高炉は、外部を鋼板製の鉄皮で覆い、内部を耐火物で内張りした竪型円筒状の構造物である。鉄皮と耐火物の間には、ステーブと呼ばれる水冷金物を埋設して冷却する。炉体は、上部から下方にかけて下広がりになったシャフト部、直胴状のベリー部、さらにその下に、上広がりのボッシュ部、そして最下部の炉床部から成る。シャフト部とベリー・ボッシュ部はシャモットれんがや炭化珪素質れんがで、炉床部はカーボンれんがで内張りするのが普通である。炉床の側壁部には、熱風炉、熱風管、熱風環状管を経由してきた熱風を炉内に吹き込む水冷銅製の羽口が高炉の大きさによって、20から40本、放射状に取り付けてある。溶銑や溶滓を取り出す出銑口や出滓口もここに設けてある。現在最大級の高炉は、全高約80メートル、炉体の高さ約35メートル、最大内径約16メートル、内容積約5,200立方メートルであり、一日に溶銑約1万トンを製造できる。 - 高炉の設備
