Discussion

Textklick Jul 27, 2004:
A check with hotel-trained Frau Texty says Venison Goulash would be better cuts of meat. "Pfeffer" is usually rougher cuts, with spice and innards like liver. Untranslateable per se. Suggest Kim's "Ragout" with "Spicy venison" in front??? Bon appetit.
Kevin Pfeiffer (X) Jul 27, 2004:
LOL - I didn't see "cooking" and assumed this was some caustic pepper meant to keep deer away (as opposed to tasting good). :-)
Non-ProZ.com Jul 27, 2004:
But the lady said: "Ich mache daraus Rehgulasch ODER Pfeffer."

venison goulash

Peer comment(s):

agree David Hollywood : köstlich, mouthwateringly scrumptious, etc :) > I also found "jugged venison"

agree Kim Metzger : ragout http://www.zeit.de/archiv/1998/39/199839.siebeck.xml

agree Gerrit Jan Groothedde : Could go with "venison ragout". Might also suggest "jugged venison" or "stewed venison". I don't think it's a "terrine" though. Should add that "Gulasch" and "Pfeffer" are two distinct preparations.

thanks , I'm aware of the technical differences, but if it's for a menu, those really don't need to be spelled out
agree Textklick : Gimme gimme ;-)

agree Samira Goth : with Gerrit

agree Sabine Griebler : ragout

agree Nancy Arrowsmith : Ragout preferable to Gulasch, which contains a LOT of onions, and not always that much meat.

a very popular dish from small chunks of deer (or other game) meat, called pepper because this used to be the main seasoning

in this case it is definitely venison ragout for the Rehgulasch; I would still use deer wild game for Rehpfeffer
