Is this sentence OK?

Some Native speaker of English said that this should be "are far afield".
But "far field " must be used.

Explanation:
As Harry says, the better way to express it would be "...to ensure far-field conditions" — in this instance, as "far-field" is being used as an adjective, the hyphenated version is better IMHO (and especially, for UK English)

Any ENS who says otherwise is probably not familiar with this very specific technical use, since in everyday language it would indeed sound quite wrong!

If you regard a radiating source as a point source (isotropic), then the radiated waves are spherical (near field); but as you get farther and farther from the point source, the wavefronts tend to become parallel, and at a given distance, can be regarded as plane waves — this is the far-field condition. Clearly, this will be a function of wavelength (and hence, frequency) — but the same principle applies right the way from acoustic wavelengths (your hifi speakers) right up to microwaves etc. And just look at ripples on a pond!

Actually, the worse thing wrong with that sentence, which makes it sound like non-native EN, is the "...are in the distance..." — this isn't very natural, and something like "...are sufficiently far away"..." or "...are placed at a sufficient distance..."would be more idiomatic.

Explanation:
If the test involves transmitting a signal or radio waves between the antenna and the EUT, this should be worded as 'It is desirable that the distance between the antenna and the EUT is sufficient to ensure far-field conditions', or less formally 'The antenna and the EUT should be far enough apart to ensure far-field conditions'.
