I think that the writer has used Aufklaerung/enlightenment on purpose, as well: there seems to be an ironic use of the phrase to refer both to European rationalism and social progressivism and to the concept of Buddhist enlightenment. Perhaps I see more than the writer intended, but it\'d be a shame not to use some form of \"enlightenment\" in the translation for that reason.

: I think that this translation misses the connotations of enlightenment (in particular the Buddhist connotation, given the Asian context)--sophistication has to do more with culture and refinement, whereas enlightenment has to do with awareness/knowledge.

I don't interpret aufgeklärt as meaning sophisticated here - I see it more as simply meaning "trained, educated", and the link (because of the hyphen) is quite specifically with "europäisch" - i.e. "trained" in understanding European ways of doing things. "Claims to be European in outlook" would be another possibility, if it fits with your translation of the second part of the sentence.
