder bilden auch die Förderelemente in Wärmebehandelungsanlagen z.B. bei der BY-Umwandlung (der gezielten Abkühlung aus der Schmiedehitze"

I understand and can translate most of this except for the abbreviation "BY" and the word "Isothermglühanlagen".

Ernst – Wörterbuch der industriellen Technik shows "Isothermschmieden" as "isothermal hot-die forging" which also sounds great but does not help me much.

(My spellchecker always wants to put an "e" between "Isotherm" and "glüh" or "schmieden" but you can't trust those Microsofties.)

"isothermal radiation units" and "BY-transformation units" have a nice ring to them but are probably dead wrong.

Any ideas????

BY transformation

"isotherm" is a line on a chart having the same mean temperature for a given period or at given points.
In television you have a BY-axis, which could refer to colour "temperatures" on screen, and a BY-signal.
So they may be talking about a transformation of the BY axis, which could be a parameter in an annealing oven, which is measured by the colour.
Your "Isothermglühanlagen" definitely can be translated as isothermic annealing ovens (or installations), that is annealing ovens that keep the same temperature, unless the BY axis of the isotherm is transformed (?).
By the way, this is "doing the detective thing".

Using the suggestion from "words" about the BY-axis in TV, I queried "blue-yellow axis" and got lots of English hits about TV, computer graphics programs like PhotoShop and photography, etc, but nothing about metallurgy. The opposite is the red-green axis. It would make sense though for metallurgy too though because a blue-red piece of glowing metal would clearly be a different temperature than a yellow-red piece. They probably use some sort of spectrographic measurement to precisely control the temperature during the annealing process. Although I still do not understand the technical side of it, it appears that the "BY" in the German text is from the English "Blue-Yellow" anyway so I learned from "words" answer that I did not have to translate "BY" in my English text. This answer won't be much help I'm afraid, as I've forgotten to bring the heat treatment glossary home with me. I found a good definition of Isothermglühen that I will copy down for you next week. The only B term I could find was bainite and there is a bainitic transformation, but I'm not sure that applies to the metal you're dealing with. For Y all I found was Young's modulus, which has to do with elasticity, but wasn't combined with B so probably isn't related. I will try to ask one of the heat treat engineers I work with if you can hang on a few days.

definition of Isothermglühen

Here is the definition I promised:
"Isothermglühen, Perlitisieren(isothermal annealing): Lösungsglühen mit anschliessendem Abkühlen auf eine niedrigere Temperatur und Halten auf derselben um eine isothermische Entmischung, der unterkühlten Hochtemperaturphase zu erzielen. Für Eisenwerkstoffe beinhaltet sie den vollständigen Zerfall des unterkühlten Austenits in Ferrit und Perlit, Perlit oder Zementit und Perlit und wird dann als Perlitisieren bezeichnet."

There are lots of different kinds of transformation in this glossary, but I still can't track down BY.
Otherwise, this is a pretty good glossary, if you do a lot of heat treat work, you might find it useful:
