2nd) Check out: When you check something out, you find out about it or examine it because you want to make sure that everything is correct or safe.
i.e. Frank was going to check out the restaurant floor to see whether anything unusual was going on. (Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Phrasal verbs)

Me inclino por este significado en nuestro contexto particular.
Por lo que los verbos útiles parecen ser: comprobar, revisar, verificar, inspeccionar dado que no parece tratarse de una “mirada superficial” sino que implica asegurarse de que todo está correcto.
