The term appears out of context and is used to describe a type of labour /employment relationship. Could it be hired (i.e. temporary) employees vs the full-time?

Google is unreliable in this case. Renki refers to anyone employed on a casual basis, not just farm labourers. The connotation of the word is readiness to do work whatever the context.

Just for reference that I was unable to google any other meanings to the term than a 'hired farmhand', which in my context is incorrect.
