Man muss verstehen Explanation: "Es versteht sich" may be an acceptable translation for "It should be understood" in some (not too frequent) instances, but with "Man muss verstehen" you are on the safe side, for the situation where something is evident (es versteht sich), or the situation where it's important that something is well and truly understood.
