Bio

Consider the following scenarios.

The Children and Young People's Service receives a report about a child being exposed to domestic violence. A Social Work Assessment is carried out and the report needs to be shared with the family, but they can't understand what it says.

A school has a student with special educational needs. The student is seen by an occupational therapist or by a speech and language therapist, who writes a report. The parents need to read that report and apply the advice contained therein, but they don't speak English well enough to understand it.

A charity wants to provide information and advice to people in need. They realise that, in order to make their content accessible to as many people as possible, they should get it translated into some of the languages most widely spoken in the country where they operate.

In all of these scenarios, the translator needs to work with the service user in mind. Who is going to be reading the translation? Are there any cultural aspects that come into play? What concepts from the source language text might be hard for the service user to comprehend? It's impossible for anyone to make meaningful changes or take steps to improve their situation if they don't understand the advice being offered to them.

According to the 2021 Census, Romanian was the second most common main language in England for those who did not speak English as a main language.

If you need a Romanian translator with extensive experience in translating charity and public sector documents, get in touch at [email protected] or [email protected].

If you'd like to know a bit about my qualifications, here's a summary:

  • I am an English to Romanian translator with eight years of experience.
  • I am a native Romanian speaker. I live in Bucharest, Romania.
  • I have a BA and an MA in translation.
  • I am certified by the Romanian Ministry of Justice.
  • I am an associate member of APIT (the Romanian Professional Association of Interpreters and Translators).
  • You can also find me on LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/ioana-leda-costea-nicolae/
  • My CV is available upon request.

Last, but not least, a few fun facts about me:

  • Call me Leda. Though I'm Romanian, my name comes from Greek mythology; Leda was the mother of Helen of Troy)
  • When I'm not working, you can find me reading (just one more chapter!), browsing in bookshops (buying books and reading books are two different hobbies), walking my dog (who's a good boy?) or taking part in pub quizzes (I know so many fun facts!).
