German term
mit ihren Händen begreifen
German to English
Social Sciences
Education / Pedagogy
I know what this means, but I'm not sure what would work best in English. Any thoughts/ideas would be much appreciated! (British English preferred.)
Here's the context (in an article about a community supported agriculture scheme where the farm is also open to school classes and adult groups for educational purposes):
In der Bildungsarbeit ist mir wichtig, dass die Menschen entschleunigt unterwegs sind, die Natur selber mit Staunen entdecken und mit ihren Händen begreifen.
Sie erfahren so ganz praktisch den Zusammenhang von Anbau und Ernte und Besonderheiten, wie den Einsatz von natürlicher Schädlingsbekämpfung und Bodendüngung.

really get a feel for it
"literally get a feel for it"
https://www.google.com/search?q="literally get a feel for it...
Here's a really British idiom: 'learn by getting stuck in'
However, the verb in the source text is 'begreifen' rather than 'lernen'.
Can you somehow work 'tactile' into it?

Comment: "Good answer! Thanks! It conveys the double entendre of "begreifen", which I think is important."

learn using their hands/learn by doing
.. or could you even do something involving “hands-on learning/experience”?

hands-on learning
In a Montessori classroom you will see hands-on learning EVERYWHERE! If a child is able to use their hands to discover, their discoveries become more meaningful to them. The concepts they learn are much more rooted than any rote memorization could be, because in using their hands, they experience their learning. They are an active participant.

giving people a tactile sense of nature
Compare with this:
"Your sense of touch can also contribute to the natural world brought inside. Why not place pebbles, shells, seed pods or pieces of tree bark as ornaments around your home? Doing this will foster a tactile sense of nature as you pick them up, and perhaps trigger the happy memory of when they were collected." https://homes.nine.com.au/design/connect-with-nature-city-ap...

grasp nature with their own hands, as it were
also takes care of the double entendre "be'greifen"
Note from asker:
I like this answer, because it conveys the double entendre well. It was really only a toss-up between this and "really get a feel for it". |
