Here, in this chapel, on August 15, 1534, St Ignatius of Loyola and St Francis Xavier had established the Society of Jesus. The small group of founding members also included Saint Pierre Favre, a distant ancestor of Maritain’s grandfather, Jules Favre. In his biography, Barré underlines the significance of the fact that both events – Saint Pierre Favre’s consecration and Maritain’s baptism – happened almost in the same place. “Quite an analogy” – Barré notices – “in the destiny of Jacques Maritain...”
