Dutch term

dispositie

Dutch to English Other Transport / Transportation / Shipping inland waterway shipping annual report
Dispositie must be a department in this shipping company as in the annual report they state the following "Op de dispositie zijn in het verslagjaar geen wisselingen van personen geweest.". I saw an earlier question (without explanation) with the result "forward planning". Could "dispositie" be the "forward planning" department in a shipping company?

Dispatch (Department) http://job-descriptions.careerplanner.com/Dispatchers-Except...

virtually matches PG's reference
philgoddard Oct 19, 2016:
It means logistics. Nothing to do with disposal. Planning works too, though forward planning is a tautology.
Willemina Hagenauw (asker) Oct 19, 2016:
@Michael Sorry, there is not much more context. Dispositie is either used as a stand alone word or in the context I gave in my question, so as a department. They also talk about "Disponenten" which are "duty allocators". So I wonder if it is a planning department. The company ships consignments through inland waterways.

@Willemina: Can we have some of your actual Dutch context?
Michael Beijer Oct 19, 2016:
and "Please note: Vehicle includes motor vehicles, ORVs, and snowmobiles. Vessel includes watercraft.

You must report the disposition of the vehicle or vessel in a timely manner to the law enforcement agency that authorized the vehicle or vessel's removal. If you have an agreement with the law enforcement agency, you must comply with that agreement. You must also report the disposition on Michigan’s Abandoned Vehicle Website. To become an EFT custodian please click on Setting up an Electronic Funds Transfer Account." (http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,1607,7-127-48268-130737--F,00.... )

+ "Since the disposition of the vehicle must be included in junk and salvage yards' reports to NMVTIS, how will we comply when a vehicle's final disposition is unknown at the time of making the report? Are we required to report a second time once the final disposition is determined?
Junk and salvage yards are required to report the date the automobile was obtained in inventory during that month even if the final disposition is unknown at the time the report is submitted. Junk and salvage yards must file an update or supplemental report of the final disposition of any automobile where final disposition information was not available at the time of the initial report filing, or if the actual disposition of the automobile differs from what was initially reported."

Michael Beijer Oct 19, 2016:
as far as I can tell, they mean getting rid of… stuff. that is: disposing of it. see e.g.:

"Do I have to report when I purchase a vehicle AND when it is crushed or sold?
Vehicles should be reported within 30 days of receipt, but because some junk or salvage yards may hold vehicles for several months or years before a final disposition (e.g., crushed, sold) is known, some reporting entities may need to provide a second report when the final disposition of a vehicle is known.

The NMVTIS regulations do not preclude a junk or salvage yard from reporting the final disposition of a vehicle at the time of first reporting, if such a disposition is known with certainty. Junk and salvage yards are responsible for ensuring the accuracy and completeness of their reporting and for providing corrected information to the system, should the disposition be changed from what was initially reported.

How do I determine the disposition of a vehicle?
Insurance Carriers

SALVAGE is the only available disposition for insurance carriers or those reporting on their behalf." (http://www.add123.com/jsi/nmvtis_faq )

No idea if the GWIT ref I gave is correct, but thought it might be useful.

I do know that in a military context, "disposition" is a thing. See e.g.:

"SUBJECT: Defense Materiel Disposition: Disposal Guidance and Procedures "(http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/corres/pdf/416021_vol1.pd... ) (although I am not sure what it means)

I must admit it wasn't easy to find references for this, especially as it's often mistranslated as "disposition", which doesn't mean very much in this context.

However, it means ensuring that resources are in the right place at the right time. Michael's reference comment concerns "dispositiesysteem", software used to monitor vehicle fleet movements.

My reference is a job description for a "logistiekbediende", also referred to as a "medewerker dispositie", showing that the two are near synonyms. The jobholder's main responsibilities are these:

"Je plaatst en verwerkt bestellingen, je communiceert met inkoop en met leveranciers & je wijst goederen toe aan winkels."
Note from asker:
Thanks Phil, so in the context of a shipping company this could mean having the right ship at the right place at the required time to pick up and/or deliver a consignment. It makes a lot of sense!

agree philgoddard : Though I don't agree with "dispositioning". It means making sure they're in the right place at the right time.
